  • Bat For Lashes at The Crocodile 6/10/2009

by ScreamQueen on 7/14/09The Crocodile - SeattleRating: 4 out of 5

I arrived while Hecuba (the opener) was playing, a guy on a laptop with synths and a gal in a black unitard with silver diamonds all over it. They were playing electronic beats with vocals mainly by the gal in the unitard, but occasionally the guy would get up and sing. They were pretty wonderful. After they were done, I made my way up from behind through the breaks in the crowd. There were plastic cups everywhere and people carrying drinks through to their space in the crowd. When Bat For Lashes finally took the stage they were amazing. It was interesting to hear stripped down versions of their songs without all of the electronic background, although i do love it in their recorded versions since it certainly gives them an ethereal feel, but it was nice to hear them this way (differently) live. There was an obnoxious group of kids on the left side of the stage that kept screaming and yelling. they kind of ruined a few songs because they would not shut up. The crocodile was remodeled in the last year or two and it was my first time visiting with the new set up. I really prefer the old crocodile, which allowed for all ages shows since the bar/restaurant and performance area were separate, but in the new croc, everything was mashed together, which allow for stupid drunk people everywhere and plastic cups being left all over the floor. not my idea of a good show space. so, i am disappointed about the new crocodile and don't plan on going again unless someone is playing who i am in love with and unable to go see in portland the day after or before. but sans crocodile and the stupid yelling kids, i would say that bat for lashes was a good show, not as fun as when they toured for their first album, for they wore more elaborate costumes and such, but stellar none the less.

  • small and intimate

I've heard a lot of hype about the reopening of the Crocodile, so I was really interested in going to see what it was like. Lucky me, Bat for Lashes was playing, one of my favorite artists, and I had to go. And I LOVED it. Not only is she and her band terrific performers, but the Crocodile was small enough that no matter where you were standing you can still see everything. It was a really intimate concert, I didn't feel completely lost in the crowd. I really wish Natasha was a little more interactive with the crowd, she didn't say much, but she's still amazing. There were a couple of reasons why this concert lost a star, the first being that the opening act sucked. I don't even remember who it was, but they sang 3 songs that didn't stand out at all, and they didn't even play their own music, it was a girl singing and a guy sitting next to her with his laptop, and there was a stretch of time when they couldn't get their music playing. So that was a downer. But the biggest downer of the night was some of the fans around me. They were SO obnoxious. This one guy in particular was taking up a lot of space on the floor just dancing around and bumping into people, and he was trying to get a bunch of girls dancing with him, but for obvious reasons they rejected him. At the end of every song he kept chanting "Bat" over and over again loud enough for people on the other side of the place to hear. I mean, I loved his enthusiasm, but he needs to see his doctor to refill his chill pills. Overall: I would definitely want to see Bat for Lashes again, Nastasha Khan is an excellent performer and her band blew me away. And the intimacy of the Crocodile definitely makes me want to see more concerts there.

  • Brilliant!

I brought four friends, and none had heard of BFL.. All left enchanted and complete fans. Just a sublime evening. We already have tickets to see them again in August. FAVORITE MOMENT: As a drummer, I was fortunate enough to be right in front of Sarah. That and the smile that Natasha gave me were the highlights of an already brilliant set.

  • Bat for Lashes was awesome / Croc crowd sucked

    by rad22 on 7/14/09The Crocodile - SeattleRating: 4 out of 5

Love the act, love the venue - but the crowd almost ruined this show for me. Bat for Lashes was even better live than albums - Natasha's dancing, seeing the different instruments used, the drums live, were all amazing. The new Crocodile looks great and is a better layout than before. The crowd of mostly 20-somethings didn't even maintain basic concert/show ettiquette - shouting out drunkenly during slow songs, dancing wildly in the middle of the crowd and bumping into people (save it for the mosh up front or on the sidelines, people), talking during the whole performance. I kinda want Bats to get more popular and play larger, more expensive venues just to weed out some of the yahoos that aren't really there to watch & listen.

Very moving, very beautiful. Their live show was so much better than their last album.
