About

With five Grammy wins and sixteen nominations, Brittany Howard follows up her massively acclaimed solo debut Jaime with the new single "What Now" and teases what is to come from her upcoming album of the same name. Like Jaime (whose celebratory single "Stay High" earned a Grammy for Best Rock Song), What Now finds Howard once again taking the helm as producer and working closely with longtime collaborator engineer/co-producer/co-mixer Shawn Everett. The album emerged through a deliberately free-flowing process, with Howard doubling down on the unfettered creativity that's long defined her work. "I don't ever plan too deeply, but usually I show up with the songs almost fully formed," she says. "There was a lot of exploring sounds on the spot, and trusting that the right thing would come to us."

"What Now" takes on a potent urgency fueled by its syncopated grooves, blistering guitar riffs, and fiercely honest lyrics ("I've been making plans that don't include you anymore/My heart wants to stay but I don't know what for"). "'What Now' is maybe the truest and bluest of all the songs," says Howard. "It's never my design to hurt anyone's feelings, but I needed to say what was on my mind without editing myself. I like how it's a song that makes you want to dance, but at the same time the lyrics are brutal."

There's a double meaning to the title of What Now. "With the world we're living in now, it feels like we're all just trying to hang onto our souls," says the Nashville-based musician and frontwoman for four-time Grammy Award-winning Alabama Shakes. "Everything seems to be getting more extreme and everyone keeps wondering, 'What now? What's next?'

Great show, audio equipment not so much

    by V. A. on 9/27/19Beacon Theatre - New York

Brittany and her band put on a great show but the audio system in the Beacon theatre needs a major update. Sound was ok when she was singing a couple solos but extremely distorted when they were jamming out. Still an awesome night out, theater is beautiful. Would have been 5 star review if the place had better sound.

    INCREDIBLE!!!!

by JORDAN LEE on 9/27/19Beacon Theatre - New York

Ok First of all, our Usher Hector was incredible! He was super cool and friendly. We arrived early and he gave us really helpful info about the show and advice about when to try to beat the lines for the intermission. The artists we saw, (Nate Smith +Kinfolk/Brittany Howard) were absolutely phenomenal! One thing I will say is that the Beacon Theater must of had some sound issues. I kept hearing distortion from the speakers that was slightly disappointing, but to not fault of the artist so thats why I'm saying it was a 5-star experience.

Brittany & band was terrific - sound quality in balcony poor

by E. on 9/25/19The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

So disappointed with sound balance - band drowned out much of the vocals. Brittany's high energy, joyful performance was exceptional.

by Pix on 8/22/19Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Brittany Howard gave us an exceptional show, one that I wish would have lasted far longer. I am so proud to say that I was able to see Brittany provide such an AWESOME show at the historic Ryman no less!

Queen Performance But Ryman Let Down

by Yizzy on 8/22/19Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Brittany Howard was AMAZING as was the entire band, but we were very disappointed with the sound quality of the show. I’m not a musician or sound engineer so I don’t know the right way to describe it... but it the music was way too loud and overpowered Brittany - we couldn’t hear her - which sucked bc she performed a very powerful song where hearing the lyrics was critical to her message and I had no idea what she was saying. The Ryman is a venue where I don’t expect the sound to be bad but this night - it was very bad.

    None better

    by R. P. on 8/22/19Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Truly amazingly great! You could compare her to a lot of the greats but her own style separates her from the crowd. Probably the most energizing live music that I have ever experienced.

    Girl Can Rock!

    by B.Rushing on 8/22/19Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Wasn’t sure what to expect, only knowing 3 of the songs off her new record. Didn’t know most of the songs but can’t wait for the album to come out so I can learn them all. She killed it! Anything she sings is amazing and it all seems so effortless to her. Would definitely go see Brittany and her backup singers and band again. Great music, great venue!

Wow! The music and vocals were amazing - loved the show, just wish she’d thrown in a couple from Alabama Shakes.
