  • Totally Unique Experience

    by Het261 on 6/2/13Desert Botanical Garden - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

The food tent offered fabulous choices and the restrooms were elegant! We have never attended an outdoor ballet before and it was absolutely delightful. The lighting on the hills and plants in the background was superb. The length of the program was just right.. not too long, not too short. A real treat.

this was the SHORTEST ballet that I have ever experienced. money charged was too much for what I experienced. NOT next year or any year. seating at the table was a rip-off..if any one goes, they should just get the general admission bleachers..better viewing by 200%

  • Topia at Desert Botanical Gardesn

by Cailey on 6/1/13Desert Botanical Garden - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

This was a beautiful show against a stunning backdrop of the desert and Papago Buttes. The show is not very long though. I would have loved for it to go on all night. Be aware that if you buy seats at a table, you might not get the seat you reserved. When we arrived the two others at our table had taken our seats and no one seemed to know seats were reserved.

  • Stunning!

by Grengie on 6/1/13Desert Botanical Garden - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

Topia was a wonderful experience start to finish. The lighting was dynamic and transformative. Bravo to the dancers, they were lovely.

  • Topia was surperb!

by shpar on 6/1/13Desert Botanical Garden - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

The sight of the fabulous dancers against the backdrop of the Desert Botanical Gardens was just wonderful. My only complaint was that it was too short. The whole ballet was just an hour. I was so enthralled that I was ready for a short intermission and to come back for more. I know the piece was choreographed to Beethoven's Symphony No 6, so obviously when that ended the ballet ended. The bottom line is that I really enjoyed it and I hope Ballet Arizona continues a relationship with the botanical gardens.

I was expecting a beautiful performance and that is exactly what I got.

  • Topia was terrific

    by TEECEE04 on 6/1/13Desert Botanical Garden - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Beautiful evening and very good food, The dancing was wonderful and the lighting was spectacular. A nice breeze made the lit trees dance along with the ballet company. We're looking forward to next year.

  • TOPIA

by PrescottGrammy on 5/31/13Desert Botanical Garden - PhoenixRating: 4 out of 5

TOPIA was a great show! I took my granddaughter who is turning 13 to celebrate her birthday. We had a fabulous time. However, I believe that sitting in the "general" seating up in the stands w/ the same chairs that are at the tables would be better seating. There is so much going on at once on stage that sitting up higher (we were at ground level, second row) would give you a better view of the entire show. Next time we attend a show, this is where we will sit. Beautiful performance, thanks!

  • Topia

The dancers demonstrated incredible physical agility . The natural setting of the Papago Mts., and desert foliage against colored lights was magnificent. I was a bit disappointed it was only one hour long. My husband would have liked a written interpretation of the what the dancers were portraying. Overall, a memorable evening.

  • Topia Not Worth It

by BoredwithTOPIA on 5/28/13Desert Botanical Garden - PhoenixRating: 1 out of 5

We were disappointed from the moment we entered the Desert Botanical Gardens and were told where to go for the performance. Despite much promotional material that makes you think it is in the gardens, it isn't! It's in the parking lot. Very deceptive advertising. When you call in to the box you are told there is table service. Not so, instead you wait in separate lines for wine and catered food. The food wasn't even from Gertrude's! The name "Topia" suggests a nature-related performance; instead, you get a series of forgettable vignettes with no theme at all. The dancers' heights were mismatched and there was an overweight one to boot. The final straw was the windblown dust in the eyes! Not at all worth the money spent for a tableside performance.

This is a simply lovely and powerful display of technique and beauty. It was beautiful in it's simplicity and the setting was sublime.

Topia was spectacular ... one of the highlights of the year. The unique setting of the Botanical Garden and the beautiful choreography combine to create a one-of-a-kind experience. Not to be missed!!

Very Beautiful Ballet with amazingly talented performers. A wonderful setting and a perfect night for the show. Loved it.

  • Topia was tremendous!

    by azmom2013 on 5/27/13Desert Botanical Garden - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Desert Botanical Gardens set the stage as the backdrop was magical on Friday night when we attended Topia on a beautiful full moon. The ballet dancers were exquisite at the hands of Ib Andersen and music by Beethoven Symphony No. 6 - The Pastoral. Honestly stop procastinating and get out there and expereince first hand some beautiful artistic dance. It's good for your mind, body and soul to take yourself out of your comfort zone sometimes and do something you've thought about doing for a long time, but just never got around to buying the tickets. Loved, loved this entire idea of ballet under the stars/moon and th 55 minute performance. (We too were late buying the tickets and picked them up at Will Call.)

  • Topia is fresh ballet

by Anonymous on 5/27/13Desert Botanical Garden - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

Ballet seems fresh again with a program unique to Phoenix. Set to Beethoven 's 6th Symphony with world-class dancers of Ballet Arizona on a giant stage with desert background painted with dramatic lighting, My only disappointment is the limited food choices when it could be more like the picnic experience at the Hollywood Bowl.

Topia was a phenomenal reminder of what this community has to offer in terms of talent and theatrical imagination, in particular when one looks at how our local environment was used as an accent to the talent. BRAVO!!

  • Topia was amazing!

by Anyabird on 5/27/13Desert Botanical Garden - PhoenixRating: 5 out of 5

We went to Topia last year and enjoyed it so much we had to go again this year. We hope it is an annual event. The performance was flawless and the backdrop dramatic. There really is nothing like it.

  • boring

by cottar on 5/26/13Desert Botanical Garden - PhoenixRating: 1 out of 5

Show was not in the botanical garden but in the parking lot area. With title of topia I had expected a botanical theme. There did not appear tiobe any theme. Choreography was uninteresting and repetitive. Some was downright akward looking. Costume was nude leotards and there were no changes. Dancers worked hard but unison was poor and technique not great. Sorry but I was embarrassed I took my friend to it. Good thing show was less than an hour.
