Ballet Hispanico in Dona Peron

A portrait of power: Dona Peron brings Evita's emotional story to life.

Performed by New York-based Ballet Hispanico and with live music, Dona Peron has delighted audiences across North America since its 2022 premiere.

Alberta Ballet is pleased to welcome guest company Ballet Hispanico in Dona Peron, a complex and moving portrait of Eva "Evita" Peron, Argentina's most controversial first lady.

The extremes of power - working class struggle versus high-class opulence - are at play throughout Evita's life story. Having risen from a shameful past as a dancehall girl to become an influential political figure, she is best known for her activism, championing rights for descamidsados ("the shirtless ones" or working-class laborers).

Choreographer Annebelle Lopez Ochoa (also the choreographer of Alberta Ballet's BOTERO from the 22-23 season) offers new voice to the complex story of a beloved and controversial icon and beautifully infuses ballet with tango in a stunning contemporary work.

"She's not a fairytale character, she's not a literary character. She's a real woman, and for me, it's interesting to put her on stage because she's difficult to pin point. I want to give female dancers real roles, not always the nice roles."

Choreographer: Annabelle Lopez Ochoa

Artistic collaborator: Nancy Meckler

Music: Peter Salem

Lighting, set & video design: Christopher Ash

It was WONDERFUL The live Afro-Latin Band added a marvelous quality to the dance performance. I was dancing in my seat with the dancers. THE COMBINATION OF DANCE AND LIVE MUSIC WAS FABULOUS.

    Off sync, needs more practice

by KFoo on 12/19/11Apollo Theater - New York

The ballet hispanico chose 3 acts that all have wonderful music. Unfortunately, as talented as the dancers are the work just wasn't in sync. The timing felt off, like watching a high school regional cheerleader championship fall apart right before your eyes. It didn't have the fluid feel one expects from a ballet. The music was great, but the dancing needed more work.

    Stupendous!

by MissKKT on 12/19/11Apollo Theater - New York

This evening of dance and music was amazing! The "Tito on Timables" piece captured the drive and energy of Tito Puente's music in the most precise and lyrical way. "Asukar" was a complex and fitting tribute, reflecting the power and the complexity of Celia Cruz's rise to international fame and showcased wonderful selections of historical voices as well as hers. It was a tremendous evening. I truly hope that these pieces will be part of Ballet Hispanico's main repetoire, and that we see more of them with the incomparable Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro-Latino Jazz Orchestra. SO wish that it was more than one night!

Asuka at Ballet Hispanico's Concert is stunning

by CRGonzalez on 12/19/11Apollo Theater - New York

Ballet Hispanico at the Apollo Theater on December 17 was simply amazing. The company presented three pieces, but the one that blew me away was Eduardo Vilaro's Asuka. From beginning to end the piece was mesmerizing with innovative, engaging movement, inventive choreography, smart costumes and spectacular lighting. The work used all the company members who were stellar and looked like they were having a great time. The score was a series of songs by the iconic Celia Cruz and each section was a joy. I have not been this excited about the company in years. The other pieces Club Havana, was just cheesy fun and the first piece, Tito on Timbales, almost seemed like a Ballet Hispanico Museum piece. I say a museum piece for two reasons because it is almost thirty years old, and it seemed like past works where thier Latinidad was forced. The costumes were muted colors, but looked elegant on the women and unflattering on the men. The dancers were consistently wonderful, regardless of the work, but if Asuka by Ballet Hispanico's new Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro is an indication of the company's future, then that future is bright.

    Ballet Hispanico: Magnifico!

by DrVega on 12/19/11Apollo Theater - New York

What an incredible display of dance! The ensemble was right on! My body was moving throughout each piece. And the live music supplied by Arturo O'Farrill and orchestra- wow! It gave me goose bumps. I remembered back to last December when I saw him and his sons perform in Havana, Cuba. Wow- again!

The music was excellent, but the choreography for the show was very forgettable, even though the dancers were very skilled.

It was one of the best shows I have seen in a long time. The Ballet was Fantastic. Arturo we have been to many times - the band brought a sense of family and closeness to the show. People were feeling friendly and festive from the fun that was going on - on stage. We have since bought tickets for friends of ours and family members as Christmas presents. Thank you for a wonderful Sat. afternoon in NYC.

    Ballet Hispanico

I did enjoy Ballet Hispanico. I thought the dancers were extremely accomplished and the venue varied. I felt the two and a half intermissions were a tad too long though.

    Ballet Hispanico was beautiful!

by Dancer1396 on 10/23/09University At Buffalo Center for the Arts - Buffalo

My daughter and I always enjoy the experience of different dance productions, ( she is a dancer). We thought the first act was very energetic and the costumes were gorgeous & very dramatic. The second act left us just a little confused with the spotlight directed into the audience, and the stage itself relatively dark,( we could not see much of what was happening). The third act was very well presented and gave us a bit of insight into the individual personalities of the dancers themselves-vey well done!

    Excellent and Entertaining Performance

by Alva on 7/15/09Ahmanson Theatre - Los Angeles

My family and I really enjoyed an afternoon performance. The music was perfect and the performers were very talented. The entire show seemed a bit short due to the extended intermissions. Nonetheless, we would see it again and would recommend it to our family and friends.
