With five Grammy wins and sixteen nominations, Brittany Howard follows up her massively acclaimed solo debut Jaime with the new single "What Now" and teases what is to come from her upcoming album of the same name. Like Jaime (whose celebratory single "Stay High" earned a Grammy for Best Rock Song), What Now finds Howard once again taking the helm as producer and working closely with longtime collaborator engineer/co-producer/co-mixer Shawn Everett. The album emerged through a deliberately free-flowing process, with Howard doubling down on the unfettered creativity that's long defined her work. "I don't ever plan too deeply, but usually I show up with the songs almost fully formed," she says. "There was a lot of exploring sounds on the spot, and trusting that the right thing would come to us."
"What Now" takes on a potent urgency fueled by its syncopated grooves, blistering guitar riffs, and fiercely honest lyrics ("I've been making plans that don't include you anymore/My heart wants to stay but I don't know what for"). "'What Now' is maybe the truest and bluest of all the songs," says Howard. "It's never my design to hurt anyone's feelings, but I needed to say what was on my mind without editing myself. I like how it's a song that makes you want to dance, but at the same time the lyrics are brutal."
There's a double meaning to the title of What Now. "With the world we're living in now, it feels like we're all just trying to hang onto our souls," says the Nashville-based musician and frontwoman for four-time Grammy Award-winning Alabama Shakes. "Everything seems to be getting more extreme and everyone keeps wondering, 'What now? What's next?'

Brittany has an amazing voice, no doubt: but it felt like she didn’t know she had an audience. She didn’t acknowledge the audience, she didn’t connect with the audience, and her performance was brief and boring. No longer a fan.
Very innovative with her blending of genres. Love how she’s not limited to just southern rock/soul and is willing to push boundaries.
Brittany Howard gave such a positive, high energy show. I’m so glad she’s back touring. Her guitar, dance and performance skills made me smile so big. I didn’t want the show to end.
What a talent!! She can play the guitar great, awesome vocals. Her energy through out the concert was great! The band and backup singers were great!
Saw Brittany Howard Thursday night at Tennessee theater. First time was with Alabama Shakes same venue.Show was totally different more R&B and soul this time still a great show great performance would liked to have heard her jam out more on her guitar.
Thoroughly enjoyed Brittany Howard!! My son and I came to see her and was also pleasantly surprised by “Loraine” as well.
We were just at the Tennesse Theater two nights before and it was great. Two-phase issues during this concert. The opening act was lousy. They opened with dogs barking and whining in the background and we couldn't handle it so we sat in the lobby. When Brittany came out, the sound mix was atrocious. We kept waiting for a soundboard adjustment but it never happened. The vocals were lost and we were frustrated and disappointed. We hung in for five songs and left. I spoke to two managers at the theater before we left and watched others streaming out as well. Brittany is good, but you have to have decent sound to enjoy the experience.
This is not an Alabama Shakes show. She does her own thing and really puts on a show. This girl can sing and her back up band is awesome.
Love her new single, very funky and fun to listen to. Just wish she could still perform with The Shakes.
Saw hear back in 2019 when she was on Jaime tour. Definitely more experimental than Alabama Shakes, but her music still has a soul to it.
Got tickets expecting Alabama Shakes. Got something completely different and left Brittney is incredibly talented, but we all want to have more music from the Shakes!
Saw her back in 2019 during her Jaime tour. Her show was great, prob because it was at the 9:30 Club in DC. Super cool to hear music that hasn’t been release yet.
Britany was wonderful. The venue is a mess. First of all the ticket said the show started at 7:30 when in fact it didn’t start until after 9 pm. There was no warm up bands and there was no seating. So we had to stand for over two hours before the show started. Then the drinks were too expensive. A 12 oz can of water was $6 and a 20 oz can of beer was $18. We will never come back to the Hollywood Palladium. When we inquired about seating we were told it was vip. No one was sitting in them.
The Fox in Oakland is beautiful venue that in my experience has stellar sound. I've seen a number of different kinds of artists over the years and they have all sounded great. I saw Lucinda Williams just a few weeks prior to the Brittany Howard show and the mix was perfect. When Brittany Howard came out, we could barely hear her vocals for the first four songs! Forget about the back up singers. I mean, if you can't hear Brittany, something is seriously wrong. They upped the vocals around song 5 (Higher and Higher), but the mix was just off the entire night. Basically, it was so bad that the concert, for me, was seriously compromised. Really disappointing. I saw the Alabama Shakes in this same venue after the release of the first record and the show was fantastic. Brittany Howard is a force of nature. She is a lot more polished now (I kinda miss the old version), but I was expecting a great show. I think her performance probably was great, the sound just didn't translate.
Brittany Howard was brilliant! Our best show of the year so far! She is a force of nature. Powerful! She was surrounded by a great group of musicians, and she is one as well. She generously shared the spotlight with them. About half way through the show, I heard the beginnings of an old great soul song Jackie Wilson’s “Your Love is Lifting Me Higher”, she and the band to the song and the crowd to another higher level The place went insane! The rest of the show was equally memorable as Brittany and the band teased out some great sounds. Then they came back for not one but 2 encores. What a night? And although we might have tended to the older side of the crowd, it was a mixed and a very good one. The Fox always takes care of this older gentleman and we had great seats.
Such a great venue for her & the crowd was spectacular. Had a blast!!
Brittany has a wonderful voice, but her background musicians were over powering. The excessive lights were also distracting. My favorite parts of the show were when Brittany was on the stage by herself singing or playing the guitar.
low end on the bass drum was so overpowering and muddled the house mix. couldn’t hear her vocals. it was horrible.
Ushers helped us, bartenders were quick. The music was phenomenal and I cannot wait to see Brittany Howard again.
