Ballet Hispanico in Dona Peron

A portrait of power: Dona Peron brings Evita's emotional story to life.

Performed by New York-based Ballet Hispanico and with live music, Dona Peron has delighted audiences across North America since its 2022 premiere.

Alberta Ballet is pleased to welcome guest company Ballet Hispanico in Dona Peron, a complex and moving portrait of Eva "Evita" Peron, Argentina's most controversial first lady.

The extremes of power - working class struggle versus high-class opulence - are at play throughout Evita's life story. Having risen from a shameful past as a dancehall girl to become an influential political figure, she is best known for her activism, championing rights for descamidsados ("the shirtless ones" or working-class laborers).

Choreographer Annebelle Lopez Ochoa (also the choreographer of Alberta Ballet's BOTERO from the 22-23 season) offers new voice to the complex story of a beloved and controversial icon and beautifully infuses ballet with tango in a stunning contemporary work.

"She's not a fairytale character, she's not a literary character. She's a real woman, and for me, it's interesting to put her on stage because she's difficult to pin point. I want to give female dancers real roles, not always the nice roles."

Choreographer: Annabelle Lopez Ochoa

Artistic collaborator: Nancy Meckler

Music: Peter Salem

Lighting, set & video design: Christopher Ash

    GO SEE THEM!!!

by Jazzyfaith on 11/26/13Apollo Theater - New York

My first visit was EPIC! I went Alvin Ailey last year and was underwhelmed so I was skeptical. I'm happy to say I was pleasantly surprised and I am still talking about the show I saw days ago! It left me inspired!!

Modern ballet: Yes Hispanico: Not so much

by Karl42 on 11/19/13Indiana University Auditorium - Bloomington

While the technical performance of the dancers was excellent, and sure to please fans of modern dance (especially modern ballet), we were expecting to see more of the Hispanic influence. My wife and mother-in-law in particular (both originally from South America themselves) commented that there wasn't enough color and the dances were too dark and negative in nature for what they would have expected to reflect a Hispanic / Latino cultural flair. It was enjoyable for the artistry of what they performed, but did not reflect what we had been anticipating based on our understanding of what Ballet Hispanico is all about.

The dancers were very good, the choregraphies were also very good and original. The mixing between classical and latin style is great. I would go back to see them.

    Another phenomenal performance

by syps on 12/3/12Apollo Theater - New York

We've been fans of Ballet Hispanico for many years. Each performance, each year, BH seems to be getting better, as if there was room for improvement. This one took a major leap. The initial piece, inspired by the tango, was superbly choreographed and executed. The second, inspired by Spain's post-Franco youth movement, was stunning. Both the choreagrapher's expertise and each dancer's talents made this one of the most impressionable performances we've seen. Paquito D'Rivera was phenomenal - and the troupe followed two strong pieces with yet another which was dazzling.

    Ballet Hispanico was nice

by Maris16 on 12/20/11Apollo Theater - New York

I had read that the intermissions where too long and I have to agree. The first performance was 15 minutes and then an intermission. The first intermission was 20 minutes and then the following performance was about 20 minutes and then another intermission that was 20 minutes and then the final performance which was about 20 minutes. The dancers probably danced a total of an hour? The show started at 2:10 and ended at 3;50, so I felt that the actual performances could have been longer. The performance was nice. I expected more of a dynamic performance and it wasn't like wow! Wish the performances were longer and more exciting.
