The Office! A Musical Parody

The beloved mockumentary reaches a new level of laughs with The Office! A Musical Parody. Fans of the television series will be happy to know that all their favorite characters are on board, as are some key plot elements. When the original British version of The Office premiered in 2001, it brought something completely new to television comedy. Sure, sitcoms had lampooned office culture before, but never with the cringe-inducing level of awkwardness that creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant allowed their characters to display. Then the American Office became an enormous hit series -- and a comedy landmark. In the hands of writers Bob and Tobly McSmith, the stage version adds an unexpected tuneful touch that takes things to another place entirely, and the outrageousness lives on.

The Office! A Musical Parody History

The British send-up of dysfunctional workplace life that was broadcast on BBC from 2001 through 2003 became such a success in America that it couldn't help but inspire a US version. Premiering in 2005, the American Office, starring Steve Carell, lasted for an amazing nine seasons. When Bob and Tobly McSmith took the stateside sitcom series and created a theatrical version, the pair had already let their satirical minds loose on musical takeoffs of everything from Friends to Full House, so by the time they tackled The Office, they were fully primed. But this is far from just a stage re-creation. As a musical parody, the production mines the medium for even more comic gold -- and gives you something to hum on the way home. Whether you're a die-hard fan of the series or getting introduced to the characters for the first time, The Office! A Musical Parody will prove that however insane your own workplace may seem to you, it's comparatively a whole lot more normal than you may think.

    Good show for Office fans

by Poppy on 4/30/19The Theater Center - New York

Overall we liked the show, but we are huge Office fans and appreciated much of the humor. A few belly laughs and a few dry spots...actress that played Kevin, Phyllis and Meredith was hilarious. Would have liked to see more pranks between Jim and Dwight. I think they shortchanged Stanley and Darryl's parts in order to be more PC for today's audience, which was also disappointing because political incorrectness and making fun of our society norms was part of the magic of the show.

    Nonstop energy & laughs

by WebGuy on 4/30/19The Theater Center - New York

This cast NAILED The Office. At first I was on the fence about a woman playing Michael. She was INCREDIBLE! From the changing of the characters - everyone was just awesome. The guy who played Jim & Andy was hysterical. The energy from this cast was nonstop. Very funny. Would (& already have) recommended it to people.

Man, everything about this musical was amazing. Emphatic. Revelatory. There were some standout performances such as the actress who played Oscar, Karen and Kelly and DEFINITELY ANDY! Redidididoooo!

    Not so funny "Office"

by M. on 4/28/19The Theater Center - New York

While there were a few redeeming moments in this parody, overall it was a waste of some pretty amazing talent. We thought the actors were great but they had little to work with in a script that was simply not funny. Many of the jokes fell flat; I can count on one hand the times I actually laughed.

    Awesome time

by Mike on 3/12/19The Theater Center - New York

Everything was great: the venue, the lobby folks, easy in/out, the show. Best were the writing and the actors. If you've seen every episode of The Office, you must go. If you're even just familiar with it, or don't know it, you're going to have a blast.

    It was OK

by D. on 3/12/19The Theater Center - New York

The theater was small which is fine. Seats were comfortable. Set was OK. Actors and actresses were good. Costumes were nothing to write home about. Wigs were awful. I watch the office daily and some stuff I didn’t even get. I fell asleep 3/4 of the way through.

If you’re a fan of The Office and know the series well, you have to see this. They cover a lot of the major storylines and also throw in a lot of one liners for other storylines. We enjoyed everything about the show.
