My Fair Lady on Tour
With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.
Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.
The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.
About My Fair Lady the Musical
Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.
In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.
Very lovely production of a true musical classic. Ambitious casting, costumes and set for a touring company.
I’ve seen over 40 shows in NYC. The singing, acting and orchestra was as good as Broadway. 5 stars
Wonderfully done with superb singing and choreography. Not too many shows are worth their ticket price these days but this one was the exception.
The "My Fair Lady"production was world class. The scenery was wonderful and the music and singing were such a delight to listen to. I cannot remember when I have had such an enjoyable evening as this. Bravo to all involved in this excellent musical.
Great venue for a great performance! The singing was excellent and the 3 hours moved quickly!
The performance was very funny, entertaining and the singing was amazing! Very talented group of performers!! Enjoyed immensely!
Great performance with a fantastic ensemble. Orchestra was outstanding. The venue was really nice and friendly.
This show was absolutely amazing! It was 3 hours of pure entertainment. I was blown away by the singing, dancing and overall acting of the entire cast. I'm so glad that I was able to see this show. Even a week later, I am still singing "I could've danced all night"in my head. Can't wait for my next show.
It was an awesome production of My Fair Lady!!! A show my friends and I know every word to. A great outing with friends in a great venue and an always uplifting show!!!
This was a loverly performance of a Broadway staple. The singing, acting, music, costumes were first rate. There were a couple of liberties taken with the story that were unnecessary. Men in drag for "I'm Getting Married in the Morning"was jarring and took away from an otherwise fabulous scene. Also, in the scene just prior to "I Could Have Danced All Night"the professor and Eliza never danced, causing confusion as to why she would be singing those lyrics. Otherwise, it was a delightful performance by all.
Excellent! Acoustics is excellent! Beautiful venue!
My Fair Lady at the Tanger Center was absolutely fabulous! The cast was brilliantly talented. The costumes were so beautiful and spot on. It was funny and touching. The singing was fantastic and Eliza and Dr Higgins were brought to wonderful life by the actors. We enjoyed every minute of it. I would go see it again and again.
It was great musical. I enjoyed all characters. I found myself humming to all the iconic songs.
My Fair Lady is a classic. This rendition was vulgar at times.Definitely not what I was expecting. Casting of Professor Higgins was great. The set was amazing. I could just do without the let’s make it more up to date push the envelope drama.
I had seen "My Fair Lady"in its original production at Lincoln Center in New York, and was so enchanted with the production that I gifted tickets to my parents for the Tanger Center engagement. They LOVED the show, and even my father, who doesn't see a lot of Broadway shows, said "I know all these songs." This was their first visit to the Tanger Center, and they were astounded by the beautiful spaces, the technical capabilities, and the hard work of the house staff to make entering and leaving the theater so comfortable and seamless. Everything about the experience was top-notch...thanks!
I had bought these for my mother for Christmas, I had never watched the movie was unsure what to really expect. I thought this performance was absolutely amazing. Would suggest anyone into musicals to go watch even if you are unsure of what it is about. You will not be disappointed!
The Tanger Center venue, beautiful set designs, costumes, amazing timing with the music, wonderful voices and acting. We were drawn into the performance which raced by. I could have watched all night, we could have watched all night…
Fabulous performance and singing with stunning set design
During my entire life, I've loved My Fair Lady since my parents saw it on Broadway, bought and played the record repeatedly all the way through watching the movie many times. But Disney reminded me that I should not trust them because they decided to make Colonel Pickering into a homosexual instead of leaving him as a "confirmed old bachelor". Disney's policy to tamper with culture had to penetrate a classic.
Great show, the actors were great and the orchestra was superb!
