About

Ben Folds is widely regarded as one of the major music influencers of our generation.

He's created an enormous body of genre-bending music that includes pop albums with Ben Folds Five, multiple solo albums, and numerous collaborative records. His last album was a blend of pop songs and his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra that soared to #1 on both the Billboard classical and classical crossover charts.

For over a decade he's performed with some of the world's greatest symphony orchestras, and currently serves as the first ever Artistic Advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center.

Folds released his first book - a collection of interrelated essays, anecdotes and lessons about art, life and music - in 2019, which debuted as a New York Times Best Seller, and is currently hosting a podcast series spinoff of his book entitled "Lightning Bugs: Conversations with Ben Folds." In addition to solo rock and orchestral touring, he's also developing a new unscripted tv series with Fred Rogers Productions, continues to appear in various film/tv guest starring roles, and is working on two new albums.

An avid photographer, Folds is also a member of the prestigious Sony Artisans of Imagery, has worked as an assignment photo editor for National Geographic, and was featured in a mini-documentary by the Kennedy Center's Digital Project on his photographic work.

An outspoken champion for arts education and music therapy funding in our nation's public schools, has served for over five years as an active member of the distinguished Artist Committee of Americans For The Arts (AFTA), and serves on the Board of AFTA's Arts Action Fund. He also served as Chairman of the Arts Action Fund's ArtsVote2020 national initiative that encouraged voter engagement in the 2020 US elections, and continually advocates for improving public policies for the arts and arts education.

  • Best Ben show I've seen

    by kaf376 on 4/12/10Hershey Theater - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

I've seen Ben Folds at a few other venues with a band, and this tops all of them. Hearing all of his songs showcased with just his piano was fantastic. What I also loved about this show was Ben talking between most of the songs, telling little stories or explaining where the songs came from. It was a more intimate show and much more personal. He played some new stuff, some Ben Folds Five stuff and a good variety of all of his songs. His opening act, Kate Miller-Heindke was fantastic; I can't wait to go buy her album. She brought a wonderful quirkiness to the show and had amazing vocals. Loved it! Can't wait to see Ben again!

  • Phenomenal!!!

A must see! I'll admit I hadn't kept up with Ben Folds since the 90s, but since the concert I've downloaded all of his newer albums on iTunes. He was just terrific! Very interactive, amazing performance. I'll definitely go again when he's back in town.

  • Amazing

by suco on 4/12/10Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

This show was everything I expected and a few things I didn't expect! Bringing a young girl on stage to help sing b****es ain't s**t was priceless. The intimate feel of just Ben and his piano was brilliant, and allowed for a lot of crowd interaction...which was great. A great mix of old and new songs. I could go on and on...but in the interest of time I will simply reiterate my original thought...amazing.

Do not miss this show !.! I was a little late in getting to know the music of Ben Folds, but he has been on heavy-rotation in my MP3 player for the last year - - Been dying for a chance to see him play live. Having seen him play solo, I can't even imagine him with a full band behind him...The guy is just flat-out one of the most talented musicians I have ever heard... Great entertainer as well - - Had great interaction with the crowd and put together a fantastic set list. Do not miss this show!.!

This was my first time seeing Ben Folds live and I was most impressed! His playing was spot on, he was great with the crowd, he played an awesome set. The venue was also really nice. His opening act, Kate Miller-Heidke, was another high point.

  • Leave the kids at home!

    by TR113 on 4/11/10Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 3 out of 5

There is no question that Ben is a highly talented musician and a fantastic performer; however, I felt bad for the parents who took their kids to the concert. The content was NOT appropriate for kids/teens. In fact, I was a bit surprised by all of the offensive language in the show. Overall, it was a fine show for adults. The opening act (Kate Miller Heidke) was exceptional!

  • Ben is the best!

Loved the concert and how personal he is with the audience. Ben Folds is truly one of the most talented musicians around!

Ben Folds is a sheer musical genius! He made sure that everyone had a great time by including multiple points for audience participation. I've seen him multiple times and this was by far one of my favorites!

  • Just fantastic

by Anonymous on 4/11/10Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

Nothing better than getting to see someone without all the other crap on the stage. Just Ben and the piano was amazing. The concert was fun, well paced and more than I could have hoped for.

  • Ben Folds is INCREDIBLE!

by mountainlioness on 4/11/10Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

This event was amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed the concert, EXCEPT for the opening act which was kind of awful. However, Ben Folds made up for it by being superb.

Ben never disappoints. He was incredible as always. I've seen him three times live and each time he is better and more enjoyable. Crowd participation is great. Songs for fans and for die-hards like me. Every time I can get to see him, I will do it.

The venue and Ben we just fabulous. He was energetic, engaging, and played for a long time. We loved seeing him in such a beautiful, comfortable setting.

  • An amazing show!!!

by chartgeek on 4/11/10Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

Having such a talented artist as Kate Miller-Heidke, virtually unknown here in the US, open for Ben Folds was just great. Her intelligent, comical and quirky songwriting and her beautiful and unique voice was a perfect appetizer for the show. I loved her so much that my partner and I had to each purchase her album during the intermission. This was the third time I had seen Ben Folds perform live. All three times were fantastic but I think this one was the best show yet. Opening with Free Coffee was a cute way to say hi. He touched upon every album, even going way back to play Jackson Cannery. The majority of songs were from 2001's Rockin' The Suburbs, which is my favorite album. Some highlights included his storytelling of the Bitches Ain't Shit controversy involving John Mayer's tour manager. Ben invited a woman from the audience to sing the second verse. Before the song started she sweetly said "Sorry, mom" and then cursed her butt off, singing and rapping the song. Fred Jones Part II was very bittersweet, considering I had been laid off from a magazine last summer. My partner and I truly loved The Luckiest. It has become a very personal song for us. His fans are the best. They know every lyric, every note, every hand clap. Being a part of the audience at Ben's shows are like being in a special club where everyone is there to hear the obscure songs and not necessarily the hits. And kudos to Ben for not doing Brick. I wish I had money to see every show. He is a fantastic and underrated performer who never disappoints. Keep on rockin', Ben!

Great concert, great opening act. Not just the music, but his stories were great too.

  • Good Show (Could have been better)

by McDizzle on 4/11/10Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 4 out of 5

This was my second time seeing Ben. I liked the feel of this show, but problems with the mix were distracting. There was a buzz in the low mic of the piano. The mid range of the piano was very quiet, so the main action and playing were distant sounding, not present. Also the mix was too quiet for the first 2/3 of the show, so no one wanted to sing or really engage with Ben & his songs. Once he got to a certain point, it got louder and more enjoyable.

Amazing show! Ben Folds is so talented and made it really fun and entertaining! Opening act was great too.

  • Ben folds is amazing

by springerlover on 4/11/10Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

Ben Folds is an amazing performer. He took many requests from the audience which is a rare thing but totally awesome. He played the cover of "Bitches ain't shit" and had an audience member come up and sing with him. You can tell that he truly loves performing even after all of these years.
