About

Ben Folds is widely regarded as one of the major music influencers of our generation.

He's created an enormous body of genre-bending music that includes pop albums with Ben Folds Five, multiple solo albums, and numerous collaborative records. His last album was a blend of pop songs and his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra that soared to #1 on both the Billboard classical and classical crossover charts.

For over a decade he's performed with some of the world's greatest symphony orchestras, and currently serves as the first ever Artistic Advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center.

Folds released his first book - a collection of interrelated essays, anecdotes and lessons about art, life and music - in 2019, which debuted as a New York Times Best Seller, and is currently hosting a podcast series spinoff of his book entitled "Lightning Bugs: Conversations with Ben Folds." In addition to solo rock and orchestral touring, he's also developing a new unscripted tv series with Fred Rogers Productions, continues to appear in various film/tv guest starring roles, and is working on two new albums.

An avid photographer, Folds is also a member of the prestigious Sony Artisans of Imagery, has worked as an assignment photo editor for National Geographic, and was featured in a mini-documentary by the Kennedy Center's Digital Project on his photographic work.

An outspoken champion for arts education and music therapy funding in our nation's public schools, has served for over five years as an active member of the distinguished Artist Committee of Americans For The Arts (AFTA), and serves on the Board of AFTA's Arts Action Fund. He also served as Chairman of the Arts Action Fund's ArtsVote2020 national initiative that encouraged voter engagement in the 2020 US elections, and continually advocates for improving public policies for the arts and arts education.

  • Simply Amazing

Ben always gives the greatest concerts. I could see him over and over again. His music is great, his live presence is unbelievable for a guy who sits at a piano and plays, and he's so good at bringing the audience in, and getting them involved. Anyone who likes his music will agree that seeing him live is a true treat.

Been going to see Ben play for years and this was one of the best shows I've seen him do. Was a fun show, lots of older stuff with some new. Most of all, Ben looked like he had fun too.

He has to be the hardest working man in show biz!! The way he plays the piano is truly amazing!!! We loved it!!!!!!

  • Great Show!

Had so much fun at the Ben folds show.. can't say i was too impressed with the venue, but Ben was great! Such an entertainer..

  • Gotta love his stance - great show

by goldie007 on 4/7/10House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

This is my 2nd Ben Folds concert and as hoped he performed amazing. This was my first House of Blues experience and it was good except the the lack of viewing spots on the 2nd level. And the TV they had there to make up for it could seriously use an improvement in quality. Thankfully though Ben Folds is more about the sound and less about the stage so it wasn't hard to just forget about the visual and zone into the great riffs (but some zoomed in shots of his fingers player would have been stellar). All in all a great show, he played for an hour and half and seemingly never missed a note.

  • Ben's Best One!

by prudence1 on 4/7/10House of Blues Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

See him every chance I get. My favorite shows are him and the piano. I have to say last night's show blew me away. Took my hubby so he could finally see what all of my hype was about. He was screaming and taking part in 3 part harmony! Can't wait to see him again! And his opening act...whoah. Pretty amazing!

  • Ben Folds ROCKS.

by tnort on 4/6/10House of Blues Orlando - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

Ben Folds was absolutely brilliant and had everyone laughing through most of his show. His piano skills are incredible; I couldn't stop staring at his hands. My three friends who had never heard him before the show all loved him after and are huge fans. I definitely recommend going to see him! It was such a fun show!

  • Whole > Sum of its parts

by faucetsrunning on 3/30/10The Norva - NorfolkRating: 4 out of 5

For just a piano and its dorky but powerful player, Ben Folds--not for second did I question the fullness of just vocals, keys, and some makeshift percussion. He's got so much skill and personality that I didn't even notice there weren't any drums or guitar or synth. One trick he did pull out, though, was Chat Roulette, which was so funny and really shows off what a talented entertainer Ben Folds is. What I also like about Ben Folds and a Piano: the interactivity and sing-a-long aspects of the show! The Norva's already a small venue, but this show seemed Coffee House intimate. A great night!

  • Bewn Folds was amazing

by gingois on 3/29/10Progress Energy Center Meymandi Concert Hall - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

The show was unforgettable...the only reason I didnt give it five stars is that Ben's vocals were not completely clear...if you didn't know the lyrics you couldn't always decipher them....overall, though, the piano/orchestra levels were excellent....I greatly enjoyed it and will go again when possible...

  • A piano and Chatroulette!

by Grasso on 3/28/10The National - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

Ingenuity and talent...what more do you need? Absolutely the best live show I've ever been to! Even more fascinating than his talent is his use of the world around him! He connected to Chatroulette on his iBook and broadcast to the world his performance regardless of who, what, or where the Chatroulette video wheel stopped! BRILLIANT!

  • Ben Folds & the NC Symphony were a perfect match!

by alisonwonderland on 3/28/10Progress Energy Center Meymandi Concert Hall - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

This concert was amazing!! It started right on time, and I never wanted it to end. Ben Folds is such an excellent performer and musician - he really "worked" the crowd and involved us in a few of his songs. Also, the NC Symphony played so beautifully! Pairing his songs with their instrumental accompaniment was magic. My soul was stirred and I felt emotional listening to the lyrics of some of the more poignant songs from Ben Folds. And of course - the best part was the encore. The whole audience must have stood up clapping and cheering for 5 minutes to get Ben to come back to the stage - without any decrease in our clapping and cheering! It was such a reward when he came back out to finish up. I just loved this concert!

  • Love Ben Folds but......

by SeanAitken on 3/27/10Progress Energy Center Meymandi Concert Hall - RaleighRating: 3 out of 5

The performance was great, but I had the following complaints: - The sound was awful for the first half of the show - The show was WAYY to short (I play 4 hour gigs and am used to seeing 2+ hours of entertainment for a $60 ticket. This sub-2 hour performance was pathetic) - I couldn't find my seat, and I couldn't find an usher I'm a big fan of Ben Folds, and this is the most embarrassing performance I have seen. The orchestra was great, but I felt like I didn't get my moneys worth at the end of the show. The drinks were to $$ (no ATM convenient to the orchestra pit), and the sound stunk the first half of the show.

  • 1 word- AMAZING

by OlivesMama on 3/26/10Progress Energy Center Meymandi Concert Hall - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

I was on cloud nine after this concert. I think I had a smile on my face throughout the entire show. I've seen Ben Folds a few times before and this show was so different. The Symphony added another element to Ben's music. It was simply AMAZING!

  • Rockin' the Symphony

by DD82 on 3/26/10Progress Energy Center Meymandi Concert Hall - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

Overall I thought the concert was good. Having seen BF solo and with his band, it was cool to see him play and interact with the symphony. He and the conductor really seemed to have a great chemistry. He mentioned having worked with her before. Compared to other shows, he played more ballads than normal, I'm sure because they are suited for symphony arrangement. My final critique would be the overall sound level was low. You could actually whisper to someone beside you and be heard. Ben's piano got lost in the audio mix at times as well, but understandable with a full symphony playing behind him. Really enjoyed when he came back out after the symphony had finished. Nice touch to end on!

  • Ben Folds rocked the suburbs!

by Zlowie on 3/26/10Progress Energy Center Meymandi Concert Hall - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

The entire show was fantastic! This is the 3rd time I've seen Ben live, but the first with a full orchestra. It added an additional depth to his full-energy style of performance. Loved it!

  • A Different Ben Folds

by RandyM1 on 3/26/10Progress Energy Center Meymandi Concert Hall - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

I saw Ben Folds at Regency Park last year and looked forward to hearing him at Memorial Auditorium with a different sound. I knew that it was unlikely that he would play "Bitches Ain't Shit" because of the venue. I was treated to a different sound with the same rockin' energy with several hits like "Brick", "Army", and "One Angry Dwarf". He had as much energy with a symphony as he did with his rock band! In fact, there are songs that he played that sounded better with a symphony (like "Steven's Last Night In Town")! He had to keep the language upscale but let the audience do his dirty work! :-) It was amazing! Recommended for all Ben Folds Fans. Loved seeing him where he got his start, in NC!

  • Ben Folds, awesome

It was better than I thought it was going to be and I thought it was going to be awesome! great crwod partcipation and a great energy throughout. The orchestra was incredible and they did a great job accenting Ben's songs and adding a depth i didn't imagine possible. Truly stunning.
