Hornsby and band at top of game

by Woke2Punk on 6/29/23Ocean City Music Pier - Ocean City

Vintage and modern Bruce. He played some of our favorite songs and showed off crazy new stuff. Bass Player, Drummer seriously lay it down. New Violinist is tremendous.

Great Musicians with a vast catologue

by GMONEY on 6/29/23Ocean City Music Pier - Ocean City

So, this was my first-time seeing Bruce. I would characterize myself as a person who knows some of his catalogue but not a diehard fan. As it has been said before Bruce does not seem to care that people want to hear his hits at a live show. He tends to play a wide array of music and work in a handful of hit songs from the 80's and 90's. At this particular show he only played two real hits. While I enjoyed the show I would have love hear more of the classics. While I appreciate Bruce's stance that he is not there to appeal to the folks like me who know 6-7 of his songs, It troubles me as it is those songs that are selling 70-80% of the tickets. Would love it if he played the hits and then worked in some of his other material. I actually think if he took this approach he would turn people on to buying some of his newer works, in the end people were shooting for the hits and frankly this seemed to turn Bruce off from playing them. I will likely never go to see him again unless I am confident, he will play what people are there to hear. He should be proud of the hits and embrace them in my opinion. I have so many fond memories of songs Like Valley Road or Mandolin Rain, and seeing these songs performed live would bring back a flood of emotions and memories. For me that is what music is all about. It reaches back in time and weaves into your life and can create a high like no other.

Ok concert - better if you really know his work

by Nancys on 6/29/23Ocean City Music Pier - Ocean City

I had high hopes for this concert although I knew my seats were not good. I’ve been to other concerts on the OC music pier before so I knew more or less what to expect from the sound. But if you haven’t been there before, you should know that this concert venue does not have great acoustics. Regarding Bruce Hornsby, if all you know is his biggest hit (like me) you will find the concert interesting (some unusual instruments are played) at best. I did not find his or most of his band’s musical abilities to be as impressive as I’d hoped. Nor did the lyrics (many of which I did not catch due to the acoustics) seem particularly clever. The tunes are not catchy. I feel awful saying this, frankly. I will not be buying any of his music. Spent a lot on the tickets (may have gotten ripped off by a reseller) and wish I hadn’t. Would rather hear “That’s just the Way it is” now and again on the radio or xm or one of my other streams and leave it at that. Nice guy, though, and band seemed very happy to be there and playing their music. So that’s something.

    Extremely Disappointed

by MusicMaji777 on 6/25/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

I was really looking forward to this show, as I’m a fan of Bruce’s earlier songs. But the sound in this venue, that is usually used for symphonies, was horrible and very echoey. I don’t know what he was thinking doing a show in this place. I think it would have been more enjoyable in a garage. I also didn’t need to hear anything about politics or the 1619 project. Music is supposed to bring people together, though superficially, for a moment of illusionary unity and serenity. I think many artists have forgotten why music exists and Who it is that has given them their talent!

    Musicians who clearly love music!

by Sherry on 6/9/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

Bruce and his band clearly love music and showed this at every turn. They improvised a lot, so that the show was unique and you had the benefit of seeing them live. He said he does not just replay his albums, and gave lots of different riffs and takes on songs. Plus they were just thrilled to be performing & it showed!

    Creative Disappointment

by The Bystander on 6/9/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

Part of the reason that we attend a concert is the expectation that the the performer will play songs of his/our past. These are the songs that bring back great memories and make us feel connected with the performer. Unfortunately, Bruce stated quite clearly that he would not engage in ‘record replication’. Instead the show evolved into an experimental musical journey that left us feeling cheated. We paid for a performance that was never given.

    Bruuuce!

by TJed on 6/9/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

Great band! Always evolving, always unique. The jazz directions they’ve been mining are exquisite. And the sound is lush and rich.

    Disappointing

by B-rad on 6/9/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

Bruce does not play the hits. He even commented that playing the hits like the record was his "personal hell". His fans pay good money for tickets to hear him play the hits. Bruce needs to realize that his fans and paying customers are the reason he has a career. We do not pay good money for him to be happy. We support his career financially because we want to be happy and hear the great songs that he created just as we heard them years ago. Bruce, I guess its your world and we're just lucky to be in it. I'm glad that I paid my hard earned money so that you could get some self-satisfaction.

    Even better 2nd Time!

by ValGal on 6/9/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

2019 tour was awesome, but his latest tour is even better! What a show! It was simple, yet so many details to be in awe of. Bruce looks like he’s having the best time and he really knows how to make his performances feel very intimate. I love the sound of his newest album, but he has so many back songs I longed to hear him play. He tried to play as many of those most requested songs, with even a bit of humor, while introducing us to his latest creations. I loved it and by the looks and sounds of those around me, he is still as, if not more, adored today as he’s always been! Bravo Bruce, to you and your truly gifted band!

    Outstanding Time!

by ACE on 6/9/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

From the experience of the ushers, to our seats in the auditorium to when Bruce Hornsby himself appearing, playing a first song solo to The Noise Makers and their unbelievably Great Musical Talent to Hornsby’s phenomenal talent to his wonderful and humble interaction with the packed house fans to the encore song decided by the audience, this show was Nothing But Big League! I will whole heartedly recommend a Bruce Hornsby Concert to any music fan that wants to have a thoroughly totally enjoyable evening. PERIOD!

    Very Good Concert

by Don on 6/9/23Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts (fka Duke Energy) - Raleigh

No major issues, but the drums were too loud and overpowered some of the other instruments on certain songs. It was like a drum wall was needed. It is amazing how much music Hornsby has in his head.

As good as it can possibly get!

by Joe Slomp on 6/8/23Town Hall - New York

I've come to NYC to see my first Bruce Hornsby concert all the way from Rome, Italy, and I was gifted with a spectacular performance and unforgettable guests, Christian McBride, John Scofield, Kenny Garrett, come on! Bruce in top form, I could not have asked for more, really. A bit disappointed by the strict time slot that the venue apparently allowed, which bumped everybody off stage at 10pm sharp, but other than that, I am utmostly satisfied with the experience, and please BH if you're reading this, do come to Italy at some point, will ya?

    Shirt set list, curfew?

by SS on 6/6/23Town Hall - New York

My wife and I have seen Mr Hornsby multiple times Count Basie City Winery Town hall ect. The evening billed part of Jazz Fest I get it but 10:00 curfew doesn’t make sense. Also short set list hits Spider, Innocence, Way it is. A lot of talented musicians on stage. Number of empty seats, would have expected more from Bruce being one of the top five piano players of all time. I guess see you further down the road!
