Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Live

Since its birth in the late 1930s, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has earned its place as one of the most renowned orchestras in the nation. With over 150 live shows annually, each performance delivers depth and mastery brought forth by the ASO's renowned Maestros and award-winning guest artists. The 2022-2023 season marks the 78th for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and guests can expect a historic and exciting year for classical music in Atlanta. In 2022, the Symphony welcomed its fifth-ever Music Director, Nathalie Stutzmann. Described as "a consummate rock star on the podium" by ArtsATL, Maestro Stutzmann is expected to usher in a new era of musical culture for the ASO and Atlanta as a whole. Stutzmann began her first season featuring 13 living composers, including Hilary Purrington, Tyshawn Sorey and Joel Thompson. In her first season, Stutzmann is also leading eight programs featuring the classical masters, including Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony," Brahms' "Third Symphony" and a two-week Bach celebration culminating in Bach's "St. Matthew Passion." For fans of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's returning and pop culture series, you won't want to miss highlights like the hit program Star Wars and More: The Music of John Williams or performances of Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy soundtrack with a unique HD video multimedia experience.

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Concert

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra was originally founded by Anne Grace O'Callaghan in 1939 as the In-and-About High School Atlanta Symphony. As Supervisor of Music for Atlanta high schools, O'Callaghan started the passion project by recruiting the best high school players across the region. By 1943, Chicago Conductor Henry Sopkin had joined the ranks to lead the young musicians. The talented group's performances quickly drew the interest of patrons and investors, and by 1945 the Atlanta Music Club had offered Sopkin an eight-month contract to develop the Atlanta Youth Symphony. Finally, in 1947, the Youth Symphony dropped the "Youth" moniker and played their first concert as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra -- the start of decades to come as a world-renowned institution of classical music. Since then, ASO has traveled nationwide and internationally, been hosted by U.S. Presidents and won 27 Grammy Awards as of 2022 in Best Classical Album, Best Orchestral Performance, Best Choral Performance, and Best Opera Performance categories.

    A perfect musical trip

by Lady Loves Music on 2/18/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

Carlos Simon curates was excellent! Combining the symphony with spoken word was healing❤️. My heart remembers grandma’s spirituals, mom’s hymns and my own time in a choir! The venue was a delight

    Perfect for all ages

by Bethany on 2/13/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

This was our first time going to one of the movie series concerts, and we wish we had gone to all of the Harry Potter concerts! I realize movie scores might not be the most sophisticated pieces for a professional musician to play, but I hope they continue to do this series because it brings in so many people of all ages who might ordinarily never see a live symphony orchestra.

    Amazing performance

by Cole on 2/12/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

So amazingly beautiful and we really enjoyed this performance. The orchestra was on stage so we were able to see the musicians play and it was an absolute joy to see them. Such a fun time, the music was perfect with the movie. We’ll definitely be back for future performances.

Coolest way to watch a movie, EVER!!!

by Lauren on 2/12/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

Phenomenal experience! The marta station is just around the corner and the pizza shop across the street from there, DaVinci Pizzeria, was the perfect way to start our dinner and a movie evening. The bathrooms inside the venue are a decent walk from the hall itself, and there are no cup holders available inside the event hall. But the "movie concert"experience went beyond my expectations! Will definitely do it again!

    AMAZING

by ATLGirlFoodie on 2/12/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

This is our 3rd ASO movie, and we have thoroughly enjoyed every single one. This one was no different. We especially appreciated the short lines at the Delta 360 club! Everything was seamless beginning to end.

    Great Performance, Terrible Atmosphere

by Melissa on 2/11/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

We absolutely love Atlanta Symphony and have been patrons for decades. HOWEVER, we attended 5 concerts (including this one) between October and February and IT IS TOO HOT IN THE AUDITORIUM. Yes, I understand that heat rises, but when you have a packed house, I should not be suffocating in the loge section and have to leave early. PLEASE LEAVE THE HEAT OFF- EVEN IN WINTER TIME. Every single event we've attended we have had to leave at intermission because of how ungodly hot it is. Also, please stop overserving audience members alcohol. At HP and the Half Blood Prince, we had a drunk guy fall all over us during the performace and fall down the stairs into the light/sound guy before stumbling up the stairs to visit the restroom. Ushers then allowed him back in! What the heck, ASO??? So he falls over us back to his seat. We left at intermission.

Great time at ASO for The Planets

by Lulu on 2/8/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

The ASO (and guests) performance of The Planets was great! Really enjoyed all the music. The Woodruff Arts Center is a great venue, easy on site parking (if you arrive early), and hospitable staff. I'll definitely attend another performance.

The Beauty of Gustav Holst's Music

by Holst-Peeps on 2/7/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

What an amazing evening. My entire family enjoyed what was, arguably, one of the best performances from the ASO. Granted, I'm a Gustav Holst listener, so feel free to take that into consideration. My daughter, especially, will remember this night. This was her Christmas gift.

    Astounding Sounds

by MJB on 2/6/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

Before the concert, I met up with my college colleague, whom I had not seen since 1979, for dinner. We caught each other up on our lives and had a great meal. He told me a lot about the program because he is the keyboard player for the Symphony and had quite a bit to do with playing piano and Celeste. The first piece was a collage of sounds that imitated rainfall in New Zealand, where the composer resides. Just beautiful and appealing. The percussion concerto was perfect. Up on the loge I got to be near one of the drum players. All manner of Marimba, Vibraphone, and chimes were used to great effect by the composer, Adam Schoenberg, and the performers. The piece deals with environmental deterioration - how it might sound to live under water, for instance. The Planets by Holst are exciting, atmospheric, and surprising, no matter how often one hears it. The conductor, Gemma New, expertly led this fantastic orchestra through all the movements.

    Overjoyed!

by Recovering drummer on 2/5/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

What a conductor! She should be recognized among a small handful of the new (New!) generation's BEST. She deserves the directorship of a major orchestra. Let's hope she returns to Atlanta annually.
