Jesus Christ Superstar on Tour
The musical-theater version of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice's hit 1970 rock opera gets the passionate revival it has long deserved when the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre's production of Jesus Christ Superstar comes to the United States. The show's 50th Anniversary Tour offers an emotionally resonant, hard-rocking experience that debuted in London in 2016. Director Timothy Sheader and choreographer Drew McOnie's cutting-edge production won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards. The 50th Anniversary Tour marks the first major revival of Jesus Christ Superstar in nearly a decade.
Jesus Christ Superstar Background
Jesus Christ Superstar originated as a high-concept rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice in 1970 and sold more than 7 million copies by 1983. Their account of Jesus' last week of life made its Broadway debut as a musical in 1971, dazzling audiences with its stirringly maximal music and minimal dialogue. Two film adaptations followed, in 1973 and 1999, and NBC aired a live concert version, starring John Legend as Jesus, on April 1 (Easter Sunday), 2018.
"This is not your grandmother's Superstar," Catey Sullivan wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times when Timothy Sheader directed the musical in Chicago in 2018. "Drew McOnie's choreography has the explosive feel of barely contained ecstasy, filled with flailing movements that evoke old time tent revivals where snake handlers spoke in tongues and miraculously cured the sick."
The 50th Anniversary Tour production of Jesus Christ Superstar stars actor-singer-songwriter Aaron La Vigne as Jesus, actor-poet James Delisco Beeks as Judas and Jenna Rubaii as Mary Magdalene. You'll shout hallelujah! during the onstage rock band's renditions of "This Jesus Must Die," "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Superstar." And when one of the Pharisees sings, "One thing I'll say for him, Jesus is cool," you will take him at his word.

Overall, a very talented cast and excellent choreography. What was the purpose of Jesus and the guitar? He picked it up, put it down, played a couple of times. Really unnecessary and distracting. Hand held mics?? Why? In a production like this, no one should be passing a mic back and forth--again, distracting. Didn't understand the symbology of the lone dancer in black who appeared every now and then.
The music is timeless! The leads were great but the supporting cast was greater. Add to that the high-energy the remaining crew brings (and delivers) and a excellent production ensues. See it!
Loved everything about this show. We were riveted from the very beginning to the end. The performers were all awesome, the music was spectacular, everything was just wonderful. We want to see it again!!
I’ve never seen this before and it was definitely a good one!!
Of course I was more than familiar with the songs and the staging when Jesus Christ Superstar opened in the 1970s, I did not know how I would feel about it today nearly 50 years later! It was a phenomenal set, great choreography and the songs still relevant. It was a home run, and I just wish that it had been playing more than one night.
Singing and dancing were excellent. Thought they could have done better with their costumes. Large, tall speaker system set up on each side of the stage. Great sound for the music. We purchased box seats, so speakers partially blocked our view of the stage. Genesee Theatre was beautiful. Steps in balcony have no railing. As an elderly person going down to our seats was a little scary.
OUTSTANDING Performance of Jesus Christ Superstar! Acting, choreography, & music was phenomenal. Exceptional performances by cast & musicians. Highly recommend attending the performance of this troupe.
This was one of the best performances of JC superstar that I have seen. Loved the cast! Liked that they did the show straight through with no intermission.
great show, highly recommended this production is awesome
The play was outstanding. Genesee was a bit unorganized. They didn’t open the doors to the seating until 7:30 with a 8:00 start for the play. We were all crowded in the entryway. Once we got in there wasn’t much time to get a beverage and use the restrooms. The play started 15 minutes late and I assume it was because people weren’t seated.
Great music, great dancing, great venue. Acoustics were fantastic. Second time seeing this show... first time was downtown Chicago... Loved Genesse much more.
OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!10/10
I had seen this musical 40+ years ago at Chicago Amphitheater This production was just as wonderful as the off Broadway show was. The performers were sensational. I wish I could rate 10 stars⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Great talent amazing voices and dancing. So much talent
It was a good modern take on jcss. For being use to the older style of jcss this was a happy surprise.
The production’s audio wasn’t consistent. It was difficult to understand some songs while others were crystal clear. Acting is solid. Set is amazing.
I thought the play was destroyed because they put a spin on it that was all WOKE. Jesus was portrayed as an average man and not as a savior to the world. They did not show in the end his glorious resurrection like the original show and the full song of Jesus Christ Super Star was never sang throughout the show, just short versions. Sad day when the play was overtaken by the WOKE generation!!!!!
Everyone in the show was great. The energy exuded from the whole cast and the dancers especially. What a workout! The sound and lighting were great and pulled it all together.
The music was excellent. The singers' voices were amazing. Judas, Jesus, and Mary Magdalene especially. The acting was well done. The only thing I didn't quite like was some of the dancing that seemed pretty "out there"for me.
