Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Live

Since its birth in the late 1930s, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has earned its place as one of the most renowned orchestras in the nation. With over 150 live shows annually, each performance delivers depth and mastery brought forth by the ASO's renowned Maestros and award-winning guest artists. The 2022-2023 season marks the 78th for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and guests can expect a historic and exciting year for classical music in Atlanta. In 2022, the Symphony welcomed its fifth-ever Music Director, Nathalie Stutzmann. Described as "a consummate rock star on the podium" by ArtsATL, Maestro Stutzmann is expected to usher in a new era of musical culture for the ASO and Atlanta as a whole. Stutzmann began her first season featuring 13 living composers, including Hilary Purrington, Tyshawn Sorey and Joel Thompson. In her first season, Stutzmann is also leading eight programs featuring the classical masters, including Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony," Brahms' "Third Symphony" and a two-week Bach celebration culminating in Bach's "St. Matthew Passion." For fans of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's returning and pop culture series, you won't want to miss highlights like the hit program Star Wars and More: The Music of John Williams or performances of Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy soundtrack with a unique HD video multimedia experience.

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Concert

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra was originally founded by Anne Grace O'Callaghan in 1939 as the In-and-About High School Atlanta Symphony. As Supervisor of Music for Atlanta high schools, O'Callaghan started the passion project by recruiting the best high school players across the region. By 1943, Chicago Conductor Henry Sopkin had joined the ranks to lead the young musicians. The talented group's performances quickly drew the interest of patrons and investors, and by 1945 the Atlanta Music Club had offered Sopkin an eight-month contract to develop the Atlanta Youth Symphony. Finally, in 1947, the Youth Symphony dropped the "Youth" moniker and played their first concert as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra -- the start of decades to come as a world-renowned institution of classical music. Since then, ASO has traveled nationwide and internationally, been hosted by U.S. Presidents and won 27 Grammy Awards as of 2022 in Best Classical Album, Best Orchestral Performance, Best Choral Performance, and Best Opera Performance categories.

  • Drink Up Me Hearties Yo Ho!

The ASO performance of the classic soundtrack for “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” was simply incredible! Symphony Hall is an acoustically brilliant venue for any live musical performance and it was spectacular for delivery of this magnificent score! The Hall was sold out and the long standing ovation at the end of the film didn’t even begin to convey the extreme enjoyment and gratitude that the entire audience was attempting to convey back to the ASO. We cannot wait for the upcoming performance in March 2026 of the next film in the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

  • A Great First Experience with the ASO

by Mike S on 3/18/25Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

We wanted a unique way to enjoy your first time at the Symphony and thought the ASO accompanying a movie we love would be a great way. And, boy did they knock it out of the park! The whole experience was top notch from the ease of getting to and into the Woodruff Arts Center (considering it was right where the Saint Patrick's Day Parade had just stepped off hours earlier to grabbing a beverage before the show to finding out seats. Everyone working and volunteering there was friendly and engaging. The Pirates of the Caribbean movie is a fun, engaging and enjoyable movie made even more so by the accompaniment of the ASO. The musicians were accompanied by a choral group to add to the score. Each part adding to the enjoyment of the whole show. You sometime forgot you were even listening to live music, instead thinking you were hearing it through the best possible sound system out there. At other points, I'd find myself mesmerized watching the musicians and the conductor enjoying themselves performing during the more exciting and lively points in the movie. We will definitely do this again and look forward to our next trip to the Symphony!

by Listening Heart on 3/18/25Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

This experience sits very close to my heart as my late father use to love to attend Atlanta Symphony Orchestra events. This is a beautiful twist and I also throughly enjoy. I have several more tickets that I have purchased to attend many more events.

  • Pirates of the Caribbean

It was one of the best symphonies we had seen. Would love to see other Pirates of the Caribbean.

  • ASO Movies are one of my favorite things!

by brandicd on 3/17/25Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Truly incredible - every movie I've seen at the ASO. Highly recommend!

  • Fun but could use some tweaks

by BF on 3/17/25Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

The orchestra was flawless. My only issue was that the subtitles on the screen were VERY distracting. There should not be subtitles at all, as it detracts from the experience. Trying to watch and listen the movie, read the subtitles, and watch the orchestra was way too much. Subtitles need to go.

  • Great show

It was our first time to the Atlanta Symphony. Quite a good group, and seemed to feed off each other's energy quite well.

It was our first time to see the ATL Symphony and it was a great evening. The musicians, led by David Coucheron, were terrific and really made the pieces come alive. The venue was also really nice, creating an intimate setting that made you feel like you were close to the artists. i would highly recommend attending their next concert!

  • Masterful performance!

by ASO Dad on 2/25/25Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

I always love ASO concerts! They never disappoint and this performance was certainly no exception. I especially loved that the featured soloist took a moment to share some personal anecdotes with the audience before his encore. It was so wonderful to attend such an intimate performance of a truly world-class orchestra.

  • A great date night!

by BP on 2/23/25Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

This event was such a fun time! The featured cellist was beyond incredible. It was so refreshing to listen to live classical music. Something about the whole experience felt important in these troubling times. Being roughly 90 minutes of music was also the perfect run time, in my opinion!

  • A Fantastic Concert

by Bob on 2/18/25Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

The Atlanta Symphony is a world-class orchestra. We have been subscribers since the mid 1990's and enjoyed their music. The musicians are excellent. Even though a few modern compositions are weird and difficult to understand, they are played well. We had an energetic conductor for this Saturday who interpreted both Jean Sibelius' Symphony #1 and William Walton's Belshazzar Feast very well. The latter also used the massive Atlanta Symphony Chorus for Walton's interpretation of a Biblical story. We have been blessed with excellent music directors: Robert Shaw, Yoel Levi, Robert Spano, and now Nathalie Stutzmann. We look forward to hearing more Beethoven symphonies this year.

  • Conductor Roderick Cox is perfectly in his element.

by Seduced by greatness. on 1/12/25Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic or awesome are only words. I just know that I encountered greatness. The conductor, Maestro Roderick Cox, is a force and completely dominates his art. At the end of the concert, I was on my feet, screaming BRAVO, until Maestro Cox walked off. His mastery at leading that incredible group of talented musicians left me so thankful that I witnessed excellence. I was seduced by greatness. The next week, I subscribed to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. My worry is that the bar is now too high for others to follow.
