About

Over the course of crafting a 29-album catalog and architecting 40 Billboard #1 singles as a keyboardist, songwriter and producer, Brian Culbertson has charted his own unique course in music. Label him jazz and he makes a funk record. Call him an R&B artist and he drops an acoustic jazz trio collection. And you'd be hard pressed to name another instrumentalist of his ilk who can mount an elaborately designed concert production that will keep him on the road for three consecutive months.

Culbertson burst onto the scene in 1994 with a chart-topping album that he recorded in his college apartment featuring keyboard-led contemporary jazz tracks. Flash forward to present day, Culbertson has been going back and listening more and more to music that inspired him as a young musician such as David Sanborn, The Brecker Bros, Chick Corea, Al Jarreau, Pat Metheny & others in the jazz fusion world.

Whether you're listening to music from "Day Trip" on record or live in concert, you're hearing an eclectic, entertaining and engaging set from an artist at the peak of his power.

It didn't even matter that that the show was on a MONDAY, THE BIRCHMERE WAS THE PLACE TO BE. Brian Culbertson, singers and his band were AWESOME, GREAT, SUPREME, JUST WONDERFUL, PERSONABLE, ENERGETIC. One the greatest show I have seen, and I have seen a lot of shows. Myself and my girl friends were truly entertained and WOW, the performance was off the chain. I would recommend this show without no hesitations. Brian, the singers, and the band jammed together like no other. A WONERFUL OUTING FOR THE LADIES!!!! . Thank you. Thank you.

We have seen Brian Culberston live many, many times, one of our favorite performers...we were expecting same show as last time we had seen him but it was entirely new, very entertaining show....Brian gets better and better as he gets "older", but we missed his Dad.....Selena Albright was very good also!!!!!

  • A bit tired...

    by Keith3SaxMan2 on 4/17/13Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 4 out of 5

Brian always brings the energy to his shows, however, it seemed the group was a bit tired from the long weekend; shows at Berks Jazz Fest and Rams Horn Annapolis took some zapp from them. I do not like lip singing for live performances; some of the vocals were taped. The reason I go to live shows is to hear it live, not memorex...

  • In The Stratosphere!!

    by Pumpkin15 on 4/17/13Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Brian was totally unbelievable! From his first song, which he did with the late godfather of GoGo, Chuck Brown, to the very last, he was incredible. The other musicians, and his singers were great too, but Brian...... He has great stage presence, and he was constantly engaging the audience. After the show, I had an opportunity to meet him and get his autograph! My entire night was unforgettable, and I plan on traveling to one of his shows this summer. If you ever have the opportunity to see this fabulous musician, don't pass it up!!!!!

The show was amazing! The new artists that accompanied him were awesome. Their voices were truly electrifying. Selina really showcased her voice range and Brian's music has never lost its flavor. I will be there for all of his shows in the near future at the Birchmere, God willing!

  • "An amazing night of music"

by HOCK on 4/12/13B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This is the 2nd time seeing Brian Culbertson and he's just getting better. He has put together a great band with fantastic singers and his show is not to be missed. Crowd was a little quiet before he started but that ended as soon as the first notes came from his keyboard. He is one of the finest keyboard artist's playing smooth jazz and funk out there. I highly recommend anyone who likes this type of music to come out and listen. Can't wait for a return date to N.Y.C.

I was pleasantly surprised that BB Kings was a nice place. Brian Culberton was fabulous. I can't wait until he's in the surrounding NYC area again so we can attend another concert. What a talent.

Brian Culbertson was excellent. He is a "force". The two main negatives are: the acoustics were pretty bad (the music was loud but the clarity and sharpness was missing, and the other thing, which has to do with the venue, is that I was sitting at a table next to some people that were obviously drinking too much, and talked very loudly throughout the entire concert. I'm not sure if I would go back to B.B. Kings because of these two major problems, which drastically lessened my experience.

  • Brian Culbertson Brillant

by Jazzydew on 4/7/13Jazz Alley - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

This show was totally amazing. He is a genius at what he does musically to the ear and the soul of the individual who witness any of his performance. You are defiantly taken on a musical journey. And the segment in his performance where he took the crowd to church made me want to get up and do my gospel holy dance. His band is one to be reckon with they set the bar high. The vocals were on point as well. I was so glad i was there to be part of an amazing set.

  • Brian C. Excellent - as always

    by sm111 on 4/6/13Jazz Alley - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

Brian opened his show with some of his older music (Bring back the Funk CD) - and played some of his newer music (Dreams CD). Brian so so much energy when he plays! His band was excellent - drummer and bass players were very good. My wife and I went to hear him play in 2012 - we went this year 2013. The new members in the band - and vocals were awesome. Although Brian shares the show with everyone - it is clear that he is in charge. I'd highly recommend this concert to anyone looking for an unbelievable night out. Hope Brian comes back to Seattle next year. Thanks for visiting us in Seattle Brian!

  • Front row was painful!

by Saxman48 on 9/29/12The Dallas Events Center at Texas Station Gambling Hall & Hotel - North Las VegasRating: 4 out of 5

Performance was great. Sound was poor. Pretty much everything was cranked up except the horns. I would guess sound man is a head-banger. Very unfortunate because I've seen both these guys before and with proper sound, they were great! Front row seats were awful. We were smack in front of the speakers for the bass drum. View wasn't that great either.

  • Culbertson and Sanborn Rocked The House!!!

by keepinitrealincali on 9/29/12The Dallas Events Center at Texas Station Gambling Hall & Hotel - North Las VegasRating: 5 out of 5

I flew in from California to see Brian Culbertson and David Sanborn, as well as take Vegas in for the weekend as it had been almost three years since my last visit to 'Sin City.' I had seen this duo when they swung though Sacramento, CA back in July on their "The Dream Tour" (appropriately named for Culbertson's latest CD release 'Dreams' and the 25th anniversary of Sanborn's song called 'The Dream') and what a "DreamTeam" this was! These two didn't disappoint in Sac Town and again rocked the house at Vegas' Texas Station Gambling Hall & Hotel. I love Sanborn and have been a big fan of his for over 30 years and he's just as good as he's always been. Although I was familiar with Culbertson's music, I wouldn't say I was a fan (I came to see Sanborn) but after seeing him two times this summer, I'd say I'm now a fan girl. There was a lot of chemistry between Sanborn and the almost-30-years- younger Culbertson. It was obvious these two genuinely like each other. In his late 60s now, Sanborn still looks fantastic and it's clear he's got a lot of playin' left in him. David and Brian were just as impressive at the meet-n-greet after the show, taking their time with each fan who wanted to meet and talk to them.

  • OH MAMA!!!

by RicknJune on 9/27/12The Dallas Events Center at Texas Station Gambling Hall & Hotel - North Las VegasRating: 5 out of 5

I dragged my wife to this show in Vegas (we are from San Antonio, TX) because I am and will always be a HUGE David Sanborn fan! With the occasional exception of the people working the sound board (WAKE UP GUYS, Dave is playing!!!), this was an AMAZING show! Dave is the best sax player who has ever lived so I knew he would be awesome (and he was). But Brian Culbertson was just as great as Dave was! Although Dave's microphones (vocal and instrumental) were considerably lower than the rest of the mics (thanks for nothing sound crew) for much of the show, he and Brian showed great chemistry onstage while playing a mixture of their individual tunes. And, although I had heard of Culbertson before, I was unaware of the style of music he played. Based on this show, I would have to say his music is very melodic and sensual. He is immensely talented (he plays a mean trombone too!) and outs on a good show. My favorite concert ever was a show where Dave opened for Al Jarreau back in the early 80's (I have been to jazz shows featuring Koz, Maynard, Spyro Gyra, Kenny G, Jarreau solo and others lesser known). This is at least my second favorite concert ever! I would pay to see this show again if they played anywhere near home. A great night of music and entertainment that I will never forget! Thank you Dave and Brian.

Enjoyed the music very much. Band is very good, entertaining. However, the acoustics of the room did not support the music well. Some of the keyboard playing sounded so sharp it almost hurt our ears. Need to have a venue with better acoustics.

In a word...excellent! They played very well together. The sound was good and the music soothing. Well worth the money. Love Brian and David, the legend that he is just kicked the whole experience up several notches. Excellent show!
