About

Boys Like Girls are a pop-rock band that formed in 2005. The quartet skyrocketed up the charts with anthemic singles like “The Great Escape” and “Love Drunk,” with the latter’s accompanying music video featuring High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale. Their two breakthrough singles were followed by a sweeping emo-tinged ballad featuring Taylor Swift, “Two Is Better Than One,” which helped the band’s second album (2009’s Love Drunk) land in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200. In 2012, the band’s frontman Martin Johnson began writing/producing music for everyone from blink-182 to Avril Lavigne, leading to Boys Like Girls going on hiatus (reforming sporadically to tour between 2016 and 2020). In May 2023, the band released “Blood and Sugar,” the first single from their upcoming fourth album and their first new song in over a decade.

  • boys like girls- all american rejects- thereadyset

by jakwan on 9/18/12Utica Memorial Aud - UticaRating: 4 out of 5

blg and aar were both great. my night would have been great if the opening band the ready set didn't play... they didn't correctly adjust the mics and their music was spotty at best.

  • Aar and boys like girls!

Very awesome venue-Utica memorial auditorium! Sound quality was great bands were sexy and awesome live! All American rejects and boys like girls rocked! Thanks for an awesome time!

  • AAR was great, BLG made me leave.

The Ready Set was pretty good and the All-American Rejects were awesome. But I have to say that Boys Like Girls set was horrible. First off, whoever did the sound had the bass cranked so high I though I was going to crap my pants and my head was going to explode. And good god they screwed around doing crappy solo's, playing "Happy Birthday" two damn times and a bunch of weird interludes. I got sick of it, got up, and left. If they would have actually played some songs for at least the majority of the set I probably would have stayed. I even had meet and greet tickets for AAR that I never got to use. I stood in the line for it seemed like eternity and they said that they would be out once boys like girls finished. Well they continued with the pathetic excuse for a set forever and I finally got sick of hearing it so I left. I will see AAR again any day, but boys like girls...not.

Very good concert - especially considering the fact that this isn't the biggest music event area.

  • Boys Like Girls with We The Kings was FANTASTIC!!

by Zimikins on 8/24/10Iowa State Fair - Des MoinesRating: 5 out of 5

We The Kings opened up and rocked the stage for about 50 minutes!! The sound and screens was fantastic. Boys Like Girls continued after a short break and played for about 1 1/2 hours!! The whole crowd was dancing, cheering and singing!! It was an awesome concert and we would recommend the show to everyone.

  • Boys Like Girls was great

We enjoyed the show very much at the Iowa State Fair. Boys Like Girls was GREAT!! Was highly upset that I had to pay fair admission to see the show...we only went to see the show and not to attend the fair.

  • Fabulous!

These guys put on an amazing show!!! My party of 4 loved it! What a beautiful night to enjoy great music followed by spectacular fireworks!!! Never pass up an opportunity to see these bands!

  • Somewhat Disappointing

by JKAH on 8/22/10Iowa State Fair - Des MoinesRating: 3 out of 5

We the Kings put on a great show, were entertaining and personable. They showcased their talent well and truly seemed to appreciate the audience. Boys Like Girls were difficult to hear, did a lot of crowd cheering and sing alongs. We were not as impressed with their overall showmanship or showcase of talent. The singing seemed to be a chore instead of entertainment for the crowd who paid to see them. The musicians may have talent, but it certainly was not an evening of showcasing it.

This was an awesome concert! One of the best ones I've been to in quite a while. Both bands had high energy throughout the entire show and the crowd interaction was great. Loved it!

  • We the Kings vs. Boys Like Girls

by CarrieBug on 8/21/10Iowa State Fair - Des MoinesRating: 4 out of 5

Having heard music from both bands (and liking what I'd heard), I was expecting a really good show. And yet, one band put on an amazing live show and the other was a bit of a disappointment. We the Kings is a new band with a refreshing sense of honesty and lyrical quirkiness, illustrated by their lead singer Travis. Their songs and energy were contagious and the Grandstand was rocking out. Songs like "Heaven Can Wait" and "Secret Valentine" were amazing, and the crowd really got going with "We'll Be a Dream" and "Check Yes Juliet". Plus, their cover of Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle" was extraordinary. They put on a great show- worth the price of admission. In contrast, I was disappointed by Boys Like Girls. Too much time was spent having the crowd scream (for no reason) and throwing guitar picks off the stage. The songs lacked a certain energy and familiar rhythms were off, throwing off the audience. "Thunder" is a great song, but their performance of it lacked the heart that it once did. "The Great Escape" played at the end, but by that point the show had been dragging on. I did enjoy, however, their performances of "Love Drunk" (to start the show) and "Two is Better Than One", both of which got great audience participation and singing along. While their performance was solid, it lacked luster and spark, particularly in contrast to We The Kings. Overall, I wouldn't see Boys Like Girls again, unless they were opening for someone better, such as Jimmy Eat World, Good Charlotte, etc. But We the Kings is worth the price of admission and I predict that they will be even better and bigger than the act they opened for. We the Kings was amazing and I recommend going to any show they put on.

Boys Like Girls was one of the best shows that I have ever been to. They sound amazing in person and are very entertaining! I would love to see them perform again!

  • by Anonymous on 8/21/10Iowa State Fair - Des MoinesRating: 4 out of 5

It was a decent show, I enjoyed it. Both bands were funny and had good music to play. The Boys Like Girls sound was a little weird from where I was sitting, it seemed a bit muffled, but it was still a great time! Good lighting, and camera work.

  • by Anonymous on 8/21/10Iowa State Fair - Des MoinesRating: 5 out of 5

It was completely awesome! I would totally go again!

  • Average concert

by nriedell on 8/21/10Iowa State Fair - Des MoinesRating: 2 out of 5

The music was good but there was too much kissing up to the teen girls and way too many Des Moines name drops. All the other shows I have seen flow well from one song to another, but this show did not. There was a lot of lag between each song. It was dissappointing in those aspects, but the music was good. They need to get some advice from the bands that have more knowledge of how to produce a good live show.

  • by Anonymous on 8/21/10Iowa State Fair - Des MoinesRating: 4 out of 5

This was my girls first concert for their sweet 16!! They had a GREAT time, We the Kings was good and BLG was "really awesome, Mom!!" We LOVED "TEAM EDWARD" The only bad thing was they waited around for their "date to fall in love on the farris wheel" and sadly nobody showed up for them :(

  • Boys like Girls need sound checks before the show

by hooty123 on 8/16/10Sleep Country Amphitheater (Amph at Clark County) - RidgefieldRating: 4 out of 5

I thought Boys Like Girls put on a great show with good vocals and music overall. However, whomever is in charge of the sound check of the equipment and instruments needed to do a better job because it seemed like they had to try to cover during the show sound adjustments with long riffs to work out all the interference between instruments and mics. Other than that, good show.
