About

Over the course of crafting a 29-album catalog and architecting 40 Billboard #1 singles as a keyboardist, songwriter and producer, Brian Culbertson has charted his own unique course in music. Label him jazz and he makes a funk record. Call him an R&B artist and he drops an acoustic jazz trio collection. And you'd be hard pressed to name another instrumentalist of his ilk who can mount an elaborately designed concert production that will keep him on the road for three consecutive months.

Culbertson burst onto the scene in 1994 with a chart-topping album that he recorded in his college apartment featuring keyboard-led contemporary jazz tracks. Flash forward to present day, Culbertson has been going back and listening more and more to music that inspired him as a young musician such as David Sanborn, The Brecker Bros, Chick Corea, Al Jarreau, Pat Metheny & others in the jazz fusion world.

Whether you're listening to music from "Day Trip" on record or live in concert, you're hearing an eclectic, entertaining and engaging set from an artist at the peak of his power.

the lighting really could have been better. having to look at those bright lights was annoying. the music was fine, kind of loud so foam earplugs can help to deal with the overampliifcaiton. note to band: if you want to do latin flavor music, you really need to get conga players. why two drummers? overkill. get some latino conga and other percussion and it'll be AWESOME. I'm just sayin' ...

The Mahaffey theater was nice venue and the first tune that Brian and David did was worth the price of the ticket and everything after that was icing on the cake.

  • Brian and David make some great jazz music!

David Sanborn plays that sax like it was an extension of his body, and Brian Culbertson makes love to his keyboard on stage. What an awesome evening! Being able to get my picture with both of them was the cherry on top!

When two great musicians form a bond because they found such admiration for each others talents and realize they are on the same wavelength musically, it's magic. Then they surround themselves with stella musicians and go on tour for the fun of it, that's awesome. I could tell from the first powerful rockin' song that this was going to be a concert in my top 5. Two drummers provided the punch and the rest of the group provided the heat. There were tender moments and hilarious moments too. Just enough of them to provide some change in the atmosphere. Best of all was watching two of the greatest musicians I've seen have such a great time. As a musician myself, I know the feeling when a gig is a great time or just a job. You could tell these guys really loved doing this tour.

Brian culbertson gets better and better every time I see him. His high energy level has rubbed off on my all time favorite David sanborn and together they make incredible music. The Mahaffey is a beautiful venue with fabulous acoustics. We had an amazing time.

Great performances by David and particularly Brian. So much talent and energy! Nice mix of upbeat funky jazz and slower more romantic jazz. We enjoyed the show a lot!

  • Culbertson and Sanborn are incredible!

by DFPlovesJazz on 8/18/12The Mahaffey - St PetersburgRating: 5 out of 5

Sandborn brings the perfection of a seasoned artist, Culbertson brings the energy and incredible talent, the band was over the top great - what a fun time. I NEVER dance, but couldn't stay in my seat for this one (hope nobody saw my attempt at dancing). I told a friend about it and raved so much, he booked tickets to the Charleston, SC show and we live in Florida! Don't miss this one!

Brian Culberton & David Sanborn were off the chain!! I can never get tired of seeing both of them perform. I have had the opportunity to see both of them play on the recent Smooth Jazz Cruise and their performance was just as amazing!! Brian is a ball of energy and David Sanborn is a treasure. We are so blessed to be able to see him perform twice at the Turning Stone. Please bring them back!!

I thought David Sanborn was opening up for Culbertson and was surprised that they were playing together. The show was great but I thought it would be longer.
