First of all, I would like to give BHTM a huge shout-out for rocking the first set despite the unenthusiastic crowd they had to endure! The crowd was BRUTAL, the venue was tolerable; the Blues Traveler boys definitely were not on their A-game ... playing 3 cover songs and extending the other 6 into jam sessions wasn't their best. We have been following BT since the H.O.R.D.E. tour and I always love watching the Kinchla brothers interact with John but this show left us very disappointed.

  • Forgot who their audience was.

They kept leaving the stage & the band had extended jam sessions that weren’t great. They just seemed to be having fun, but forgot who their audience was.

  • Overall good, but slightly disappointing

by Brad on 8/14/23Rating: 4 out of 5

First time seeing Blues Traveler, second for Big Head Todd & The Monsters. BHT was very good despite a couple of technical problems. Wasn't mixed the best, but I know outside shows can be a bit of a challenge. Good set with a good mix of their 'classics' and new stuff. Would definitely see again. BT was a bit disappointing. Did some solid covers and some of their more known songs. Again, the mixing wasn't the greatest, but that's not a massive deal. Where I had a slight issue was the continuous turning of EVERY song in to a jam session. We didn't need a guitar or drum solo in the middle of every song. John must not have been feeling the best as a number of times, during these solos, he would go hide and sit down behind a bank of speakers. These breaks would range between 5-10 minutes. He also seemed a half-step slow on some of the lyrics--as we know some of their songs include a few "mouthfuls"of words so at times it's understandable, but it wasn't just those songs. Hopefully, if he is under the weather, he gets feeling better soon.

Beautiful night, stellar venue and brilliant musicians with catchy jam filled songs. Seen Blues Traveler 10-12 times. Tonight serving as a reminder of their brilliance. Popper is a virtuoso and whose voice maintains its strength and wide range. The rhythm section of Tad Kinchla and Brendan Hill are joined at the hip and tight.....miserably underrated players on their instruments. Chan Kinchla fabulous player and always the upbeat showman! Ben Wilson is an inventive player that is the key to vocal harmonies. Never a disappointment to see them.

  • Didn't know they were a cover band...

by Nick on 8/14/23Rating: 3 out of 5

I was pretty excited to see Blues Traveler, but didn't know a ton about Big Head Todd. Big Head Todd was fun and electric, and a pretty good start up. There were technical difficulties which was a bummer. Blues Traveler came on and was good, and fun, but they only played 6 originals, and then covers. I'm not sure why they chose to do so many covers when they have hits like Alone, or Mountains Move Again, or even Stand. It's like they didn't think Iowans new their album history. It was a bit of a bummer and I don't think I'd pay to see them live again.

  • Disappointed.

by Steakman on 8/14/23Rating: 2 out of 5

The long drawn out jam sessions deflated the energy and snoozed the crowd. I wish Popper the best. He is a great musician and I will always remember my shows in the 90’s. This show was disappointing.

  • All Around Great Show

by Weezy on 8/14/23Rating: 5 out of 5

This was a great concert in a beautiful venue! I loved both bands and they seemed happy to be playing here. Although Popper mentioned the bugs a couple times, they didn’t bother the crowd. I will be looking for other concerts at McGrath Amphitheater…..

  • BHTM saved the show

by Meg on 8/8/23Rating: 4 out of 5

BHTM was amazing. The Spin Doctors sounded okay but they looked unhoused and left me worried about them. Then the frontman (and lead guitarist) from Blues Traveller kept wandering off the stage for 5 min at a time during the middle of a song and the set sounded more like a jam session and elevator music than a concert. The guitarist vaping in the back of a non-smoking venue was a little hypocritical too. BUT... BHTM put on a great show. Their energy was high, they adjusted for the acoustics in the venue, and they played the favorites. I wanted more of them.

The Grand Sierra blocked off a HUGE portion of their parking lot on July 29 -- the reason we were told is that they were preparing for an event THE FOLLOWING WEEKEND. So, parking was a definite issue on the night of July 29. Our seats were terrific and the venue is clean and well-maintained. The father of the family in front of us lit up a joint as soon as the band started. That was unsettling. People who were excited about the band wanted to dance and moved down to the front of the stage. That is appropriate. We truly enjoyed Big Head Todd and the Monsters. What a professional and tight band they are! Even when a guitar wasn't cooperating, Todd casually gestured for a replacement, a new guitar was delivered and the song continued. We've been to a BHTM show before, but we felt like the band was even better than before. When Blues Traveler started, the whole vibe of the band was very "showy"-- lots of prancing around and odd hand movements. Maybe they were trying to inspire the crowd - but Mr Popper said, "Reno, you fucking rock"-- and then his bandmates continued to jump and dance around. After 5 songs, we decided to leave. We prefer the professionalism and the musicianship of Big Head Todd and the Monsters. Plus, we wanted to get away from the pot-smoking dad. 3 out of 5 stars.

The GSR in Reno is one of my favorite venues in town. However, the resort happened to be setting up for Hot August Nights so more than half of the parking lot was closed which made parking a challenge when it usually isn’t. However, the music of Big Head Todd and the Monsters and Blues Traveler made me forget all about the parking challenge. This show featured two phenomenal bands for the price of one. Both of them rocked the full house! The harmonica playing of Blues Traveler was amazing…some of the best I’ve ever heard. And I went to see Big Head Todd, who played some of my favorite songs. Loved it! Always live seeing them! Once inside the theater, it was easy to get cocktails, the sound was great, the security was awesome…5 stars all around! This is THE place o see a show in The Biggest Little City!

  • Odd Show

by SP on 8/1/23Rating: 2 out of 5

This was not the show I was hoping to see. Big Head Todd by far outshined Blues Traveller Sat night . It was an odd show and seemed more like Blues Traveller was having a jam session most of the time rather than putting on a show . John Popper- not sure if he wasn’t feeling well, but I couldn’t figure out why he kept leaving the stage. At one point when he walked back on stage. -he walked so slowly back to his podium that it was odd . They didn’t even stay for a possibility of an encore . I was disappointed .

  • Blues Travelers-Poor, Big Head Todd-10star

    by Jimmy V on 8/1/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Saw Big Head Todd and the Monsters opened for Blues Travelers. Big Head Todd hasn't missed a beat over the years. He was fantastic! The crowd was into it and going crazy. He played for 1:20 minutes. Blues Travel comes on and plays. Played for about 10 minutes then went in a "jam session". Lead singer-John Popper walks off stage and lets the band just jam for about 8-10 minutes. Popper comes out and sings a couple songs. Sings "But Anyway"doesn't really finish the lyrics and goes to another song and into another jam session. Popper walks off stage again during "jam session". Audience is sitting down and very quiet. Look around and no one quite knows what is going on and going into jam sessions and not playing or singing songs. After 30 minutes into concert we got up and left. While we were leaving there was a solid stream of people also leaving. Worst performer I have seen in concert. If you go to see Big Head, absolutely go and plan on leaving after that.

  • too many solos

by Joker on 8/1/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Decent show but the opening act of Bighead Todd and the monsters was better....Blues travelers played way too many solos and extended jams, not enough songs. Trying to rest his voice I guess.

  • brilliant

The performers Blues Travellers and Big Head Todd were stunning! The venue was great but the GSR charged me 10$ to check my purse. The bathrooms were disgusting.

  • Blues Traveler Review

by Disappointed on 7/31/23Rating: 1 out of 5

We saw Blues Traveler years ago at Jackson Rancheria! It was an amazing show and we were so excited to check them out again this year anticipating a fun night filled with great music. They did not take the stage until about 3 hours into the concert…..around 10 pm. After playing a few songs, the lead singer left the stage. Upon returning, they played another song and then he left the stage again. When he left the stage for the 3rd time we decided to leave too. What a huge disappointment. If he was leaving for health reasons this should have been disclosed to the audience. Not sure why he kept leaving but we will not be heading out to see this band again.

  • BT FAIL

    by B-Train on 7/31/23Rating: 2 out of 5

BT was a fail. I'd be pissed if it wasn't for the Spin Doctors and BHTM. Big Head Todd played one of the best sets I've seen in a while and worth the ticket price. I'll be looking out for them again. BT should have given the Spin Doctors another 30 minutes to cover the amount of time John Popper left the stage. The girl behind us at the show was practically crying because BT didn't play Runaround. Shameful.

  • 3 acts, the openers were good.

by Tracy on 7/31/23Rating: 2 out of 5

I went to see the Spin Doctors and Blues Traveler. Big Head Todd was a bonus. To be honest, for me the absolute best part of the show was Spin Doctors. They were engaging, entertaining and just full of fun. Excellent music and a throwback to why I loved them when I was younger. They played their major hits and a couple new ones. Unfortunately because they were an opener, it was only 30 min. I would have been happy to use the entire 3 hours with Spin Doctors! Next, after a intermission, Big Head Todd and the Monsters came out. It was good. He is an EXCELLENT guitarist and talented musician. This show was 45 min. Another intermission and Blues Traveler came out. I felt like it all went downhill from there. They played ONE, yes ONE song from their hits and a few new ones. During the "show"John left the stage twice, to what I think was take a break. He just walked off. He had been on stage for 20min when the first break came. His band continued to play instrumental for AT LEAST 10 min. It was music, but I was bored. People started leaving the show, in droves. When he came back he did a few more songs, then left again for another break. The instrumental jam session went on again. At this point I was a bit frustrated as well as bored. More patrons left. I wasnt sad when it was over. I would NOT pay to see Blues Traveler again.

I listen to your music all the time and finally had the opportunity to see you live! What a show! You guys are filled with energy that gets to my soul! Your talent is off the chart and we so loved you guys! I rock out to your music while cleaning my house and driving in my car! Thanks for an epic evening!

We saw Blues Traveler at The Venue @ Thunder Valley. The venue itself is nice. The band, not so much. Big Head Todd was entertaining, but the guitar riffs became a bit overdone. BT performed well and sounded great. That is, when Popper is ON stage. Many times he left the stage for unknown purposes leaving the band to fill in. Then they bring Todd (BHTM) on stage to perform more guitar riffs. Just got old after already watching him for an hour +. The worst part, as many reviewers mention, is BT didn’t play their biggest hit “run around”. This was my first time seeing them, would have been nice to hear the money maker.
