Black Violin on Tour

The wait is over. Grammy-nominated hip-hop duo Black Violin have announced more than 55 dates for their 2022 tour. Off the heels of their successful 2019 album Take the Stairs, which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, the classically trained duo are eager to showcase their original style on the big stage. Audience members fawn over the raw talent displayed by the hip-hop group for their amazing performances that infuse classical arrangements from the violin and viola with modern 808's, high-hats and other genre-bending elements. "The concert had the audience clapping, waving, light shining, dancing and smiling," one audience member wrote in a review of their concert on Ticketmaster. Experience a diverse performance that features both original compositions from the group like the hit single "Stereotypes" from the album of the same name.

Black Violin Live in Concert

High school friends Kevin Sylvester (Kev Marcus) and Wilner Baptiste (Wil B) met in a Fort Lauderdale performing arts program as teens. While Sylvester plays the violin, Baptiste plays the viola and together they create a distinct sound that rocked the hip-hop community. Despite attending different colleges, the two gravitated back toward one another and decided to try their hand at music full-time. Their first taste of stardom came when they performed alongside Grammy winner Alicia Keys at the 2004 Billboard Music Awards. The duo used this momentum to provide musical support on tour for artists such as Wu-Tang Clan and Kanye West. Baptiste also has musical credits on studio albums for hip-hop sensations Lupe Fiasco, B.o.B and Lil Wayne. In 2007, the duo released their self-titled debut album, and the follow-up, Classically Trained, a few years later. Their 2019 album Take the Stairs was nominated for a Grammy, the duo's first recognition. Most recently, Black Violin released their own spin on a Christmas album titled Give Thanks. In 2019, Sylvester, Baptiste and Phil Beaudreau founded their own label titled Di Versatile Music Group to promote the release of Take the Stairs, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Classical and Classical Crossover charts, and cracked the Top 10 on the Top New Artists chart and Hip Hop and R&B Chart.

    A true black experience

by No Impulse on 4/12/24Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

I wasn’t sure what to expect, I’ve seen violinist bring a little something different to the music platform before, but Black Violin. Mwah! The music was fun, traditional, classical and soulful. I love how they addressed the audience, especially recognizing and connecting with the youth (future up and coming violinists). Sharing the message that violinist don’t sit on the side lines, violinist also get paid! Two young black men playing such a tiny not commonly aligned with the black community instrument bringing us to our feet, dancing and singing along. I was so honored to be in their audience and I will do it again

I would definitely go ten times over. They were amazing. All of the bands as well. And taking time out to talk to the youth was awesome of them.

    Fantastic Performance

by Bklynglamma on 4/10/24Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

This was my first time to attend a performance of the Black Violins and I can guarantee it won't be my last. There are no words to describe a fantastic show by these musicians. I took my eight year old granddaughter with me and she insisted we must see them again. I must applaud these gentlemen for the message they conveyed to the children in the audience. They spoke about their love for music and how they were teased but in the end they received scholarships for college. I appreciate their emphasis to explain to the audience whatever you do continue to practice and see what happens. These musicians had the audience engaged and what a great feeling.

Unexpected opening act - very short show

by LisaYettaJ on 4/10/24Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

Im a faithful BV fan and get tickets in the orchestra pit every year. The 2024 Norfolk show was very disappointing and very different from past shows. An opening solo act was added who started at the 7:30 showtime, wasn’t announced, walked onstage, pulled out his guitar and started playing without introducing himself. His lyrics were hard to hear and the lights were on during his set. His music style was more like modern folk music (picture a young Sudanese male Joni Mitchell) but it didn’t match BV’s energy. Between songs he commented on the pleasant surprise that so many arrived early to enjoy his opening act - he actually blurted out he didn’t expect a full house so early due to CP Time…. That joke was in poor taste. In actuality, we were on time for the headliner. Since the lights were on, an audience member next to me was trying to Google him to figure out who he was and what he was saying. She found a link to him but I was so disinterested from the constant comments about his love for being black. He played from 7:30 - about 8 pm and each song in his repertoire was about the wonderful state of being Black in America. I’m black but this felt tone-deaf, redundant and poorly planned out. BV came onto the stage at 8:15, their set seemed short…. There wasn’t an intermission although one was scheduled. The show was over at 9:45. That was quite a surprise.

    Black Violin OUTSTANDING

by George Davis on 4/10/24Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

I thoroughly enjoyed the Black Violin performance. They were amazing. I enjoyed ALL facets of the concert. It was good to see them playing not only the R&B, Hip-Hop, and Soul music, but they also gave us a little country western (Devil Went Down to Georgia) and they effortlessly played a classical piece. I could tell all the musicians love what they do. It showed in their enthusiastic solos and collaborations. The improv was also a great part. Bring them back!!!
