    A Country Music Legend

    by Glad2meetU on 8/27/09Birchmere - Alexandria

Western swing, progressive country, whatever you want to call it, it's just good fun when musicians exhibit the love of their trade and it infectiously shows. Ray and his backup memebers delight, individually and as a group. Wish the show was longer, but as Ray commented, he also wished the hall was larger. The man deserves a documentary for sticking to his guns all these years and delivering. (Best selling albums or not, everyone can't be Willie Nelson but he's pretty close for not being too serious of a writer---hence his strength.) Wish him well with his next release "Willie and the Wheel". Before he even mentioned the collaboration I could swear I saw Ray morphing into Willie on some sort of timeline with a not too distant arrival date. Good Luck, Ray! Happy Trails!

    Converted at a tender age

by BoogieWoog on 8/27/09Birchmere - Alexandria

Steeped in '60s soul music (Stax, Muscle Shoals kinda stuff), I was pretty fixed in my musical tastes and record acquistions. But while living in Madison, WI, in the late-1970s, a friend suggested my interest in boogie tunes might be enhanced by a listen to a cover of the Louis Jordan tune 'Choo Choo Ch'boogie. The disk was 'Asleep At the Wheel.' One listen and I was hooked -- these boys from West Virginia could lay down a lick and kept me comin' back. The relocation to Austin only seems to have added to the band's immersion in total Texas swing. Today, the intersection of Willie and the Wheel maintains that nod to the swing of old but offered with a verve and freshness that makes the room jump.

Especially enjoyed Elizabeth, the old standbys and the new songs too! Hey, even the food was better than we remembered.

    Never the same show

by Bettsi on 8/27/09Birchmere - Alexandria

Asleep at the Wheel was really good, as usual. Unfortunately, getting to the Birchmere 90 minutes early does NOT secure a table close to the front, so the sound was so-so. The band did more slow songs than usual and quite a few Willie Nelson and "Willie and the Wheel" numbers. The best thing about AATW is that their music catalog is huge, and we never get the same show twice. They did NOT begin with Cherokee Maiden, rather with "Miles", and even their encore was different.

    the wheel keeps turning

by dabare on 8/27/09Birchmere - Alexandria

Asleep at the Wheel rarely disappoints...it certainly did not last night. With cuts from a new album with Willie Nelson plus some oldies we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Special kudos for Elizabeth who was in fine form... a great night for wheel lovers.

Great show! Only thing missing was sawdust!

by sandbag on 8/27/09Birchmere - Alexandria

Asleep At the Wheel is a great small-venue band; they play western swing in an intimate setting really well. They did a good range of their body of work, played a lot of crowd favorites, and did an exceptional job overall.

    Asleep At The Wheel

by BobbieAanne on 8/27/09Birchmere - Alexandria

Asleep At The Wheel was fantastic! I hadn't seen them in 20 years and they were still has energized and fun as always. This was our first time at the Birchmere and LOVED the venue! I was a little disappointed that some of the older tunes weren't played such as "Ain't nobdy here but us chickens" & "Am I high" but all in all it was a good show. Thanks.

Asleep at the Wheel Always Outstanding!!

by JuneSteve on 8/27/09Birchmere - Alexandria

Thank goodness for Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel! For those of us who know and love the music of Bob Wills and the genre known as Texas Swing we are forever grateful for Ray's long standing devotion and determination to carry the torch. So few seem to know that Bob Wills unique vision, style and very early combination of instruments is responsible for the evolution of Big Band music and ultimately the morph known as Rock and Roll. Spread the word, great show!

    Asleep at the Wheel Rocks!!!!

by KTRSS on 8/27/09Birchmere - Alexandria

I never miss a chance to see Asleep at the Wheel. Ray and the gang are outstanding musicians. I like all kinds of music, but they have to be one of the best, if not THE BEST at Western Swing. Elizabeth is a great addition to the band. The Birchmere is also a great venue to see any act at. Good service, good location and easy to get in and out of.

Asleep at the Wheel was awesome!

by GailB on 8/27/09Birchmere - Alexandria

What a treat for Texans misplaced in Washington, DC to hear some really great music! Music we hadn't heard in so long was a joy to hear. Not normally people who hoot and holler, we made an exception last night! Thanks for a great show!

    Asleep @ the Wheel

by DMAautmn on 8/27/09Birchmere - Alexandria

Show was great as usual. However, I missed John Michael (previous piano player). The new piano player didn't seem to enjoy himself which was sad. Loved Eddie, steel guitar player. And Ray Benson is wonderful. Will plan on returning to the Birchmere for future shows. Especially liked that the band changed the play list and included some new songs from Willie & the Wheel.

Asleep At The Wheel at Birchmere - 8/26/09

by DFBlues on 8/27/09Birchmere - Alexandria

Great venue. Great band. You can never go wrong with seeing these folks. If you like the best in Cowboy/Cowgirl; Texas Swing music, these are the guys. Each member a superb top notch musician. And they all look like they're having a blast. Favorite part is when Ray mentioned Willie (Nelson) "couldn't be here tonight." "Then again, he was never going to be here tonight." referencing their new Willie and the Wheel album. Then, a band member said, "Filling in for Willie Nelson is Ray Benson" who then replied, "I had to get real high for this part .... " Was a fun night!

    AATW was great!

by JDTexas on 8/12/09Billy Bob's - Fort Worth

I have always been a big fan of Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel and that type of music. Thisis the 3rd time I have seen them and it was a great night. It was my birthday and I had front row tickets with my wife......they played most of my favorite songs, some new ones and they could have stayed hours longer.

This was a fun-filled evening of Asleep At The Wheel's favorites. We were dancing in our seats because we didn't want to get up to dance and miss anything. We are looking forward to their return and seeing them again.

Asleep At The Wheel was Awesome!

by Sagan on 8/8/09Billy Bob's - Fort Worth

Asleep At The Wheel is one of those bands that sound the same as their CD on concert. They are always great and you can tell they have a great time on stage together and really enjoy what they do.
