The concert was spectacular. Mr Lockhart, who uses a hand-held mike to provide background, programmed mainly American composers, with excerpts and shorter numbers rather than full symphonies. The mix of "classical" and "pop" was appealing to all ages. His chosen centerpiece, Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," was performed flawlessly and inventively by Mr. Michael Chertock.
The conductor obviously loves what he does, and participates in humanizing his ensemble in fanciful, humorous ways. The traditional singalong at the end ensured audience involvement. Standing ovations bracketed a popular patriotic Sousa march. No one left UA's Centennial Hall unsatisfied, I hope the Pops returns to the Southwest.
