It was a privilege to see Bruce Springsteen and E Street Band, even though I was in the nosebleed section. The show was terrific, full-on energy and great musical talent from the first note to the 3rd encore 3 hours later. Springsteen was brilliant, engaging the audience, reaching out, dancing with kids that some fans boosted up on the stage, running, leaping, playing guitar or harmonica and singing almost nonstop. He and E Street members Van Zandt and Lofgren launched plenty of string-bending solos, with classic sax support from Clemons and unexpected violin and accordion bits from Tyrell, Giordano, and Bittan. He chose a mix of his own popular older stuff (eg. Working on the Highway, Cover Me, Dancing in the Dark, Born to Run, Thunder Road) which caused joyful sing-alongs, his own contemporary stuff (eg. The Rising, Working on a Dream, Outlaw Pete), and some charming selections of other old music picked from the audience requests (eg. Sherry Darlin, So Young and In Love, And Then (S)He Kissed Me). This segment, where he gathered signs from the floor fans with their requests, seemed really connected and creative. He was particularly animated and exuberant. How does he do it? It is inspiring! If you don't believe me, check the amateur vids of the show on YouTube. I had not been to see him live and cannot compare to other concerts he gave. But I have seen plenty of other classic rockers over the past 40 years, so I feel qualified to say that his show was GREAT. Anyone who has chance should go see him. He and the band members looked to be having plenty of fun, and it made it fun to be there. So--he is not the same guy he was decades past, but he is better - looked and sounded truly fine and was full of life. He made me feel alive too, and what could be better? Here's to more Bruce and E Street. Give that man an arena-sized hug. Play anything you want, just keep playing!
