Buffalo Bills Team History

The Buffalo Bills became the seventh team to join the American Football League when Ralph C. Wilson was awarded the franchise in 1959. In 1964 and 1965, the Bills won the AFC Championship, and then-Head Coach Lou Saban was named AFL Coach of the Year for both seasons. After Marv Levy took over as Head Coach in 1986, the Bills won five AFC championships and made four consecutive Super Bowl appearances from 1990–1993. To date, the Bills are the only team to play in four consecutive Super Bowl games.

Since hiring Head Coach Sean McDermott in January 2017, the Bills have made five playoff appearances. In 2022, the Bills made playoff history in a game against the Patriots when they became the first team in the Super Bowl era to score a touchdown on each of its first seven drives of a playoff game.

Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium

Since opening in 1973, Highmark Stadium, located in Orchard Park, New York, has been the home to the Buffalo Bills. The stadium underwent several name changes; known as Ralph Wilson Stadium from 1998 to 2015, it was renamed New Era Field in 2016, then Bills Stadium in 2020. Following a new naming rights deal in 2021, its official name is now Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Stadium.

A visit to Highmark Stadium for a Buffalo Bills game is sure to be a loud and high-energy experience, as the team’s fanbase, the Bills Mafia, is arguably the most loyal in the NFL. The group got its start in November 2010 following the upset from a dropped pass by receiver Stevie Johnson that could have resulted in a game-winning touchdown. The hashtag #BillsMafia caught wind on Twitter, and since then the group has been known for their tailgating antics and game-day attire and energy.

Was great other than not enough bathrooms

    by Steve on 8/12/23

We sat in the main grandstands and when my granddaughter needed to go to the bathroom there wasn't anywhere nearby to go. Kept walking along main walkway and not even a porta john in sight. Had to go all the way to the bathrooms in the building. Ended up leaving at the point because too far to walk back to stands. Organizers really dropped the ball this year on this very important issue.

    Great until ending

    by Brandon on 8/12/23

Getting to watch them was awesome however my son got really disappointed when we learned there was no kids tent for signatures and the few players that did sign only did vip. Damar even looked at him. We knew it wasn't a Guarantee but also thought he would at least have a better chance until we found out they got rid of the kids tent. He's 11.

    Mass Confusion

    by BobO on 8/12/23

Got there early to get good seats only to have people stand in front of us at the railing so we could not see the practice. Lined up at the fence for after action autographs for an hour and only one player (DT Phillips, bless him) stopped by. One of 5 grandkids got his Bills hat signed. So, once and done.

    Autograph opportunities

    by normbo on 8/10/23

It would have been nice if more players made themselves available for autographs for the kids, disabled people and those seeking memorabilia to get signed. Rochester has a overwhelming following for everything Buffalo Bills. It would have been nice to have the players, especially the newly signed ones and the ones vying for a spot on the team to make themselves available to the fans.

    Good time with some disappointment

    by CC on 8/10/23

We went to the Bills practice and it was great to see them. We had a great time, even though it was hot, watching the different line ups and drills. However, trying to navigate the event (where to go and see them, where the best place to stand/sit, etc) was difficult as signs were not very clear around the college. In addition, we were standing on the other side of the field compared to the main grandstand and NO players came over at the end to sign anything for the kids, which was disappointing. We certainly didnt expect to have all items signed or get them signed at all but it seemed like unless you were in the VIP tent, you didnt really get any sort of opportunity to see the players after practice.

    Awesome time

    by Joe on 8/9/23

This is something as a Rochesterian I look forward to every single year. The Bills being in town, seeing them up and close and personal is awesome. Once you're there it's great. The only downsides are the shuttle rides - not because of the drivers or anything but the distance away from the event and it's usually hot out and there is no air conditioning. And this is after you have been waiting in uncovered areas waiting for it. Then once you're there, there is no cover from the sun. But seeing the team and having them be in our backyard along with all of the people who we read/listen to being here and accessible is awesome and far outweighs these minor inconveniences! GO BILLS!

    Fun But Dry

by To Bee Honest on 8/9/23

Overall, I really enjoyed the event. For a free ticket there were a lot of awesome freebies, extremely friendly staff and a wonderful atmosphere. However, I will say that the event is heavily promoted as way to meet and engage with players and that was definitely not the case. They never signed autographs, did Q&As, or even really acknowledged the audience. It felt like we weren't really supposed to be there, and you could tell that this disappointed a lot of the audience, myself included. Everyone brought merch to be signed and questions for especially Josh Allen, and it was a little anticlimactic to watch them run around and then go home. Aside from that, fantastic afternoon to spend with your family and I highly recommend the event so long as you come in with no expectations.

    Lousy music!

    by Maria on 8/7/23

Most of event was great, appreciate the free tickets and parking, crowd was good, players tried to interact with crowd. Music was too loud and not appropriate for the median age of the crowd. Would rather have had a announcer for the plays.

    Very clean and organized

by Me me meee on 8/7/23

The event was organized very well from parking lot attendants, security, gate personnel, concessions, everything from top to bottom was excellent. Absolutely zero complaints everything was very smooth. Besides the traffic on the 90, but that was because of a couple of fender benders. Once we were on location everything was greatly handled and the crowds were moving at a perfect pace. This was one of the best experiences I've had at the stadium in recent times. Even my buddy was impressed and he never goes to the stadium, he even said to me "I wanna buy tickets for night game". I couldn't believe he actually said that haha

    More information needed

    by Tina on 8/7/23

I agree with others that there should have been more communication during the practice to inform us what was going on. Also the traffic wasn't handled well either. Hopefully it will be better for the preseason game.

    Ideas for Improvement

    by Mel on 8/7/23

I love the Return of the Red and Blue and it is my family's third year in a row attending. Opening the lots earlier would be nice for families to hang out, have lunch, etc. We love the family-friendly nature of the event, so it is nice for kids to get that authentic tailgate experience without some of the problems that come at games. If the lot opened at 1pm or 2pm, that would give families some time to hang out before getting in line. Also, offering some entertainment for families on the field before the players came out. Have music, honor some local high school or youth league teams, have a flag scrimmage between top flag teams, etc. I know there were things outside of the field, but most people want to get in an get good seats. It was so dull between 4 and 5:30. It is a lost opportunity to engage the fans in my opinion.
