Blood, Sweat & Tears on Tour

Though they haven't released a new studio album since 1980, Blood, Sweat & Tears have never left the road. And although their current lineup features none of the players who appeared on their string of hit singles from their late-'60s/early-'70s commercial peak, their original mission — to fuse the compositional complexity of jazz with the power and precision of rock ‘n' roll — has carried on under the guidance of founding drummer Bobby Colomby, who no longer performs with the group but still serves as their de facto spiritual advisor/casting director. Over the years, Colomby has enlisted a number of singers — including American Idol alumnus Bo Bice — to fill the big shoes vacated by BST's most famous vocalist, David Clayton-Thomas. Since 2019, that role has been occupied by Keith Paluso, a former contestant on The Voice. But no matter who's belting out the hits, a Blood, Sweat & Tears show is guaranteed to be a brasstastic experience.

Blood, Sweat & Tears in Concert

Al Kooper could've retired in 1965 already a legend at age 21, thanks to his iconic keyboard work on Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone." But the restless musician would go on to play a crucial role in expanding the parameters of popular music when he joined improvisational New York group The Blues Project, before founding the even more ambitious Blood, Sweat & Tears with guitarist Steve Katz in 1967. The group's debut album, Child Is Father to the Man, was a groundbreaking fusion of rock, jazz, psychedelia and orchestral music, though creative differences would drive Kooper out of the band shortly after its release, with Katz and drummer Bobby Colomby seeking to push the group into a more accessible direction. They'd find their golden ticket into the Top 40 in the form of Canadian singer David Clayton-Thomas, a charismatic, big-voiced showman who contributed the signature single "Spinning Wheel" to the band's 1969 Grammy Award–winning self-titled album and led the group at their historic Woodstock performance that summer. Over the next few years, Blood, Sweat & Tears stood at the forefront of a jazz-rock revolution that counted Chicago and Santana as compatriots, showcasing their bold, brassy sound on swaggering originals like "Lucretia Mac Evil" and inventive covers (like their soulful rendition of Carole King's "Hi-De-Ho"). Clayton-Thomas left the band in 1972 to pursue a solo career (only to return in 1975), and since the release of 1980's Nuclear Blues, Blood, Sweat & Tears have existed primarily as a live act, with an infinite array of revolving lineups — in fact, no fewer than 175 players have passed through their ranks over the years. But under Colomby's direction, Blood, Sweat & Tears have survived and thrived into the 21st century with their big-band bonhomie intact.

  • Blood Sweat & Tears was dissapointing

by NitroBill on 5/3/12City National Grove of Anaheim - AnaheimRating: 3 out of 5

The band and the music was absolutely great. Unfortunately, the lead vocal left a lot to be desired. David Clayton Thomas he's not.

  • BS&T...Still alive and well!

by NUYAWKR on 5/2/12City National Grove of Anaheim - AnaheimRating: 5 out of 5

Having grown up listening to Blood, Sweat and Tears, yet, never getting to see them live, I jumped at the opportunity to take a buddy of mine (we both love bands with brass)to see them at the Grove in Anaheim. This is a great venue to see/hear live music and the food is pretty darn good too. The band did not dissapoint the throng of fans there to hear their catalogue of songs Their set was well laid out, they interacted with the audience between songs and the arrangements were well thought out and to my surprise, their musical proficiency was amazing! The lead singer had the vocal chops to sing Spinning Wheel and God Bless the Child, and he had the charisma and stage presence required to front the band. Each musician also displayed personality and presence, which made for a very entertaining performance. My only dissapointment was that they left out Go Down Gambling from the set list (so I listened to it in the car on the way back home)!!

  • Blood, Sweat & Tears was really good.

by TheMadPlatter on 5/2/12City National Grove of Anaheim - AnaheimRating: 4 out of 5

The musicians in this band are truly amazing and at the top of their field. They are so good that they would carry the show no matter who they have as their "front" man. I would have much preferred to hear a vocalist more similar to David Clayton Thomas, not an easy task. The band's current vocalist has a very good voice, incredible range, and a lot of energy, but in my opinion, he does not really match the style of B, S & T's music. Maybe a little more "throaty" baritone depth to his voice and a little less prancing around the stage would have helped for me personally.

  • All styles of music in one show!

by King on 5/2/12City National Grove of Anaheim - AnaheimRating: 5 out of 5

B, S & T was awesome! I'm a musician with 40 years of performing live. And these guys are great musicians. Impressive! Everyone did a solo and all were outstanding! Jason Paige was a surprise. When he first appeared on stage I was worried. But he was as good or better than David. What range. Looking forward to seeing them again and again! And the Grove has the most comfortable folding chairs I've ever sat in anywhere. The chairs in the first five rows are top notch!

  • Still the Best

I saw BST 40 years ago and have maintained it was the best group concert I had ever seen. Seeing them again tonite, they didn't disappoint. Few groups and artists, old or new, know how to create music with outstanding musicianship fusing rock, pop, blues, jazz and classical. No drum machines, computers, pyrotechniques, overproductions, dancers or bored performers mailing it in. These guys know how to play, create, jam and perform with a melodical and musical purity that is rare in the assembly line offerings that have become the norm. Go, enjoy and be impressed.

I enjoyed the concert. The auditorium was nice and cozy! Also smoke free, thank you very much. Blood, Sweat and Tears was awesome. We try and go to see all the 60's and 70's groups when they come to town. However, the volume was turned up so high, I had some difficulty enjoying the music!

  • BS & T---Natsukashii--Sweet Memories

    by BallyhooBoomer on 10/30/11Snoqualmie Casino-Ballroom - SnoqualmieRating: 4 out of 5

Great musicians! Small and intimate venue. Except for low volume on the guitar, sound was well-balanced

  • B.S.&T's: an ok performance

    by AgFox10 on 10/30/11Snoqualmie Casino-Ballroom - SnoqualmieRating: 3 out of 5

Oldies is what we came to hear and those were ok. There "new" stuff left me cold.

  • Still love the "Brassy" Sound

Excellent performance which brought back fond memories

  • Fantastic performance!! A+!!

    by Grrrfrend on 10/29/11Snoqualmie Casino-Ballroom - SnoqualmieRating: 5 out of 5

This, truly, was one of the most energetic and FUN concerts we have ever attended! The lead singer Jason Paige was hopping much of the time he was onstage. He's not one of the original band members, but honor their legacy he did! With a strong voice and energy to spare, he created an atmosphere of excitement! What a powerhouse! The band was tight and the horns were crisp, clear and clean. The drummer, keyboardist and smiling bassist were obviously quite talented, as was the lead guitarist, longest participating original member. We enjoyed every song, even some little-recognized as being BS&T's and some covers done by other artists. What a bargain at $50 apiece!! I know we will never forget this night!

  • Blood Sweat and Tears was memorable!

Great musicians, did honor to old songs and brought new songs to the program.

  • Blood, Sweat and Tears - Not what I expected

    by Frisbee23 on 10/29/11Snoqualmie Casino-Ballroom - SnoqualmieRating: 3 out of 5

The "new" Blood, Sweat and Tears has definitely geared it's appeal to a new audience. I was expecting a ramble back to a time when I was dating my husband and reminiscing along with all the old tunes, but instead I heard a totally new sound! Great for the young ones, but not so great for those of us who still like the "oldies but goodies." I would suggest seeing BST if you are looking for a great concert, with high energy, but not if you are looking for the sound we all remembered from the 70's. The lead singer was awesome and the horns are still up to par. I just wanted the old BST!

  • Great band

They played really really well although only a couple of members are original.

Brought me back to the late 60's early 70"s. They were fantastic. Having heard some of the earlier years of Blood Sweat and Tears concerts I was not disappointed!!

  • Awful!

    by BarbGB on 10/29/11Snoqualmie Casino-Ballroom - SnoqualmieRating: 1 out of 5

The BS&T concert was disappointing to say the least. There was only one (maybe two) members of the original band. I didn't even recognize most of the BS&T songs. They sounded nothing like the original. We left 45 minutes after it started. It was a waste of money and time. I feel dupped. It is false advertising. It should be called "revisted" or something else that indicates they are, quite frankly, only a cover band...and not a great one at that.

  • by Anonymous on 10/29/11Snoqualmie Casino-Ballroom - SnoqualmieRating: 5 out of 5

Great concert with some wonderful old songs but they sounded just like new. Nice venue with good sound system and lighting.

  • WOW

    by Fergusoni on 10/29/11Snoqualmie Casino-Ballroom - SnoqualmieRating: 5 out of 5

I have been a fan of Blood Sweat and Tears since high school and could not wait to see them again. I was a little worried they may not sound the same since David Clayton Thomas is no longer the lead singer. Well, Jason Paige just might be better. What a voice! They love doing what they are doing on state and I loved every minute of the show.
