About

Over the course of crafting a 29-album catalog and architecting 40 Billboard #1 singles as a keyboardist, songwriter and producer, Brian Culbertson has charted his own unique course in music. Label him jazz and he makes a funk record. Call him an R&B artist and he drops an acoustic jazz trio collection. And you'd be hard pressed to name another instrumentalist of his ilk who can mount an elaborately designed concert production that will keep him on the road for three consecutive months.

Culbertson burst onto the scene in 1994 with a chart-topping album that he recorded in his college apartment featuring keyboard-led contemporary jazz tracks. Flash forward to present day, Culbertson has been going back and listening more and more to music that inspired him as a young musician such as David Sanborn, The Brecker Bros, Chick Corea, Al Jarreau, Pat Metheny & others in the jazz fusion world.

Whether you're listening to music from "Day Trip" on record or live in concert, you're hearing an eclectic, entertaining and engaging set from an artist at the peak of his power.

  • Excellent event as always

by fampro on 7/2/12Turning Stone Resort & Casino Showroom - VeronaRating: 5 out of 5

Was well surprised that this was a 'combined' event. Where basically the flipped between Brian and David's songs. It was slightly shorter than I expected, but always welcome to see David Sanborn. And I have to say having known nothing about him, highly enjoyed the energy from Brian's songs. Also come on Turning Stone, make up your mind, post that you don't allow video, but allow us to bring normal cameras into the place - because there were plenty of picture taking going on, but they stopped you if you held it up too long trying to get a video clip. If you aren't blocking the view, and NO FLASH or LIGHT like some people, i think video should be allowed too. Little disappointed to find out Brian was selling his CD's online autographed for $12.00 yet they were $20 at the show.

  • Good show!

by cabe277 on 7/2/12Turning Stone Resort & Casino Showroom - VeronaRating: 4 out of 5

I've been a fan of David Sanborn for a very long time, so getting a chance to go and see him live was out of this world, he sounds just like he does in the recordings; It was cool to hear. The show itself was pretty good. They played a couple of Sanborn's most famous tunes, "The Dream" and "Chicago Song," but those two were the only two I recognized. I'd never heard of Brian Culbertson until this event, but while he is a great keyboard player and gets a good tone out of his trombone, I certainly felt he was too much of a showboater. I think David's cause (helping introduce the world to up-and-coming artists) is very noble, however I would've liked to hear more of Sanborn and less of Culbertson.

  • Brian Culbertson & David Sanborn - The Dream Tour

    by GFT7620 on 6/25/12Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

The show was great. One of the best, if not the best, concerts I have ever attended.

  • *MAGICAL*

by KatzRKool on 6/25/12Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

To sum this performance up in one word, it was nothing short of "magical." These two artists are wonderful on their own and "magic" together! They are both true entertainers with amazing talent. Not only are they talented, but they are also personable, friendly and great to their fans - what more can you ask for?

  • Culbertson & Sanborn- A Dream Tour Come True

by ragsy on 6/23/12Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

If you have the opportunity to get to a performance of the Dream Tour, do not miss it. The energy of Brian Culbertson and the ageless craftsmanship of David Sanborn make for an evening of outstanding music as they "charged up" this house of jazz fans. Again, DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!!!!!

  • The Dream was exactly as its named!

Great interplay between those two & the dueling drummers was awesome!

  • No Dream Team

    by WSW1 on 6/23/12Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 4 out of 5

Music was very good but not great. Culbertson's expressive movements are excessive and they detract from the performance. Sanborn was much better than last year when he was not feeling well. Wish he would mix in "Georgia". Flashing ceiling lights hurt my eyes. Too bright in a dark room. Greens are especially good. You need to have them more often. My complements to the chef.

I enjoyed these guys and would highly recommend this tour. I was not that happy with the venue but that isn't on the artists.

Really great/entertaining show. They started on time and played great music for two hours--no intermission and no opening act. This was a great evening of good music. David is as fabulous as ever and Brian is a breath of fresh air. All the musicians were excellent as well.

  • Culbertson/Sanborn Concert

by Pepsalt on 6/23/12Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and i was visiting Washington DC and i heard Brian Culbertson as a guest DJ on XM radio and he was also introducing his new album.. I went to his website to get more information about his album and saw he was going to be in DC while we were there. The Birchmere was a perfect venue for a smooth jazz concert. The people at the Birchmere were extremely helpful, I emailed the with some questions about the location and transportation and they replied quickly. Being from out of town we felt at home.

  • Talented and Fun Duo!

by Kenin on 6/22/12Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Great night at the Birchmere for The Dream Tour. I have seen David Sanborn in the past and love him. I wasn't sure what to expect of Brian Culbertson. Well, I was not disappointed! Culbertson is hugely talented and had the audience on their feet more than once. His skill level is equal to his ability to engage the audience. He has an energetic spirit that is contagious. He brought a light side out in Sanborn that was really fun to witness. For you Sanborn fans, he does not disappoint as he plays some of his oldies, mixed with some newer music. Sanborn and Culbertson are so well matched and compliment each other so well - they are a "Dream" to watch. I didn't really know much of Culbertson, but am now a huge fan! A great night had by all!

  • The unexpected surprise

by Jazzyfin on 6/22/12Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 4 out of 5

I went to the show to see my favorite sax man, but ended up a renewed fan of Brian. His attitude and stage presence was infectious. He commanded the stage and the spotlight from my aged favorite. David was more talkative that I had experienced in the past but the two provided an excellent experience together and you shouldn't miss this opportunity if it comes to your town. A must see.
