About

Ben Folds is widely regarded as one of the major music influencers of our generation.

He's created an enormous body of genre-bending music that includes pop albums with Ben Folds Five, multiple solo albums, and numerous collaborative records. His last album was a blend of pop songs and his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra that soared to #1 on both the Billboard classical and classical crossover charts.

For over a decade he's performed with some of the world's greatest symphony orchestras, and currently serves as the first ever Artistic Advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center.

Folds released his first book - a collection of interrelated essays, anecdotes and lessons about art, life and music - in 2019, which debuted as a New York Times Best Seller, and is currently hosting a podcast series spinoff of his book entitled "Lightning Bugs: Conversations with Ben Folds." In addition to solo rock and orchestral touring, he's also developing a new unscripted tv series with Fred Rogers Productions, continues to appear in various film/tv guest starring roles, and is working on two new albums.

An avid photographer, Folds is also a member of the prestigious Sony Artisans of Imagery, has worked as an assignment photo editor for National Geographic, and was featured in a mini-documentary by the Kennedy Center's Digital Project on his photographic work.

An outspoken champion for arts education and music therapy funding in our nation's public schools, has served for over five years as an active member of the distinguished Artist Committee of Americans For The Arts (AFTA), and serves on the Board of AFTA's Arts Action Fund. He also served as Chairman of the Arts Action Fund's ArtsVote2020 national initiative that encouraged voter engagement in the 2020 US elections, and continually advocates for improving public policies for the arts and arts education.

  • Piano as percussion instrument

by goodnightnurse on 4/11/10Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

Saw Ben in Hershey, PA last night. What an amazing experience. I laughed, cried and shivered by turns. Having listened for just a couple of years, I'm relatively new to Ben's orbit. That gave the vaguely uncomfortable, but deliciously outsider sense of "not quite getting the joke". It's obvious he's got a devoted fan base and the entire spectrum was represented with a heavy accent on geekdom. I'm quite sure that particular piano never produced such sounds in its life as came out of it last night. I saw Warren Zevon and a piano at the Forum in Harrisburg, PA in the early '80's, This was certainly on par, perhaps even better, given the intervening years have allowed me a much deeper appreciation of the artistry required. Ben pummeled his hands bloody for our benefit. His opening act was a delightful surprise too. Kate Miller-Heidke is possessed of a truly alien set of pipes and her accompanist played the guitar, "like ringing a bell" to nick Chuck Berry.

  • love, love, LOVE Ben Folds

    by FredJonesPart2 on 4/11/10Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

Ben is an amazing musician and performer! He's hilarious too! When he played Fred Jones, The Luckiest, and Evaporated, I actually felt like I was melting in my seat...it was beautiful! I got goosebumps many times throughout the night!

  • simply amazing

    by bb121 on 4/11/10Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

Ben combines creative song writing with unparalled musical performance ability. His performance is dotted with humor and personality and his interaction with the crowd adds to a unique and enjoyable experience for all. (although due to language, this concert is probably not suitable for young children).

  • Classic Ben & Kate Miller-Heidke was awesome

by YallDontKnowWhatItsLike on 4/11/10Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

Ben Folds was just amazing, as always. The real surprise was Kate Miller-Heidke who was his incredibly talented opening artist. My onl complaint? Kate ran out of CDs before I could buy one!

I got to see Ben play with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, that was cool, but Ben and a Piano was simply amazing. He tore that piano up and I swear it was the longest playlist I ever saw at a concert. Now to figure out the next time we can catch Ben and a Piano.

  • Awesome show!

by Kirrr on 4/10/10House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Great show! Although I'm a long time fan, this was my first time seeing him in concert. He played a lot of older stuff and not too many from Way to Normal, but he was just as good as I hoped he'd be! I will definitely be seeing him again when he comes back to Boston!

  • The Piano stole the show.

by TallJay on 4/8/10House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Great to see Ben solo. Only thing better would be a reunion of the Five.

  • Awesome, Satisfying Show

by NicoPadden on 4/8/10House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Ben Folds sure has a knack for putting on a great performance--and picking opening acts. I thoroughly enjoyed Kate Miller-Heidke's set and Ben, though he seemed a bit nervous at first, was a pleasure to see in concert again. He even got the audience singing in four part harmony. He is a consummate musician and entertainer. Several thumbs up!

  • Ben brought it back and killed it

by aldony on 4/8/10House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Ben got back on stage with just his piano and managaed to make the show quite different from his first solo shows. Ben was awesome with the crowd as usual and had a great mix of Ben Folds Five classics and his own solo work both old and new. Love seeing Ben, he's definitely one of the best entertainers on tour.

by KETR6530 on 4/8/10Curtis M Phillips Center for Performing Arts - GainesvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Saw Ben Folds in Gainesville at the PFA Center at UF. It was incredible! It is amazing what a man, a piano and a mic can do. Folds is a great performer. His is humorous, and his music is superb. He's great and interactive with the crowd and is very candid. If he comes near, it is a must see!

i've seen ben folds at least 4-5 times now and he tends to be amazing live. it wasn't his fault the crowd couldn't/wouldn't sing. overall a good show.

  • Ben Folds - Forever Impressive

by YAYBEN on 4/7/10House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Great show, entertaining and intense with his music. Would recommend him to anyone I know. Great stage presence and audience involvement.

  • by dudewholikesbenfoldsalot on 4/7/10House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Ben folds is one of the most incredibly piano players in the world today. He is an excellent song writer, with lyrics that are often humorous and insightful. Its great how he embellishes his piano parts live, and makes them totalllllyyy crazy and ridiculous. As a piano player who knows how to play most of his songs, the improvization he does above it really is incredible. He also works the audience really well. He has the best fans - hands down. AFter playing one of his his off the new album "Free Coffee" a fan proceeded to throw a package of java onto the stage. He playeed it cool and was all like "you know, im full of shit, this is the first time ive ever gotten free coffee"

  • I wish I could marry Ben Folds

by KikiBC on 4/7/10House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

He was so much better live than my already high expectations. He knows how to work with the crowd and get them involved and you can tell he is just an amazing musician. End of story. GO SEE HIM IF YOU CAN.

I had an awesome time at this event. Ben Folds was fun to see perform. His opening act, Kate Miller-Heidke was phenomenal.

I've seen Ben Folds nearly every time he's come to Boston in the past 6 years, and he is always amazing!
