Ballet Hispanico in Dona Peron
A portrait of power: Dona Peron brings Evita's emotional story to life.
Performed by New York-based Ballet Hispanico and with live music, Dona Peron has delighted audiences across North America since its 2022 premiere.
Alberta Ballet is pleased to welcome guest company Ballet Hispanico in Dona Peron, a complex and moving portrait of Eva "Evita" Peron, Argentina's most controversial first lady.
The extremes of power - working class struggle versus high-class opulence - are at play throughout Evita's life story. Having risen from a shameful past as a dancehall girl to become an influential political figure, she is best known for her activism, championing rights for descamidsados ("the shirtless ones" or working-class laborers).
Choreographer Annebelle Lopez Ochoa (also the choreographer of Alberta Ballet's BOTERO from the 22-23 season) offers new voice to the complex story of a beloved and controversial icon and beautifully infuses ballet with tango in a stunning contemporary work.
"She's not a fairytale character, she's not a literary character. She's a real woman, and for me, it's interesting to put her on stage because she's difficult to pin point. I want to give female dancers real roles, not always the nice roles."
Choreographer: Annabelle Lopez Ochoa
Artistic collaborator: Nancy Meckler
Music: Peter Salem
Lighting, set & video design: Christopher Ash
this was an amazing and absolutely beautiful show. the dances were stunning. can't wait to see more from Ballet Hispanico
This company is superb - the best performance I’ve seen in years!
Ballet Hispànico knows how to put on a show. Everything about the evening was spectacular. The work that they do is cutting-edge and fresh, I haven’t stopped talking about it since I saw it.
Dancers were excellent. Show was late getting started and intermissions too long
BH never ceases to amaze, excite and overwhelm the senses with it's brilliant choreography, superb costumes and the beauty and exuberance of its dancers who seem to get more fabulous each time. Bravo.
Excellent show would definitely see again. Would recommend to everyone.
Ballet Hispanico is GREAT!!!! The dancing was incredible. Power., prescision grace and fun. Thank you for a fantastic performance.
The program was diverse, the costumes beautiful and the dancers amazing. Incredible musicality and energy: they made the impossibly exhausting look exhilarating !
I missed the show. From what I hear, I was lucky. Renowned for extraordinary dance, yet there was no dance and nothing that invoked the passion of dance that this group normally does.
This dance group is absolutely thrilling-confident-poised -energetic-sexy-fun Tour-de-force . Loved every piece they performed also a major extra bonus was the director coming out and explaining each piece before it was performed ,he along with a beautiful lady full of energy were a great addition ( very entertaining)to the already excellent dance group
It was very abstract , no dancing, at times depressing
Smoke and mirrors! The use of special effects and the dramatic juxtaposition of European (tense, a rhythmic and disharmonious) with Brazilian musics (magical and organic) reinforce the message of the protagonists journey from the harsh, mechanical, ritualistic life patterns to human-ness through his sympathetic rhythmic alignment with others.
This was my first Ballet Hispanico show and I'd been looking forward to it for months but I was sorely disappointed. If I had expected a modern dance peace, I guess this would have been ok. I expected something that incorporated ballet, Latin dancing, and Brazilian dancing given the guest choreographer but no, it was a mundane dull sleep-inducing "performance" (my friend was literally falling asleep). There was absolutely nothing Latin or ballet-like about it, and I would barely call it dance. It was like some kind of avant garde theater piece. There was some creative light effect but the choregraphy was awful. It was like a bad repetitive aggravating dream. I felt bad for the dancers that they had to learn this intricate but piece that was not aesthetically pleasing at all, and we could not figure out the "message" if there was one. I wanted to see the dancers actually DANCE because I know this piece wasn't letting them move to their full potential. I wanted it to end after the first 20 minutes but it was 90 minutes total and I was sitting in the middle so couldn't leave early. The Apollo Theater was gorgeous and I'm sad this terrible performance was my first.
This particular show did not live up to the technical difficulty and beautiful rhythmic performance I have come to expect from Ballet Hispanico. Some positives: it was experimental and abstract. The set includes a large mirror wall, which was used with some light to show a parallel scene occurring behind it. Very cool. However, it was too experimental and abstract, and the creative mirror wall trick got old as the show consisted of the same five sets of choreography, done over and over again, with a few changes. The scenes were done in front of the mirror, then behind the mirror, then back in front of the mirror, then one dance scene done with one inanimate object, then another inanimate object. If the best parts of the show were condensed to 10-15 minutes, it would be way more powerful and effective. There's not enough substance for a 90 minute show.
Loved the choreography set to the music of Carmen!
I had not anticipated the amazing combination of grace and athleticism of this production. It was my first time to see Ballet Hispanico. The dancers were outstanding, the costumes beautiful, the sets dramatic in their simplicity; the entire production was sensual and enlightening.
Loved the space, the staff, so welcoming, so warm and the performance, TOPS.
I go to Ballet Hispanico for Latin themed and Latin music ballet Only one ballet fit that description I go to other ballet at Joyce and New York Ballet so was disappointed in this program
This is the 3rd time I have seen this company perform within the last 3 months and I could see them again tomorrow. The dancers entrance their audience with their grace, artistry and technical skill. I am inspired by such beauty!
Liquid Light. Stars were born at the Apollo that night. Dancers and Choreographers and Composers, Musicians and Designers all working together at the cutting edge of human capacity. Ballet Hispanico makes you proud just to be alive in their presence.
