Burning Spear on Tour

Roots/reggae sensation Burning Spear (real name Winston Rodney OD) is one the most respected artists in the history of Jamaica. A Rastafarian, Burning Spear is one of the most influential roots artists to come out of the 1970s. Throughout nearly four decades, more than 25 albums and countless live performances, Burning Spear has carried the torch of political activist Marcus Garvey. Through lyrics and rhythms and live performances that spread messages of peace and love to all, Burning Spear promotes self-determination and self-reliance for African descendants. Before Burning Spear embarked on a string of shows in the U.S. in 2022 -- his first tour since 2010 -- he announced that he would not be going out on long tours anymore. In a 2021 interview with Reggaeville, the singer/songwriter/musician said, "I don't think I will be touring again. Like going on the road for months, weeks. ... I will use my discretion and think about doing maybe a little show here and there." Seeing Burning Spear live should be on the bucket list of any reggae fan.

Burning Spear Live in Concert

Winston Rodney OD (aka Burning Spear) was born in 1948 in St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica -- the same birthplace as the legendary Bob Marley, who set the singer/songwriter/musician off on his career in music. He met Marley while they were both living in St. Ann's and, as Burning Spear recalls in a bio on his website, "I say ... I would like to get involved in the music business. And Bob say, 'All right, just check Studio One." So, Rodney set off to Kingston for a meeting with Coxsone Dodd, the head of Studio One. It was there that Burning Spear released a series of singles, including the 1972 Jamaican smash hit "Joe Frazier (He Prayed)." Shortly after, Burning Spear released their first two classic albums: 1973's Studio One Presents Burning Spear and 1974's Rocking Time. After moving on to work with Jack Ruby, Burning Spear recorded "Marcus Garvey," which would become a successful hit song, followed by "Slavery Days." In 1975, Burning Spear released the Marcus Garvey album, one of the greatest albums to ever come out of Jamaica. Burning Spear subsequently released Man in the Hills (1976), Dry & Heavy (1977), Social Living (1978), and Hail H.I.M. (1980). These five albums remain a seminal canon of dread roots, carrying on the legacy of Burning Spear for decades to come.

One of the best reggae shows in recent memory. Burning Spear and his band were excellent. True reggae master! Saw him a number of years ago at the Music Hall in Portsmouth,NH. He still has the rasta mystique.

    Spear in Top Form!

by Andy on 8/6/22Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton Beach

I love the Hampton Beach Casino for shows, and Burning Spear was most excellent this time! The man has a crack band, can still perform as he did 20 years ago, and really does bring the roots reggae experience. I had never seen him live before but own much of his music. Great, great Reggae show. I highly recommend Burning Spear! P.S.: Some idiot rushed the stage and tried to play Spear's bongos. Spear hardly missed a beat. They chucked the guy and got on with the show!

    Awesome Show!!!

by tkofford on 8/4/22Levitt Pavilion Denver - Denver

We used to see Burning Spear when we were in college, and it was always a great show that we never missed. However, fast forward 15+ years and my wife and I saw they were starting a world tour after not playing for 10 years, so we were quick to purchase tickets. We thought it would be a great show as it always was, but man we had no idea what we were in for that night! Winston Rodney at age 77 sounded, played, and danced like a man 1/2 his age, and the rest of the band was simply smoking hot! It's been years since seeing Burning Spear, but I would say this was his best show I've ever seen and frankly one of the best shows I've ever seen, ... words cannot express how great it actually was!!!

    Amazing!!

by Al on 8/2/22Levitt Pavilion Denver - Denver

He is truly a connected soul. I would like to see any other 77 year old man get up on stage and perform at that level of intensity. I was thrilled that I got to see him one more time! It won’t be forgotten

    EPIC SHOW!!

by Xtine on 8/2/22Levitt Pavilion Denver - Denver

I’ve seen every Burning Spear show in Colorado since he first started coming to Reggae On The Rocks in 1996(?) as well as other smaller venues like The Gothic Theater. I’ve never been to the Levitt Pavilion before but have to say the July 30th show was probably the most fun I’ve ever had at a Burning Spear show, not just because Rodney and his Burning Band put on an EPIC performance, but the venue was so massive and fan friendly with plenty of room to dance on a beautiful lawn or just run around and play. I’ll definitely be coming back for Black Uhuru on Oct 1st come rain or shine, I’ll be there dancing and enjoy a fabulous venue!!

    Burning Spear

    by S. T. on 8/2/22Levitt Pavilion Denver - Denver

Burning Spear was amazing. I like going to the Levitt Pavilion, but getting into that venue is crazy! They will search you more than TSA. The lines move very slow and are long. Hope they come up with a better way of getting people in the venue. Other than that no complaints. We will be back but give ourselves plenty of time to stand in line.

    Winston Rodney/Burning Spear - a living legend

by Mikey Dread on 8/2/22Levitt Pavilion Denver - Denver

What can I say… the African postman is a living legend and still brings it to all who appreciate reggae music…. Plenty of horn based deep roots reggae and nothing better than Burning Spear dancing and playing bongos and feeding off the energy of the crowd as he declares “Talk To me people! Talk to me” midsong

    Above the Top

by Swamp Guinee on 8/1/22The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver Spring

I’ve seen Burning Spear ’live’ at least 7-8 times over the past 30+ years and I find myself being mesmerized and caught in trance by his aura, mystique and display of musicianship every time. This man is 77 years old and has not taken his foot off the gas. Last night at The Fillmore Silver Spring was full on church vibes. I mean, WOW!!! I’m speechless. Salute to the grey bearded lion still holding it down.
