About

Ben Harper on Tour

Ben Harper first graced the stage at age 12 and has never looked back. In the ‘90s, he took to the jam-band circuit, touring alongside big names like Dave Matthews Band, but soon grew a much wider audience with his poignant folk ballads, bluesy acoustic pop jams, fiery political anthems and moving covers of everyone from Led Zeppelin to Leonard Cohen. Since, he's proven just as dynamic alone with a guitar as he is alongside any one of his many friends and collaborators, like Jack Johnson, the Blind Boys of Alabama and his longtime backing band the Innocent Criminals. He's toured relentlessly over the years, performing in spots as far-flung as French Polynesia and across Africa, along with numerous festivals throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Ben Harper in Concert

Ben Harper has long been a potent voice for both freedom and feel-good music. The California-born singer-songwriter was inspired to pick up a guitar at a young age, after spending time at The Folk Music Center and Museum (founded by his grandparents), and attending life-changing shows by artists like Bob Marley. He began performing on his own at age 12 and spent his teen years crafting his sound on the slide guitar, before signing with Virgin Records in 1992. Harper's debut album, Welcome to the Cruel World, came out in 1994. He's been incredibly prolific since, following up with politically charged sets like 1995's Fight for Your Mind and catchy, beatboxing hits like 2000 single "Steal My Kisses." Over the years, Harper has never sat still, experimenting with fascinating fusions of folk, blues, rock, reggae and gospel, and proving himself a consummate collaborator, too. Just take a look at his impressive streak throughout the 21st century: He's collaborated with gospel greats Blind Boys of Alabama for 2004's There Will Be a Light; backup band the Innocent Criminals on albums like 2006's Both Sides of the Gun, 2007's Lifeline and 2016's Call It What It Is; rock group Relentless7 on 2009's White Lies for Dark Times; blues legend Charlie Musselwhite for 2013's Grammy-winning Get Up! and 2018's No Mercy in This Land; and even his own mother — the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ellen Harper — on 2014's Childhood Home. With all that under his belt, there's no way he's stopping anytime soon. His ambitiousness, as both a musician and activist, continues to be an inspiration.

The venue (Fillmore) was perfect, the sound was solid, and at the end of the day - anytime you can hear BHIC in person, is a good day.

    A true master

by dayitriedtolive on 10/5/14The Concert Hall - New York

This is the third time I've had the opportunity to see Ben Harper in concert and this performance has topped my list. The small intimate setting felt as if the audience was partaking in a practice session in his living room. For such tone and resonance to come from one person highlights that he is a master at his craft, the blues.

    breathtaking show

by BENmyLOVE on 4/5/14Copley Symphony Hall - San Diego

The Show in the San Diego Copley Symphony Hall was incredible touching. Ben was in a good mood, he was speaking and joking with the audience and he even played a song a guest was shouting out - the song wasn't planned. He played a few songs with Charlie Musselwhite and some with his mother. Ben Harper is able to play his songs in a way that does not allow anybody, his thoughts and feelings not to focus entirely on him and the music. I am a Ben-lover, through and through a fan, so my opinion is maybe not entirely objective, but this was by far the best concert - and that means something! The Copley Symphony Hall was the perfect venue for this concert. The Hall supported the power of music and created a wonderful atmosphere.

Ben Harper was incredible!!! He sounded great and is an amazing person who said hello to everyone who stayed to meet him at the stage door! And I mean everyone, because I was the last in line. He took time to learn people's names and really talk with them. He is incredibly talented and a wonderful artist and person! We had a great time :)

    Ben: Amazing as Always!

by Britleet on 12/5/13McCaw Hall - Seattle

I've seen Ben Harper many times all over the United States- with the Innocent Criminals, R7 and two all acoustic shows. This show in Seattle was so special! He finally spent some time interacting with the audience! He told us why Seattle is special to him, some of his song inspiration and another unique story about Jeff Buckley before he sang "Hallelujah."

It's Ben Harper, need I say more?

by GrannyWhisperer on 11/28/13Copley Symphony Hall - San Diego

This is only my second opportunity to see Ben live. The first I had to drive all the way to Denver (14 hours away), and this time I drove 6 hours from Tempe, AZ to San Diego. I don't think there is another artist I would drive that far from home to see. As expected, Ben Harper is ridiculous live... unforgettable show. I will be travelling again to see him, unless he makes it through Tempe.

Ben Harper is a Musical Genius!

by SusanCardosi on 11/23/13Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

Beautiful performance, helped immensely by the venue, which made it more sentimental and romantic. Ben Harper's voice is what sets him apart from other artists and at times the power of his lyrics and crescendos reaching all corners of the Disney Concert Hall (which simulates sitting inside an acoustic guitar) was overwhelming. A few notable moments were his covers of Mazzy Star and Jeff Buckley, but then inviting his mom out to perform with him during the second encore made all twenty-two hundred of us in the audience feel life the Harper family had invited over for dinner....not to mention his stamina as he performed for three hours not wanting the night to end! Thank you for such a romantic and intimate evening.

    Intimate and Unforgettable

by robbymet on 11/21/13Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

Just a beautiful and intimate evening with Ben. The artistry and passion in his playing and voice were a perfect match to the acoustics of the Disney Concert Hall. I could gush on and on, but I still wouldn't be able to sufficiently describe what a memorable experience this was.

    Ben Harper at Disney--- PERFECT!

by AcuJordan on 11/21/13Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los Angeles

It was the perfect synergy of a gifted, soulful and warm performer with an intimate venue and a doting fan base! Ben drank in the crowd, chatting us up, playing toward all sides of the stage, and sharing with us his 20 year journey of powerful music. He honored us by inviting Charlie Musslewhite and even his mom to the stage! The 3 songs with Mrs. Harper were so tender. Hands down one of the best individual music performances I have ever seen!

Seeing Ben Harper play an acoustic set at the Walt Disney Concert Hall has to be one of the most amazing musical performances I've seen. The sound in the venue was beyond my greatest expectations. Ben played 3 hours, of his most beautiful works.
