Ballet Hispanico in Dona Peron

A portrait of power: Dona Peron brings Evita's emotional story to life.

Performed by New York-based Ballet Hispanico and with live music, Dona Peron has delighted audiences across North America since its 2022 premiere.

Alberta Ballet is pleased to welcome guest company Ballet Hispanico in Dona Peron, a complex and moving portrait of Eva "Evita" Peron, Argentina's most controversial first lady.

The extremes of power - working class struggle versus high-class opulence - are at play throughout Evita's life story. Having risen from a shameful past as a dancehall girl to become an influential political figure, she is best known for her activism, championing rights for descamidsados ("the shirtless ones" or working-class laborers).

Choreographer Annebelle Lopez Ochoa (also the choreographer of Alberta Ballet's BOTERO from the 22-23 season) offers new voice to the complex story of a beloved and controversial icon and beautifully infuses ballet with tango in a stunning contemporary work.

"She's not a fairytale character, she's not a literary character. She's a real woman, and for me, it's interesting to put her on stage because she's difficult to pin point. I want to give female dancers real roles, not always the nice roles."

Choreographer: Annabelle Lopez Ochoa

Artistic collaborator: Nancy Meckler

Music: Peter Salem

Lighting, set & video design: Christopher Ash

    Ballet Hispanico, Puro Sabor!

by Cocolo36 on 7/14/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

Modern dance may be incomprehensible and abstract for the general public for a variety of reasons. Happily, none of which apply to Ballet Hispanico. The show was thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. The company played on familiar themes without falling into cliche. The show was well balanced and executed, with stunningly original choreography and passionate, spirited performances that one would expect from a show billing itself as "Hispanico." A joy for all dancers and dance lovers. I will definitely attend their next show. This would also be a spectacular first date.

BH: Incredibly delightful to the heart!

by Cocci on 7/14/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

Ballet Hispanico's superb performance showed an enormous strength in technique, skill, creativity and rhythmic spirit. Every dance piece displayed perfection and professionalism. The finale confirms the dancers' high level of consistency in movement, artistry, excitement, and innovativeness. Very festive and convincingly beautiful! It's worth traversing the heavy traffic of LA. Highly recommendable!

Ballet Hispanico - The sexiest 2 hours around!

by Tarangster on 7/14/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

From beginning to end, just amazing. Low lights and cigars over drums and horns, to bright lights, big bold colors, and beautifully executed, sensual dance acts.

    Ballet Hispanico was terrrific!

by orientaldoc on 7/14/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

The dancing in Ballet Hispanico was wonderful - athletic, musical, interesting, and alot of other great adjectives. I had never heard of the Ballet until I read an L.A. Times article and I am so glad that we went. I hope they come back to town soon.

    Ballet Hispanico was so amazing!!

by miab1 on 7/14/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

As a dancer, I was in awe of the strength and grace of the performers. My boyfriend went to the ballet to make me happy, but by the end of the performance, he was on his feet, clapping , cheering, and laughing! We had the best time, this is a very important company to support, as members of the latino community, and to enjoy! Very unique program, fun for everyone, supersexy, high energy, not what you'd expect from a ballet, but everything anyone could want in a dance performance!

Not worth the price of the ticket!

by Electiongrrrl on 7/14/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

It pains me to say it as a person of Hispanic ethnicity, but this production was awful. From the smoky first dance to the yawn-able finale, there was nothing to be had. The taped music was bad, the costumes were pitiful, and the dance itself was mired in mistakes and lacked any kind of artistic congruence. The whole thing looked more like a dress rehearsal from a dance school than a premier dance troupe on opening night at the Ahmanson Theatre! I searched for some redeeming quality to justify the money I spent on orchestra seats, but couldn't come up with anything.
