Blood, Sweat & Tears on Tour

Though they haven't released a new studio album since 1980, Blood, Sweat & Tears have never left the road. And although their current lineup features none of the players who appeared on their string of hit singles from their late-'60s/early-'70s commercial peak, their original mission — to fuse the compositional complexity of jazz with the power and precision of rock ‘n' roll — has carried on under the guidance of founding drummer Bobby Colomby, who no longer performs with the group but still serves as their de facto spiritual advisor/casting director. Over the years, Colomby has enlisted a number of singers — including American Idol alumnus Bo Bice — to fill the big shoes vacated by BST's most famous vocalist, David Clayton-Thomas. Since 2019, that role has been occupied by Keith Paluso, a former contestant on The Voice. But no matter who's belting out the hits, a Blood, Sweat & Tears show is guaranteed to be a brasstastic experience.

Blood, Sweat & Tears in Concert

Al Kooper could've retired in 1965 already a legend at age 21, thanks to his iconic keyboard work on Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone." But the restless musician would go on to play a crucial role in expanding the parameters of popular music when he joined improvisational New York group The Blues Project, before founding the even more ambitious Blood, Sweat & Tears with guitarist Steve Katz in 1967. The group's debut album, Child Is Father to the Man, was a groundbreaking fusion of rock, jazz, psychedelia and orchestral music, though creative differences would drive Kooper out of the band shortly after its release, with Katz and drummer Bobby Colomby seeking to push the group into a more accessible direction. They'd find their golden ticket into the Top 40 in the form of Canadian singer David Clayton-Thomas, a charismatic, big-voiced showman who contributed the signature single "Spinning Wheel" to the band's 1969 Grammy Award–winning self-titled album and led the group at their historic Woodstock performance that summer. Over the next few years, Blood, Sweat & Tears stood at the forefront of a jazz-rock revolution that counted Chicago and Santana as compatriots, showcasing their bold, brassy sound on swaggering originals like "Lucretia Mac Evil" and inventive covers (like their soulful rendition of Carole King's "Hi-De-Ho"). Clayton-Thomas left the band in 1972 to pursue a solo career (only to return in 1975), and since the release of 1980's Nuclear Blues, Blood, Sweat & Tears have existed primarily as a live act, with an infinite array of revolving lineups — in fact, no fewer than 175 players have passed through their ranks over the years. But under Colomby's direction, Blood, Sweat & Tears have survived and thrived into the 21st century with their big-band bonhomie intact.

  • Blood Sweat and Tears....Impersonation?

    by 1Purist on 6/19/11Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

Although I thought the music was good, sounded very much like the original, I kept thinking that this lead singer looks nothing like David Clayton-Thomas! Any way My sister and I left before the end, just because..., when I returned home I visited the official web page for the group, only to find that like a sports team, the team players change , but the team remains true to their original intent.. To Quote their official websight,, " Who picks the musicians today? A. When a band member leaves the musical director brings in a few choices and the band as a whole decides if he or she is BS&T materiel." So in whole, I would say that they were musically very good, and the lead singer very good, but if I knew then what I know now, I personall don't think I would have gone, because in a way I am a purist, and would want to see the original band, who made the hits, we have loved. Although I feel a little dooped, I wish them all the best.

  • Phenomenal concert!

Really nice concert! Really enjoyed it. It doesn’t get 5 stars because it could have been a bit longer. Otherwise it was great!

  • horrible show,,,

  • BS & T Cover Band

    by Zeeman22 on 6/18/11Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 3 out of 5

Wasn't going to go until I read some reviews. Very positive and mention Steve Katz singing Sometimes in Winter (my favorite). Well I guess Katz played some dates in the Northeast. He wasn't here. They didn't perform Sometimes in Winter as the lead singer was the only singer and you would have needed a different voice to attempt that song. Also some of the reviews talked about the band introducing some of the music. Not much of that here besides saying Carole King wrote Hi De Ho. I think the longest tenure of any performer was 27 years. The majority of the group, a lot less. A lot of solos and riffs. Musicians were excellent. Lead singer was decent. A very good cover band.

  • Didn't deliver!

by murraymoo on 6/18/11Hard Rock Live - HollywoodRating: 1 out of 5

We came to hear Blood,Sweat & Tears. We got a great deal of the band playing for and to themselves- jamming and jazzing endlessly BUT only heard 3 of the songs that made them famous. Many people walked out and by the time the concert was over there were whole sections empty. We expected a quality show and got a lot of horn solos that we never heard of. As a means of comparison- we saw Chicago last month and it was one of the all time great shows. Why? Chicago played to the audience. As soon as B, S& T played a hit and the audience started to rock- they played a slow jazz jam that noone knew or wanted to hear for 10 minutes stretches. Count us out when and if they return. People pay very good money to hear a group they know and love. Shame on B,S, & Ts as we got taken!

  • A great night out!

I wasn't expecting much but this show blew me away! Not only did they play the "greatest hits" but they also played some great "deep tracks". These are amazing musicians and I highly recommend that you go and see them.

Firs the acoustics were terrible. I didn't come to hear BS & T play Maroon 5 music. I didn't enjoy the lead singer jumping around as he did. The musicians were good players but the concert was a dud! I really felt like I was watching a cover band

  • great horn section

by dvc1956 on 2/19/11BERGEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER - EnglewoodRating: 4 out of 5

Not really remembering to much about blood/sweat/tears I do enjoy listening to good horn sections and was not disappointed. The show opened with a club band from NYC who played their own music but unfortunately their appeared to be something wrong with the sound system because they were tiney and weak sounding. The lead singer who later on did a song with BST definitley has the pipes and she showed it when she belted one out and sounded great with a good band behind her. BST put on a good show with plenty of enthusiasm and a front singer who enjoyed himself while performing. Overall it was a good, enjoyable night and performance and I would recommend that if you're into good music and musicians that you go see this historic band live.

  • BLood, Sweat & Tears was fantastic

by Muggsey on 10/25/10Penn's Peak - Jim ThorpeRating: 5 out of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed the concert. The music brought back numerous memories and sounded just like it did in the 70's or perhaps even better.

  • Sandoval and BS&T Were Beautiful Together

by HiProMan on 10/18/10Berklee Performance Center - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The best part of Blood Sweat and Tears is their songs are part of our lives since the 60s. And this is exactly the point they brought across with Steve Katz introducing the songs with a few words to share what it was like when they first came out. In the middle of the performance Katz was alone on the stage singing a song he composed about his days in NYC when the folk singers like Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs would drink beer and jam at the Kettle of Fish. poignant, nostalgic... But what would have been a toe tapping humm along was brought to life with the sparky addition of Arturo Slavador. From introduction through imporvisational breaks his trumpet snapped us awake and kept us looking for more surpises. A terrific compliment to the BS&T repetoire, and no better venue than at the Berklee Performance Center where that sense of jazz being reborn reverberates from the walls with every song.

  • Great Show, Fantastic Theater

by OldYanksFan on 10/18/10Berklee Performance Center - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

There were a number of members from the 60's, 70's BST. Nice to see lots of gray hair. The band was right on, note for note. They still have that GREAT horns sound. Did all their classic stuff and through in 2 or 3 songs from other bands. The Berkley theater might have the best acoustics of any theater I've been in. Just beautiful, clear, clean sound. Great mixing job. It was just about album quality sound.

  • BS&T disappointing but Sandoval delivers!

by WhiteMtnHiker on 10/18/10Berklee Performance Center - BostonRating: 2 out of 5

I was intrigued at the collaboration of BS&T and Arturo Sandoval and hoped for an inspiring, energetic performance. What I got was a retro, canned musical rendition of BS&T hits with a lead vocalist that wasn't far above a karaoke imitation of D. Clayton-Thomas. The band cranked it up when a sultry, amazing new vocalist, Chrissy Pollock, joined them and I sensed others besides me really wanted her to stay. She matched the overall musical talent of the group with her interpretation and intensity and gave a new life to an well loved BS&T song. But alas, she left, leaving us to too many encouraged sing alongs and hand waving without variation. Until, of course, Arturo Sandoval joined and the musicians lit up with the talent of his horn and the inevitable jazz and Latin rhythms he brings along. The man is a talent beyond compare, as noted by his many Grammy Awards and Presidential Medal of Excellence. My advice - see Sandoval wherever you can. He opened with a group of Berklee students and delivered songs that kept getting better and better. As for BS&T, see them live if you want a trip down memory lane AND you can erase DCT's voice from your head. Otherwise, grab their music out of your collection and live the memory while you listen.

What a wonderful concert! Excellent musicians! Every instrument stood out as being special. Loved Arturo, the special guest - an amazing trumpet player! So much fun to hear two of the originals Steve and Fred who played fabulously! Great setlist. Great old stories to listen to. All in all a terrific performance!

  • What a great show!

by Anonymous on 10/18/10Berklee Performance Center - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Blood, Sweat & Tears was fantastic. The Berklee Performance Center is a great place to see an event. Definitely worth the drive to Boston.

  • Very special evening

by mjkz on 10/18/10Berklee Performance Center - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

I bought these tickets for an excuse to get out of the burbs - had no preconceptions of what to expect and it was a real treat. BST are a group of very talented musicians who even as they gray have not lost their passion for the music or performing. Having Arturo Sandoval join then was icing on the cake. That man is simply amazing on the horn or the drums.

  • Blood Sweat & Tears, the best

  • Blood Sweat and Tears blew us out of out seats!!!

by lavenderose on 10/18/10Berklee Performance Center - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

This was definitely one of my top all-time favorite shows!! All the musicians gave their all and the performance was fabulous! The audience was encouraged to join in the chorus which they enthusiasticly did. The featured young woman singer, a graduate of the School, absolutely blew us away! The singers with the band still have IT, and it was a performance we will never forget. Hopefully, this will become a yearly ritual of this band returning to Boston and doing this benefit concert. Definitely unforgetable!!!

  • BS&T was fantastic

The concert was fantastic. The sound was unbelievable and the voices were far better than I thought they would be. Special guests were great also
