Blood, Sweat & Tears on Tour

Though they haven't released a new studio album since 1980, Blood, Sweat & Tears have never left the road. And although their current lineup features none of the players who appeared on their string of hit singles from their late-'60s/early-'70s commercial peak, their original mission — to fuse the compositional complexity of jazz with the power and precision of rock ‘n' roll — has carried on under the guidance of founding drummer Bobby Colomby, who no longer performs with the group but still serves as their de facto spiritual advisor/casting director. Over the years, Colomby has enlisted a number of singers — including American Idol alumnus Bo Bice — to fill the big shoes vacated by BST's most famous vocalist, David Clayton-Thomas. Since 2019, that role has been occupied by Keith Paluso, a former contestant on The Voice. But no matter who's belting out the hits, a Blood, Sweat & Tears show is guaranteed to be a brasstastic experience.

Blood, Sweat & Tears in Concert

Al Kooper could've retired in 1965 already a legend at age 21, thanks to his iconic keyboard work on Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone." But the restless musician would go on to play a crucial role in expanding the parameters of popular music when he joined improvisational New York group The Blues Project, before founding the even more ambitious Blood, Sweat & Tears with guitarist Steve Katz in 1967. The group's debut album, Child Is Father to the Man, was a groundbreaking fusion of rock, jazz, psychedelia and orchestral music, though creative differences would drive Kooper out of the band shortly after its release, with Katz and drummer Bobby Colomby seeking to push the group into a more accessible direction. They'd find their golden ticket into the Top 40 in the form of Canadian singer David Clayton-Thomas, a charismatic, big-voiced showman who contributed the signature single "Spinning Wheel" to the band's 1969 Grammy Award–winning self-titled album and led the group at their historic Woodstock performance that summer. Over the next few years, Blood, Sweat & Tears stood at the forefront of a jazz-rock revolution that counted Chicago and Santana as compatriots, showcasing their bold, brassy sound on swaggering originals like "Lucretia Mac Evil" and inventive covers (like their soulful rendition of Carole King's "Hi-De-Ho"). Clayton-Thomas left the band in 1972 to pursue a solo career (only to return in 1975), and since the release of 1980's Nuclear Blues, Blood, Sweat & Tears have existed primarily as a live act, with an infinite array of revolving lineups — in fact, no fewer than 175 players have passed through their ranks over the years. But under Colomby's direction, Blood, Sweat & Tears have survived and thrived into the 21st century with their big-band bonhomie intact.

  • Not my favorite concert

by BurOakTree on 9/23/15Golden Nugget - Biloxi - BiloxiRating: 1 out of 5

Show started promptly at 8:00 and went downhill from there. First hour was comprised mostly of bass solo, trumpet solo, drum solo, and cymbal solo. Very few songs and none of the songs were songs I expected to hear. Left after the first hour as did a LOT of other people. Huge disappointment. May have played familiar songs later, but had enough!

  • Very disappointed.

Have been to numerous "old band" concerts and loved hearing all of the old hits that they had recorded. No, the entire band wasn't intact as it was years ago but usually the original singer and even some of the others were there and still had the same sound. Went to this one and not one of the originals were in the band. Also, didn't recognize a single song, didn't have anywhere near the same sound, heard murmurs throughout the audience about this, and left about halfway through.

  • Bo Bice was awesome!!!

by abolin on 9/22/15Golden Nugget - Biloxi - BiloxiRating: 5 out of 5

Bo Bice was awesome! Blood, Sweat, and Tears were awesome! They are great together. I loved the drummer, Dylan Elise. I loved the concert. However, I would love to hear Bo Bice sing some of his own songs. He is very talented on his own. He is one of my favorite artists!!!

  • Blod Sweat and Tears were AWESOME

We had sooooooo much fun. The band played all of their classics. Bo Bice nailed it. Do yourself a favor. Go see Blood Sweat and Tears if you get the chance.

That's a great show. More should go see it. It was one of a kind and I would go again if they would come here again.

  • Blood Sweat and Tears was Average!

    by MusicLover1954 on 9/22/15Golden Nugget - Biloxi - BiloxiRating: 3 out of 5

First, there is no original members in the band! There is one member who joined them in 1984. Bo Bice is good, but wrong band. He even tried to do a Gregg Allman, Midnight rider. Wasn't expecting that. Bad. If you like hearing a good cover band then go see them. But they are not the real deal!

  • Blood Sweat & Tears Featuring Bo Bice

by DodieSG on 9/22/15Golden Nugget - Biloxi - BiloxiRating: 5 out of 5

I remembered some of the old Blood Sweat & Tears songs so thought this concert would be fun, however I was primarily going to see Bo Bice. I was absolutely blown away by this show. The musicians were some of the best, if not the best, I have ever seen, and Bo was a perfect fit for the music, and made a really wonderful front man for the band. The energy and joy the band projected while playing truly engaged their audience and we all responded. They came back and played, at least, four more songs for encore. If you appreciate good music, period, you must not miss this show if given a chance. Horn players and drummer, alone would make it worth while.

  • Very Exciting

    by pjheath5 on 9/22/15Golden Nugget - Biloxi - BiloxiRating: 5 out of 5

Our seats were wonderful (second row)! I was amazed at how well Bo Bice sang and sounded very much like David Clayton Thomas, former lead singer of BST. I also have to say that I was grateful that people were allowed to come up and take photographs, or dance which ever they fancy. Not many venues allow that these days

  • B.S.T. Great!

by StRoseGirl on 9/22/15Golden Nugget - Biloxi - BiloxiRating: 4 out of 5

First time seeing them in concert. Bo Bice was fantastic as the lead singer. Great stage personality. Entire band was terrific, especially the horn section and the drummer. The band really looked like they were enjoying what they were doing and having a good time.

You don't know what to expect when a group rebuilds itself with new musicians but we were blown away by their amazing sound. So much like the original you could close your eyes and see the original band on stage. The same great horn sound as I remember from the 70's. A wonderful ensemble of artists that more than lived up to expectations. Gordie Brown Showroom was the perfect venue for this show.

Great show! We love attending shows at the Belterra Casino. There's not a bad seat in the house. We can't wait for the next one.

  • Fantastic show

by TheSmartCritic on 8/20/14Belterra Casino Resort and Spa - FlorenceRating: 5 out of 5

Blood Sweat and Tears did the standard hits but the new stuff took the prize. Bo Bice has gone from talented singer to great performer. All in the room were mesmerized by the entertainer and were left wanting for more. Here's for hoping the new songs will get some play on radio.

  • Poor

by john12 on 8/19/14Belterra Casino Resort and Spa - FlorenceRating: 1 out of 5

The mediocre vocals over powered the music. Did not stay to see if there was an encore.

  • Bo Bice is a good fit

I was listening to BST back in the late 60's and Bo Bice has the perfect voice for their songs. My wife and I enjoyed the concert.
