big, but so few things to do.

Gonzalez Convention Center - San AntonioRating: 3 out of 5I brought my two sons to Big Texas Comicon this year hoping to fill the gap left by PAX South, whihc has been canceled for a couple years now. We arrived in high spirits and in full cosplay, and cosplaying itself was a highlight of the trip, as many other people had joined in. We attended a panel with John Rhys-Davies and Lawrence Makoare which was the othr highlight. Sadly, after that, we quickly found there was literally nothing else to do but walk around the main hall until we got tired and went home hours earlier than planned. PAX was full of things to do, and most were free. This was more like a flea market for geeks. And while plenty of things for sale were interesting, we didn't primarily come to shop. There was very little in the way of organized activities to join at all and the main focus seemed to be funneling people into lines to get autographs and selfies with the celebrities in attandance, which is great if you're willing to spend $50 minimum for an autograph, and usually much more. this theme was present throughout - a nice Neverending Story exhibit was there for picture taking, but each character and prop there was a separate purchase. the Jurassic Park exhibit and the mini arcade were the only free activities at all. compared to the gaming-centric con we used to do as a father-sons day, where there was so much we couldn't fit it all in one day, this was quite a disappointment, and my kids (teenagers, not babies) were aksing to leave by mid-afternoon.
