About

THE PREQUEL TO THE RECORD- SETTING, CHICAGO FAVORITE MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET

HEARTBREAK HOTEL follows the tender story of Elvis Presley in the early years of his burgeoning career as he and Sam Phillips create the music that will forever change their lives. As Elvis’s career skyrockets, both lifting and shattering the lives of those he loves, a secret love story is revealed, a betrayal is discovered, and “Colonel” Tom Parker changes the course of history, all in just 18 short months.

This brand new musical features hit songs from the King himself as well as the legends who influenced his iconic music, with chart-toppers including “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Tutti Frutti,” “That’s All Right Momma,” “Shake, Rattle, and Roll,” and, of course, “Heartbreak Hotel.” This is where the story begins… “take a walk down lonely street.”

    Elvis lives

by MrJim86 on 8/19/18Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Lots of good early rock ‘n’ roll for us children of the 50s but really not much of a story or book that we don’t already know. But great fun just for the joy of listening to 25 hit tunes from all of the rockers who started the movement of what was to become rock ‘n’ roll & it being here to stay

    Fun show with incredible singers

by kelb76 on 8/19/18Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

I had seen Million Dollar Quartet, which was outstanding, so I was looking forward to seeing this. My boyfriend is a huge Elvis fan and we went for my mom's birthday. They really enjoyed it. It was a little slow at times, but overall was a very good show. The 2 women that play multiple roles from choir singers to back-up singers to artists from the time are mind-blowingly good. Their voices gave me goosebumps they are so good. The finale was so fun. Overall, it was a really good show and we are glad we saw it.

    Heartbreaking story

LOVED the music, singers, musicians and costumes. The writing was off. The ending was abrupt BUT THE finale was great.

    Great show

by Bgolfer2 on 8/19/18Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Very talented cast and good story with lots off songs. All the singers have great voices. The lead that plays Elvis is good, but doesn't have the hip movement of the real Elvis. Still good and would highly recommend.

Heartbreak Hotel is not Million Dollar Quartet

by koerps on 8/18/18Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Had I seen Heartbreak Hotel before I saw Million Dollar Quartet, I would have liked it more. It suffers in the unavoidable comparison. The individual performances were excellent. The piece simply does not hold together well. Kudos to the whole cast for standing vigil for Elvis and Aretha.

    Great music; poor writing

by ticketmastertrixie on 8/15/18Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The music and performing was fantastic, but the storyline writing was choppy. Racial undertones were over-emphasized, building to a bizarre patriotic medley that didn’t fit in with the production. It seemed evident during that scene that the performers were less than enthusiastic about its inclusion, as well.

Good story line, Elvis was great

by showlovefest on 8/15/18Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Although the singers voices were great, I sometimes had a hard time hearing any words with the really high voices sounding a bit like screeching. The story line of how he came to be the star was very interesting. Colonel Parker was very good, as was Elvis, although Elvis' hair could have been more realistic. No regrets seeing it, but at the cost of the tickets, would have gone to see something else.

by Ktsch on 8/14/18Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

I took my dad who is 86 and will not sit through anything he doesn't like. From the very beginning he whispered "this is so good!" I loved it too and would see it again in a heartbeat.

    Lotta fun

by CBZW on 8/13/18Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The songs, story, and dancing were a flashback to when Elvis was young. We all wanted to sing along.

Great singing, dancing, and playing music

by emprof on 8/13/18Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The music, singing and dancing were very good. Unfortunately, the script was not up to par. I did not connect to the dialog as I did with three much better such plays: Jersey Boys, Million Dollar Quartet, and The Buddy Holly Story.

    Fun and entertaining

by karma100 on 8/13/18Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Very talented performers with a fun bit of Elvis history. My mom has been a lifelong Elvis fan and has always regretted not seeing him perform live. Though this wasn't quite the same, she really enjoyed the show, the music, and the overall experience. Great little theater too--there's not a bad seat in the house.

Heartbreak Hotel A Keeper of the Past

by Ralph3 on 8/12/18Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

From a pure entertainment viewpoint Heartbreak Hotel started a little slowly (in order to tell the story of Elvis' Memphis and black/white beginnings). I won't get bogged down in the story lline because I am more about the music; I'll just say it historically seemed basically on the mark. I remember my dad casually mentioning 50 years ago how Col. Parker was something of a sleaze and the play fills out his synopsis. The music picks up and takes over after the intermission. Much more vibrant and alive. Eddie Clendening is a winner as was Erin Burniston, the three African-American singers and the rest of the cast. If you are even a casual Elvis fan, you will enjoy it.
