About

A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have. Evan Hansen is about to get the one thing he's always wanted: a chance to finally fit in. DEAR EVAN HANSEN is the deeply personal and profoundly contemporary musical about life and the way we live it.

DEAR EVAN HANSEN has struck a remarkable chord with audiences and critics everywhere, including The Washington Post who says DEAR EVAN HANSEN is "Theatrical magic. One of the most remarkable shows in musical theatre history." The New York Times calls it "a breathtaking knockout of a musical." And NBC Nightly News declares the musical "an anthem resonating on Broadway and beyond."

DEAR EVAN HANSEN features a book by Tony Award winner Steven Levenson, a score by Grammy®, Tony® and Academy Award® winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman), and direction by four-time Tony Award nominee Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal).

  • Great performance!!!!!

by Fishermanklb on 12/27/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

I didnt like that the play had so much foul language in it !!!!! The movie didnt have any at all that i can remember. I just find it hard to believe the producers of the play were sitting around and said this would be so much better if we put more foul language in here.

Beautiful theater. Great story. Volume could have been adjusted better early in the show.

  • What a show!

Great cast! Great songs! Gut-wrenching drama and gripping emotional story for now. Would not hesitate to see again.

Great cast! Saw the understudy for Alana and Larry Murphy but was very impressed with the cast. My 8 and 9 year old boys loved it!!!

  • AMAZING performances - all the feels - A++++

by lvngmurphyslaw on 12/24/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Have to say this play hit my heart strongly - dealing with mental health concerns - social anxiety/depression/situation anxiety there were many times I was in tears - I also have family dynamics with a brother who is very similar to Conner Murphy's with anger and volatile outbursts - so after You Will Be Found you could find me literally chocking up in the theater - I have to say I watched the movie first as I had not heard of this play - although I liked the movie I decided to see the play it was based on afterwards - have to say hands down the play takes top billing - much like a book that tries to be made into a movie - making this play into a movie and cutting out the most important character building plots just doesn't work - the play you got introduced to Conner Murphy and the conversions throughout the play with Conner help you to connect with this character - also the performer who played Evan Murphy on the Wednesday 12/21/2022 matinee I attended was AMAZING - his anxiety was palpable - to have a performer able to emote so beautifully was amazing. It helped to bring to light the concern with mental health, addiction and the odd ways death has on society in that everyone wants to be part of the narrative after the fact even if you had no clue who the person was - I saw this in Chicago and am contemplating going again in the Spring when the play is in South Bend. Great Job everyone!

  • Great show!

The show was outstanding. The cast was subservient and it was an all over outstanding experience.

  • Excellent cast

by AlmostGreat on 12/24/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Great production. We had the Wednesday matinee cast. All were wonderful. Great seats. People who attend need to be reminded to shut down their phones, those screen lights are distracting. And the person next to me kept unzipping a plastic bag, and unwrapping caramels during the production. So rude.

  • Dear Evan Hansen

by Awed in the Audience on 12/24/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

What a touching and poignant show. My emotions ran between laughing and crying in a span of only moments. The acting and singing was wonderful, and staging interesting and clever. My only negative is that the musicians were at times a little too loud, hence overwhelming the singers -- making it difficult to understand what they were singing.

  • Voices too soft and too fast

by LMFox on 12/24/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Wonderful story. During our performance, I found that the volume of the voices could have been louder….and the speaking parts slowed down a bit. The audience is hearing this for the first time…so clarity should be key. I understand that fast talking is a part of the characters quirks…but a bit too much. Slow down and enunciate please. And before the performance the stage is set with texts scrolling ……but the jarring beeping almost drove me crazy.

  • Better than Broadway?

by Valsy on 12/23/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

My daughter and I were privileged to see Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway in 2017. It was fabulous! Got to see it again in Chicago before the pandemic. Seeing it this past week was more than we could hope for… And dare we say, that this cast was probably the best of all! Thank you for bringing us this important story over and over again!

  • Incredible show!!

This cast is incredibly talented. It was an absolutely amazing show, and I wish I could see it 100 more times!

  • Do Not Miss This

by skovar on 12/21/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Originally had tickets to see it in July 2020, however, something happened....hmmmm. Anyway we were able to catch it on it's run in Chicago and it was worth the wait! The acting and singing is amazing. the story hits home. All in all, I would see it again given the opportunity.

  • Not as good the 2nd time

by JW on 12/21/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

We saw Dear Evan Hansen in 2019 and we loved it so much that we wanted to go again and bring our adult son this time. While the music is great and storyline is moving, we didn't enjoy the cast this time around. It was hard not to compare the cast to the first time seeing it. A lot of the theater was empty which I guess says a lot about this touring show. We really liked the actor who played Connor, but thought the other main characters were weak. I almost felt like I was at a high school or college performance. Looking at the playbill, many of the actors are very young so that might be the reason I felt they weren't as seasoned. It was a nice day out, but would recommend seeing something else if you have the choice.

  • Loves it

This was a don’t miss it show. The acting and musical acts were all top notch. I highly recommend Dear Evan Hansen. Wish I had seen it sooner.

  • Incredible

One of the best shows I’ve ever seen. It’s a must see.

  • Unbelievably touching

by TT on 12/20/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I purposely didn't look into what this musical was about. I didn't watch the movie trailer or look up the premise or anything. This was incredibly touching, emotional, and absolutely incredibly performed. I couldn't give this enough stars. Worth every penny.

  • Excellent!

by MsRN on 12/20/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The show was excellent! It hit all of the feels: funny, sad, and poignant. The actors were engaging and the music was beautiful! My family and I would see this show over and over again if only we lived closer to the theater.

  • Well acted but sad

    by Puggy56 on 12/20/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

If you have ever dealt with mental illness, loneliness in high school, a parent who disappeared when you were a child. Or have been affected by suicide , this show is not for you. I have seen a lot of Broadway shows and this one is definitely at the bottom of my recommendation list. It hit too close to home. I cried.

  • Beautiful and Breathtaking

by Maddie on 12/18/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This is my favorite musical and it definitely did not disappoint. The actors and the emotion. Incredible. Had me crying. Had my boyfriend who doesn’t like musicals crying. Amazing.

  • Excellent Show!!!

by Grandma on 12/17/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The show was wonderful. It was a sad story but very heartfelt. The music was wonderful and the people selected to play the different parts couldn't have been better. We also selected the guest suite experience and it was very good ..... the snacks and drinks were really good and it was nice to have a place to store our belongings during the show. I would definitely pay the extra for the guest suite again.
