BOMBINO IN CONCERT:

Bombino is not your typical rock star -- sporting traditional clothing from his native Ifoghas tribe, the Tuareg guitarist tells the story of his people with powerful songs of political uprising and freedom. He has faced a number of political struggles throughout his career, but Bombino never fails to keep the positive vibes flowing at his live shows, promoting peace and unity with his uplifting hits and incredible guitar skills. Whether he's shredding out a lick on his electric or celebrating the spirit of his people, Bombino is sure to deliver one electrifying performance after another on his upcoming tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

In 1990, Omara "Bombino" Moctar and his family fled to Algeria to escape the turmoil in Niger during the height of the Tuareg Rebellion. Finding comfort in music, Bombino taught himself guitar at age ten, often imitating traditional ishumar songs of rebellion. Influenced by Jimi Hendrix, he decided to pursue music full time in 1997, but was forced to live in exile after a government-wide guitar ban was placed on his tribe. While in hiding, he recorded his debut album Agadez, which was released in 2011 and peaked at No. 1 on the iTunes World Chart. The album's success attracted the attention of The Black Keys' frontman Dan Auerbach, who produced Bombino's 2013 album Nomad, another No. 1 hit on both the iTunes World and Billboard World charts. Since then, Bombino has performed at a number of festivals and shared bills with acts like Robert Plant and Gogol Bordello. He will return to the stage once again for a highly anticipated upcoming world tour.

Bombino's performance was amazing but it was an extremely late start time- not until 11 PM. Seems a little bit late to begin a performance.

    Bombino was the bomb

by BackInTerrapin on 7/17/11Brighton Music Hall - Boston

The first song i had ever heard of Bombino was Tar Hani. I was immediately captured by the incredible groove layered with Bombino's amazing guitar threads and licks, and punctuated by a haunting vocal refrain that came around every once in a while to balance the fantastic jam. Tar Hani was being given away on the web site and i have listened to it quite a number of times, more then i have for any new song i have listened to in many years. So i decided to go she him live as the next obvious step since he was going to be in Brighton just twenty minutes from where i live. I am really glad i went. Bombino started off quietly with a very traditional tune of roots Tuareg heritage with just a drummer accompanying. Then the rest of the musicians came on stage and they started rocking. A couple of fast hard driving beat tunes got everyone moving. Some numbers in 3 time that were interesting. Then to wrap it up he delivered as he said he would when i met Bombino outside Brighton Music Hall while the intro act was still doing sound check, Tar Hani (read below about favorite moment). During some of the songs while Bombino was delivering his soul searching guitar lines that would reach in and grab you like he was talking to just you, he would also be literally bouncing around on stage sort of in an ecstatic frenzy bounce that was energizing to watch. It was a fantastic musical event that i will not forget and look forward to seeing Bombino again. I think he would fit in well at the Gathering of the Vibes as the band really is a jam band with strong Tuareg musical roots anchoring the sound. Guess i will have to say, don't miss him if he is playing anywhere near you.

I was blown away by Bombino's guitar playing. It takes something special to get a crowd dancing and shouting - he and the band had it.

Bombino is a musical and cultural wonder!

by 4RAINSahara on 7/17/11Brighton Music Hall - Boston

Bombino's music -- traditional Tuareg strings, beat and themes meet jimi hendrix -- is both exciting and touching. The band shares enough of the meaning of the music to its nomadic culture of the Sahara for the audience to understand the depth and emotion behind the tunes. With no introduction, however, the music stands on its own -- it touches the soul and sometimes brings one to a trancelike state of just feeling the music reverberate in you. Don't miss!
