A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have. Evan Hansen is about to get the one thing he's always wanted: a chance to finally fit in. DEAR EVAN HANSEN is the deeply personal and profoundly contemporary musical about life and the way we live it.
DEAR EVAN HANSEN has struck a remarkable chord with audiences and critics everywhere, including The Washington Post who says DEAR EVAN HANSEN is "Theatrical magic. One of the most remarkable shows in musical theatre history." The New York Times calls it "a breathtaking knockout of a musical." And NBC Nightly News declares the musical "an anthem resonating on Broadway and beyond."
DEAR EVAN HANSEN features a book by Tony Award winner Steven Levenson, a score by Grammy®, Tony® and Academy Award® winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman), and direction by four-time Tony Award nominee Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal).
It was great BUT Evan was weak, felt like he was struggling. Connor was amazing!
This is the second time I've seen the show. The first time was in New York so, probably not a fair comparison. I thought the singing was very good, but the volume was quite soft and we were seated 3rd row, center isle. The actor who played Even, while quite a good singer, tried too hard to look anxious. I did not like his efforts at squinting frequently. Other than that, I would recommend this play for it's important message.
We saw Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway in April 22’ and lived it so much we had to see it again. So why not make it the focus of our mommy daughter Christmas outing. We loved it!!!!
Beautiful musical with amazingly talented up and coming performers. It will make you feel so many things but also has a touch of humor throughout. Highly recommend!
My overall grade for this play: B-/C+. (I'm a tough grader.). The story was not well constructed, text was all over the place, music was so elementary as to be boring. Positives: It raised (but of course couldn't adequately "resolve") some very important contemporary social issues such as teen suicide, teenage isolation and loneliness, teenagers' ignoring those of their age-peers who are "different" in various ways, failures of teens and their parents to communicate meaningfully and effectively, the difficulties of being a parent trying to rear a "different" child or teenager, etc. To me, the most significant positive aspect of this production was the lead characters in the cast: They were TERRIFIC; it was worth seeing the show just to watch and listen to some terrific singing.
Great show, saw the movie but this was sooooo much better. Took my young adult kids and they loved it too. If you have the chance to see it…GO!!!
A sad play that gets stickier as it goes on and in the end, it all works out for everyone
Dear Evan Hansen was such a moving show. It explores so many relatable themes. The ensemble did an incredible job! The actor who played Evan, Jeffrey Cornelius, did a phenomenal job bringing Evan to life and leading the show. I want to see the show again!
the show was amazing!!! our seats were pretty good (we were in the balcony) and we could see everything.
Loved the show! Great story and great music. Would recommend.
Great show great seats. Inexperienced theater attendees behind us. Kneeing the seats, crunching paper. A little frustrating, but really enjoyed the show!
Loved our seats. Great view. The show was very well done. Our family will be back for more shows.
I was really looking forward to this, but the performance was lackluster. We could barely hear the lead and his sitting and acting were subpar.
The play deals with a serious and present problem, but it is handled well. The main character, Evan Hansen, is a lonely, depressed teen whose fortunes change by an unfortunate incident and his reaction to it. The show was done so well, and the staging was spectacular. The entire cast was outstanding...wonderful evening.
There was little to no chemistry amongst the cast members. I should have left feeling something besides disappointed. I went home and watched the movie and felt more emotions than I did seeing it live on stage, which is a rarity. Evan spoke so fast and was so mechanical it was hard to empathize with him. The actress playing his mother was...how shall I say it?.... .AWFUL. She was yelling, she was cold, she was uncaring, she gave me the "Icks." For all of the awards this show won, I feel disappointed that I spent hundreds of dollars on something that felt stoic and mechanical. These casting agents need to do better. Directors and producers have to notice the lack of chemistry amongst the cast. Beyond disappointed.
Sad story of raising awareness of the mental state of so many. Performed by an amazing cast
Thank you for the $25 on the 25th! This is my third time seeing this amazing show. Vocals were a little off at first but turned around. Zoe, your broadway debit!! You were amazing as was the Connor understudy. Heavy content, beautiful music, a story everyone needs to hear.
Evan Hansen is a great musical, but with the Evan character being in every scene, he has to be played by a very talented performer who can hold their own for the length of the show. I believe we had a new performer, and although I respect how much work goes into that part, he was lacking in vocals and acting skills both. The supporting characters were a mixed bag of talent. Maybe they were recovering from the Christmas holiday, but it wasn’t performed at the level were used to for plays in Chicago. It is a fun musical nonetheless, we will probably just check reviews next time we choose a production.
Packed house. Great voices, good story.Didn't know the story beforehand. Very enjoyable evening.
I've been a fan of this musical for years. I originally purchased tickets to see it before the pandemic hit and had to cancel. I was eager to see this on stage because the movies never do Broadway justice. I was eager to see the live performance and hear the heartfelt harmonies. I also scored amazing seats!! Worth the wait. Broadway is back in Chicago!
