Atlanta United FC History

Atlanta United has gone from being one of the newest teams in Major League Soccer to its most supported. Since it joined the league in 2017, the club has led MLS in attendance each year and owns over half of the Top 10 most attended matches in MLS history. Awarded a franchise on April 16, 2014, Atlanta United is owned by Arthur M. Blank and led by club President Darren Eales. The club's opening season in 2017 coincided with the opening of Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Originally managed by Gerardo "Tata" Martino, who led the national teams of Paraguay and Argentina, as well as FC Barcelona, before joining Atlanta in 2016, Atlanta United made the postseason in each of its first two seasons and won the 2018 MLS Cup. After winning the title, Martino took the Mexico National Team job, but left MLS with the highest winning percentage (.647) by a head coach in league history. The club then hired Frank de Boer, who led the club to two trophies: the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the 2019 Campeones Cup, the latter of which Atlanta United became the first MLS club to win after it defeated Mexico's Club América.

In August 2021, Atlanta United announced Gonzalo Pineda as its new head coach. Pineda came from Seattle Sounders FC where he was a member of the coaching staff for five seasons. Under Pineda, Atlanta has qualified for the playoffs twice, in 2021 and 2023.

Atlanta United FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium

Atlanta United competes at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which opened in 2017. Mercedes-Benz Stadium hosted the MLS Cup in 2018, Super Bowl LIII in 2019, the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship game, the 2018 MLS All-Star Game and is also the home stadium of the NFL's Atlanta Falcons, the SEC Football Championship, the Peach Bowl and the Celebration Bowl.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium has retractable seating in order to accommodate an MLS pitch as well as a retractable roof. The stadium can seat 42,500 fans for most MLS matches and can expand to 72,000 for playoff matches and other important games. The club broke the record for the highest-attended single game in MLS history seven times in its first two seasons and currently owns eight of the Top 10 most attended regular season matches in MLS history. A standing-room-only crowd of 73,019 packed Mercedes-Benz Stadium on December 8, 2018, when Atlanta beat the Portland Timbers, 2-0, to win the MLS Cup, giving the city its first major sports championship since the MLB’s Atlanta Braves won the 1995 World Series.

Atl Utd fans are the best

by Anonymous on 3/21/17Bobby Dodd Stadium - Atlanta

Two things. 1) Atl Utd is a very exciting team to watch. They are a creative high pressure team that like scoring goals. 2) Atlanta fans are incredible. I don't think there was a single fan that actually utilized their seat.

    Slow Game Entry

by GTSoccerFan on 3/14/17Bobby Dodd Stadium - Atlanta

I have been to a number of Georgia Tech football games including sold out crowds, and this was the worst I have ever seen the lines. It was ridiculously slow getting into the stadium. We arrived 30 minutes early and only saw the start of the game because it started after 7:30. Must be more organized and faster.

    Amazing atmosphere

by Srekcan on 3/13/17Bobby Dodd - Atlanta

Bobby Dodd had some issues with lines, but there's only so much that venue could do with that amount of people. Upcoming matches won't be able to hold as many folks, and eventually it'll move to the new dome. Bottom line is the game atmosphere is unlike anything else in the city. Incredibly fun team to watch!

Getting in and around the GT stadium was impossible. No crowd control and lines that never ended. I won't attend another ATL UTD game here.

Awesome atmosphere for Atl United game

by PeteP99 on 3/9/17Bobby Dodd Stadium - Atlanta

Enjoyed going to the first game. Fun, upbeat atmosphere around the stadium and midtown around tech Square. I did not worry or complain about the large crowd and limited resources at the concession stands. I was there for the game and can wait for new stadium for the bells and whistles. I will probably go back to games at GT and it is fun being on campus

    ATLUTD History- Inaugural Match

by MLouT on 3/8/17Bobby Dodd Stadium - Atlanta

There are no words to describe the pure joy I experienced at this event. I waited my entire life to have an MLS home team to support and I am more than pleased. The event at Bobby Dodd was magical. I will always remember it.

    Good game, great atmosphere

by COYS1 on 3/8/17Bobby Dodd Stadium - Atlanta

The traffic and parking situation was absolute crap. Living in Cobb we figured 2 hrs would be enough to get downtown (30 min drive) find parking and make it into the stadium. We missed the entire first half of the game sitting in traffic at North Ave and trying to find a place to park. I recommend either parking at the Varsity and hoofing it across the overpass, or give yourself 3+ hours to get downtown, find parking and get to your seats. It took us 20 mins to walk across campus. Ended up being a fun but expensive 45 mins of soccer.

Incredible atmosphere, slightly manic getting into the ground, no doubt to people arriving later than you would expect for a college game..... don't forget this is football and as fans this is what we do :-) Really impressed how well behaved everyone was and the patience shown by both the police and security people - kudos you guys!! Football (soccer!) is here to stay fellow Atlantan's!!

    Atlanta United is Atlanta's club

by AtlantanKnight7 on 3/8/17Bobby Dodd Stadium - Atlanta

I loved every moment. The crowd was raucous and lively. The team played really well. The only thing which would have made it all any more perfect would have been a win.
