Written and directed by celebrated playwright Conor McPherson and featuring Tony Award-winning orchestrations by Simon Hale, GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY reimagines 20 legendary songs of Bob Dylan as they've never been heard before, including "Forever Young," "All Along The Watchtower" and "Like A Rolling Stone."
It's 1934 in Duluth, Minnesota. We meet a group of wayward travelers whose lives intersect in a guesthouse filled with music, life and hope. Experience this 'profoundly beautiful' production (The New York Times) brought to vivid life by an extraordinary company.
I thoroughly enjoyed the play. The cast was superb.
We left at intermission. Sound wasn’t great. Show was boring, characters didn’t seem connected. Depressing. Others who left when we did couldn’t even identify the Dylan music.
The Girl from the North Country was much different than expected. It's a musical but not like any other. First and foremost, the TALENT was superb. Their voices were amazing. No complaints there. However, the story was dark and confusing and since I am not a huge fan of Dylan (just never followed his music...a bit before my time) I didn't understand the meaning of the songs where they were placed in the production and sadly, the only songs I recognized was Rolling Stone and Hurricane. I feel this was confusing labeling it as a musical. I feel it was more of a drama (play) with some songs thrown in. I understand that is not the intention but it was how I felt about it. The MOTHER was amazing. as was the entire cast.
A little hard to follow and depressing. Beautiful singing! Still a great date night.
I remember attending many events at the Sam Houston Colosseum and Music Hall in the past. The actors in the play did a very good job and the singing was even better. Most of the cast did solos and all of the songs were really good. I will go back again.
I wasn't sure what to expect but the show and characters were interesting and engaging. I loved the staging/choreography and the beautiful arrangements of such wonderful music. BRAVO!
Well…this was interesting. I estimate that less than 40% of the audience returned after intermission. The couple in front of me made it past 2 scenes. #enoughsaid P.S. - Vocals are fantastic. It’s sad, because the performers deserve to be cast in a much stronger musical…that actually has a storyline that remotely matches the music. Actors = 9/10 Script Writer….. 👀
The show was slow and half the theater left at intermission. Hard to hear dialogue-
Don't waste your money. A chaotic play with no plot. Fair Park has poor acoustics and many times its difficult to understand/hear what the actors are saying. Only saving grace...Jennifer Blood was outstanding as the mother. Wonderful voice...did an outstanding rendition of Like a Rolling Stone.
This musical is dark and depressing. There was very little dancing. Even the settings were dark and dreary. I would not recommend this musical to anyone unless they are huge fans of Bob Dylan and willing to sit through this tedious storyline to hear his music.
