Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Live

Since its birth in the late 1930s, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has earned its place as one of the most renowned orchestras in the nation. With over 150 live shows annually, each performance delivers depth and mastery brought forth by the ASO's renowned Maestros and award-winning guest artists. The 2022-2023 season marks the 78th for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and guests can expect a historic and exciting year for classical music in Atlanta. In 2022, the Symphony welcomed its fifth-ever Music Director, Nathalie Stutzmann. Described as "a consummate rock star on the podium" by ArtsATL, Maestro Stutzmann is expected to usher in a new era of musical culture for the ASO and Atlanta as a whole. Stutzmann began her first season featuring 13 living composers, including Hilary Purrington, Tyshawn Sorey and Joel Thompson. In her first season, Stutzmann is also leading eight programs featuring the classical masters, including Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony," Brahms' "Third Symphony" and a two-week Bach celebration culminating in Bach's "St. Matthew Passion." For fans of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's returning and pop culture series, you won't want to miss highlights like the hit program Star Wars and More: The Music of John Williams or performances of Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy soundtrack with a unique HD video multimedia experience.

Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in Concert

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra was originally founded by Anne Grace O'Callaghan in 1939 as the In-and-About High School Atlanta Symphony. As Supervisor of Music for Atlanta high schools, O'Callaghan started the passion project by recruiting the best high school players across the region. By 1943, Chicago Conductor Henry Sopkin had joined the ranks to lead the young musicians. The talented group's performances quickly drew the interest of patrons and investors, and by 1945 the Atlanta Music Club had offered Sopkin an eight-month contract to develop the Atlanta Youth Symphony. Finally, in 1947, the Youth Symphony dropped the "Youth" moniker and played their first concert as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra -- the start of decades to come as a world-renowned institution of classical music. Since then, ASO has traveled nationwide and internationally, been hosted by U.S. Presidents and won 27 Grammy Awards as of 2022 in Best Classical Album, Best Orchestral Performance, Best Choral Performance, and Best Opera Performance categories.

    Excellent Performances

by Rhschulz on 3/26/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

We have been season ticket holders for many years but now we just pick certain concerts we want to see at the last minute. Carmina Burana was exceptional with the ASO and chorus. The Opera singers Janai Brugger, Miles Mykkanen, and Anthony Clark Evans were exceptional. The Georgia boys choir sang gloriously . The conductor Krzysztof Urbanski lead the musicians to brilliance. Bravo!!

    A generous gift

by Rosie on 3/21/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

We took our grandson for the Symphony's St. Pat's Day celebration for children. We are so grateful to the ASO for introducing the little ones to lovely music and instruments in a manner that is accessible to children. At the end our six-year grandson said, "I don't want it to be over."That's the highest compliment I can think of. Thank you, ASO!!!

    Family Fun

by Nana on 3/21/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

Taking my grandchildren to a concert by the ASO, for very reasonable prices, was a fabulous experience. The Irish dancers were adorable and so talented. The added excitement of the “fairies” (acrobats) was thrilling. Thank you!

    Enjoyable night with ASO

by ConcertDad on 3/19/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

ASO is always a treat to hear, and Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty was no different. Symphony Hall is a very nice venue with excellent acoustics, amenities and staff. ASO performed exceptionally well, consistent with their reputation as an immensely talented orchestra. This particular concert was obviously for fans of Tchaikovsky but I have been to numerous ASO events and they are worth hearing regardless of the composer.

    One of the Best Programs

by JW on 2/20/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

The performance was excellent! The artists displayed their unique and outstanding talents: arrangers, composers, singers, conductors, instrumental prowess and narration skills. We were thrilled with the presentations. There were instrumental sounds from the orchestra that were new to me. I wish we'd had an opportunity to know which instruments were being used to create these sounds. The orchestral interpretation of the selections, "Ring Shout"(arranged by H. Smith) and then ("Brea[d]th"(by C.Simon and M. B. Joseph) were absolutely phenomenal. Indeed, the professional singers, K. P. Brown and Brian Major both sang with great pathos and beauty. I especially enjoyed the U. Brown, Jr. arrangement of "We Shall Overcome". My response was an emotional one. Thank you for providing such an inspiring concert for Atlanta's diverse and appreciative audience. Bravo!!

    Carlos Simon soars!

by arnold_drummond on 2/20/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - Atlanta

The concert was more than just music; it was a celebration of Black identity and social justice. The true star of the night was soprano Kearstin Piper Brown. Aria after aria, she left the audience breathless. The Morehouse and Spelman College Glee Clubs were amazing and a throwback to my time with the Glee Club, but Brown stole the show. Her voice reminded us of the power of art to heal and inspire. Carlos Simon and Kearstin Brown created magic!

The role that Carlos Simon played in curating the memorable artistic landscape was amazing. His choice of background music while the poem about social justice was being read was perfect. Mr. Simon selected just the right artists and songs to make the evening one of the most amazing evenings in the arts that I’ve ever experienced. Kudos to all who participated.
