About

Ben Harper on Tour

Ben Harper first graced the stage at age 12 and has never looked back. In the ‘90s, he took to the jam-band circuit, touring alongside big names like Dave Matthews Band, but soon grew a much wider audience with his poignant folk ballads, bluesy acoustic pop jams, fiery political anthems and moving covers of everyone from Led Zeppelin to Leonard Cohen. Since, he's proven just as dynamic alone with a guitar as he is alongside any one of his many friends and collaborators, like Jack Johnson, the Blind Boys of Alabama and his longtime backing band the Innocent Criminals. He's toured relentlessly over the years, performing in spots as far-flung as French Polynesia and across Africa, along with numerous festivals throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Ben Harper in Concert

Ben Harper has long been a potent voice for both freedom and feel-good music. The California-born singer-songwriter was inspired to pick up a guitar at a young age, after spending time at The Folk Music Center and Museum (founded by his grandparents), and attending life-changing shows by artists like Bob Marley. He began performing on his own at age 12 and spent his teen years crafting his sound on the slide guitar, before signing with Virgin Records in 1992. Harper's debut album, Welcome to the Cruel World, came out in 1994. He's been incredibly prolific since, following up with politically charged sets like 1995's Fight for Your Mind and catchy, beatboxing hits like 2000 single "Steal My Kisses." Over the years, Harper has never sat still, experimenting with fascinating fusions of folk, blues, rock, reggae and gospel, and proving himself a consummate collaborator, too. Just take a look at his impressive streak throughout the 21st century: He's collaborated with gospel greats Blind Boys of Alabama for 2004's There Will Be a Light; backup band the Innocent Criminals on albums like 2006's Both Sides of the Gun, 2007's Lifeline and 2016's Call It What It Is; rock group Relentless7 on 2009's White Lies for Dark Times; blues legend Charlie Musselwhite for 2013's Grammy-winning Get Up! and 2018's No Mercy in This Land; and even his own mother — the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ellen Harper — on 2014's Childhood Home. With all that under his belt, there's no way he's stopping anytime soon. His ambitiousness, as both a musician and activist, continues to be an inspiration.

    Ben Harper Ogden June 6th

Ben was simply amazing! He came out and opened with a story and proceeded to play Burn One Down. What a great intimate venue to see someone like Ben showcase his love for music and his fans. Better Way rocked the house and ended the first set and no one sat back down for the rest of the night. He was greeted with cheers, applause, and many "I love you Ben" upon his return to the stage. The rendition of No Quarter by Led Zepplin had to be one of the best moments in the concert

    Ben Harper rocked the house

Great show! Perfect venue to see him in. Good crowd...but if you want to have a conversation with your pal during a live show, can you go elsewhere? What is the point of "hearing it live" if you are going to yak the whole time?!

I was really pleased with the mix of music he played. I thought he connected well with the audience and came across as very sincere. I love seeing someone do what they love and be 'in the zone'!

Best Ben Harper show I've ever seen, and I've seen him front row at red rocks. The connection with the crowd was truly unbeatable, and seeing him in a smaller, more intimate venue was awesome. He came out for a few different encores, and I ended up with Ben's guitar pick from the night. All in all, a GREAT show!!!!!!!

It was an amazing, amazing show! Ben rocked it, as usual. He played a great mix of new, old, covers, rock, acoustic, slide guitar - he hit it all. He communicated wonderfully with the crowd and I think we all had a memoral evening.

    unforgettable, unmatched, well worth it

by jennjennz on 5/14/11Santa Barbara Bowel, Orpheum LA, Berkeley Greek Theater - SB, LA, Berkeley

Ben seriously has the best live show ever. We've seen him three times (Berkley, LA, and Santa Barbara). And we're buying our San Francisco show tickets tomorrow. His shows seriously feel like you're watching one of those historical concerts that go down in infamy and years from now kids will be wishing they had the chance to see him live. His shows are worth every single penny. You will not be disappointed!!!!! Can't wait to see him again.

    Come see us again!

by jasminehedwig on 3/26/11Riviera Theatre - Chicago

I went to Ben Harper's first concert in Chicago (think it was about 2 years ago). It was simply AMAZING. This was my first and only concert I have ever been to. As soon as I heard he was coming to Chicago I had to be the first in line for that concert! I was in the front row, right in front of him. I hope he comes to Chicago again very soon. Please come see us in Chicago Ben! Love, Jasmine
