About

Ben Harper on Tour

Ben Harper first graced the stage at age 12 and has never looked back. In the ‘90s, he took to the jam-band circuit, touring alongside big names like Dave Matthews Band, but soon grew a much wider audience with his poignant folk ballads, bluesy acoustic pop jams, fiery political anthems and moving covers of everyone from Led Zeppelin to Leonard Cohen. Since, he's proven just as dynamic alone with a guitar as he is alongside any one of his many friends and collaborators, like Jack Johnson, the Blind Boys of Alabama and his longtime backing band the Innocent Criminals. He's toured relentlessly over the years, performing in spots as far-flung as French Polynesia and across Africa, along with numerous festivals throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Ben Harper in Concert

Ben Harper has long been a potent voice for both freedom and feel-good music. The California-born singer-songwriter was inspired to pick up a guitar at a young age, after spending time at The Folk Music Center and Museum (founded by his grandparents), and attending life-changing shows by artists like Bob Marley. He began performing on his own at age 12 and spent his teen years crafting his sound on the slide guitar, before signing with Virgin Records in 1992. Harper's debut album, Welcome to the Cruel World, came out in 1994. He's been incredibly prolific since, following up with politically charged sets like 1995's Fight for Your Mind and catchy, beatboxing hits like 2000 single "Steal My Kisses." Over the years, Harper has never sat still, experimenting with fascinating fusions of folk, blues, rock, reggae and gospel, and proving himself a consummate collaborator, too. Just take a look at his impressive streak throughout the 21st century: He's collaborated with gospel greats Blind Boys of Alabama for 2004's There Will Be a Light; backup band the Innocent Criminals on albums like 2006's Both Sides of the Gun, 2007's Lifeline and 2016's Call It What It Is; rock group Relentless7 on 2009's White Lies for Dark Times; blues legend Charlie Musselwhite for 2013's Grammy-winning Get Up! and 2018's No Mercy in This Land; and even his own mother — the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ellen Harper — on 2014's Childhood Home. With all that under his belt, there's no way he's stopping anytime soon. His ambitiousness, as both a musician and activist, continues to be an inspiration.

Unbelievable concert. I have been to over 100 concerts in my life, all different genres, and nothing can compare. To play for 3 hours with no backup singers, no band, nothing, just Ben and a guitar. Wow!

Great performance with a set list that spanned all of his studio albums. Lots of old stuff, but also some great renditions of newer work with Relentless7 and Charlie Musselwhite. The encores (with two surprise guests) were a great way to finish the show. The audience was kind of noisy, and I was surprised at the amount of heckling Ben got during the performance. He handled it very well, but I would have enjoyed the show more with fewer interruptions.

What a great venue for Ben Harper - the sound was incredible. Talk about getting my money's worth - he played about 3 hours and showcased many different instruments and some wonderful stories. I felt like I was sitting in his living room listening to him entertain.

    Ben Harper: Amazing as Always!

by Lupita40 on 11/19/13Copley Symphony Hall - San Diego

How many singers/songwriters do you know that could be solo on stage with their instruments and just command the stage? Not many. Ben Harper is one of the few. The honesty in his lyrics and voice is a gift to the Universe. May he continue to be inspired and to inspire us.

May have the best show experience I have ever had. Ben's acoustic performance and pure heart poured over into the audience. I wish it never ended and the venue at Copley was perfect.

    intimate affair

by gsparky on 11/19/13Copley Symphony Hall - San Diego

Having seen Ben many many times its always a very different show which makes it great to see him live. This show was very intimate and interactive. I am all about the music and not about artist talking to the hecklers in the audience. Even though there was a lot of talking his music this show seemed more personal and artistic. I could actually feel some of the vocals through my body...this usually only happens with great guitar riffs.....I was impressed. After seeing Ben and Charlie Musslewhite this summer 4 times ( best duo ever) I was so glad to see Charlie join Ben for a few songs. He also brought out his mom to sing a few songs which was very touching. Ben also played for almost 3 hours....can't wait to see him again...hopefully an outdoor festival where you can stand and soak up such great music and talent

Ben Harper's Amazing show at Copley!

by solana1958 on 11/19/13Copley Symphony Hall - San Diego

Ben Harper surpassed all expectation for an incredible night of music. Ben played for over 3 hours, his extensive catalog, beautiful slide guitar, and even included his cover of Hallelujah. The audience was particularly adoring, and he responded in kind by giving it all,and was genuinely touched by the outpouring of love. San Diego loves you Ben Harper.

    Soulful and unforgettable

by AmbushNthaNite on 11/19/13Copley Symphony Hall - San Diego

Ben Harper played probably 20 difference guitars, the sitar, ukulele, slide guitar, piano, and 12 string. The spirit moves in Ben and he lets it out via his singing. Totally amazing.

Ben Harper is still on my mind!!

by Magnumhorse on 11/19/13Copley Symphony Hall - San Diego

Amazing night! Best money I spent in years!! I grew up going to concerts. I went to the Who and Grateful Dead in San Francisco on my 8th birthday.Keith Moon was drumming. Ben Harper is amazing and I loved every second of the night. I should have bought tickets on Monday night in LA. The amazing part of the night was not only does he bare his soul through his music he opened his life up and talked about it. I would go every night of the week and not get bored if I could !!!!!

Also, he played a new song from his new album coming soon...it's called Born To Love You...absolutely gorgeous. Incredible tribute to love.

I didn't know this man's musicianship background and it just wasn't to my liking. I am not a fan of Harper. I knew nothing about him .....thot he was a 'blues' singer

by kellystoga on 11/18/13Davies Hall - San Francisco

I'm so thankful Ben is doing these Solo Acoustic shows. I saw one of them in NY last year at Carnegie Hall and while both were very different from one another they both left me speechless!

A fantastic evening spent with Ben Harper. Beautiful voice and positive energy. I could've sat there the whole evening just listening to him talk and sing!
