Jesus Christ Superstar on Tour

The musical-theater version of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice's hit 1970 rock opera gets the passionate revival it has long deserved when the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre's production of Jesus Christ Superstar comes to the United States. The show's 50th Anniversary Tour offers an emotionally resonant, hard-rocking experience that debuted in London in 2016. Director Timothy Sheader and choreographer Drew McOnie's cutting-edge production won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards. The 50th Anniversary Tour marks the first major revival of Jesus Christ Superstar in nearly a decade.

Jesus Christ Superstar Background

Jesus Christ Superstar originated as a high-concept rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice in 1970 and sold more than 7 million copies by 1983. Their account of Jesus' last week of life made its Broadway debut as a musical in 1971, dazzling audiences with its stirringly maximal music and minimal dialogue. Two film adaptations followed, in 1973 and 1999, and NBC aired a live concert version, starring John Legend as Jesus, on April 1 (Easter Sunday), 2018.

"This is not your grandmother's Superstar," Catey Sullivan wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times when Timothy Sheader directed the musical in Chicago in 2018. "Drew McOnie's choreography has the explosive feel of barely contained ecstasy, filled with flailing movements that evoke old time tent revivals where snake handlers spoke in tongues and miraculously cured the sick."

The 50th Anniversary Tour production of Jesus Christ Superstar stars actor-singer-songwriter Aaron La Vigne as Jesus, actor-poet James Delisco Beeks as Judas and Jenna Rubaii as Mary Magdalene. You'll shout hallelujah! during the onstage rock band's renditions of "This Jesus Must Die," "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Superstar." And when one of the Pharisees sings, "One thing I'll say for him, Jesus is cool," you will take him at his word.

The story was extra original and exactly as was created decades ago. Music was amazing, singers and artists were excellent and sound quality and volume was amazing.

    Jesus Christ Superstar

by Musical Fan on 11/2/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

One of the most awesome shows I've attended. The cast was stellar, some really remarkable voices. Choreography and staging were quite good. I would highly recommend the show. If it was staying longer, I would have seen it again.

    Glad We Went

by SlamDunk on 11/2/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

We saw JCS in 1973 and this production did not disappoint. I brought my sister back for my second time because she went twice in ‘73, so we have seen the original and this revival. We really liked the director’s and choreographer’s vision for the show. Very fresh. Singing, dancing and the band were great. Excellent experience.

    Not the best

by L. S. on 11/2/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I was not a fan of this hipster version of JC Superstar. It felt like I was watching a “The Voice” version of the play. Aside from Caiaphas and his crew, the other actors didn’t seem to show much emotion. I really hated that Jesus’s song “Gethsemane” had Jesus playing an acoustic guitar. Once again, this song should show so much emotion and that was seriously lacking. The hand held mics and mic stands were distracting to both the actors and the audience. Maybe they were trying to appeal to a younger audience by having it feel more like we were watching “The Voice,” but that isn’t necessary with this show. I would say that this version is a major disappointment.

    Louder Than Ever

by RRJas on 11/2/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Saw Ted Neeley in the title role in 96. Nearly 25 years later, we saw it again. This time with a better grasp and appreciation of the music. The audience at Pantages was one of the better audiences we’ve been with at a musical. Cheering and being raucous at the right times and unbelievably silent at the right times. Always a great experience at Pantages! Great cast in JCS!

    So Hard to Hear

by Monica on 11/1/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

The play looked great, fun, energetic but sadly the sound was so muffled that I couldn't hear or understand anything, big bummer!

by Hammeringham on 11/1/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

My date and I couldn’t believe from the first note to the last note the absolute best musical experience ever. This was 90 mins nonstop excitement and we were together enjoying each song and scene, the best ever that we had seen in our 60+ years listening to music and we enjoyed it together thank you all.

    Couldn’t have been better

by SalGal on 10/30/19San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

All the cast and musicians knocked it out of the park. Ive seen JCSS 3 times and this one really hit me. I knew all the lyrics and had the original album and thought it was true to the excellence of the play. Wish I could see it again.

Felt rushed. No intermission. Held microphones

by s. m. on 10/30/19San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

While the music was amazing and Jeudas in particular had an incredible voice, the show felt rushed. No intermission, but we didn’t know that and everyone was shifting in their seats waiting for an opportunity to stretch and go to the restroom. The actors held microphones which made it seem dated. Some songs just way too loud to be enjoyed.

An OK show but did not have the WOW effect!

by Farrah on 10/30/19San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

There is one memorable piece of music in the show which is played in the beginning and at the end. The story is historical but the music and songs are nothing to write home about when compared to other works of Webber such as Phantom of the Opera. It is OK for one time and I checked it off my list! In comparison I have seen Phantom 3 times and will be seeing Hamilton for the third time. There is no intermission and it is a shorter musical. San Jose Center for Performing Arts is a great Hall. Our seats were in first balcony, row 3 and we had an excellent view.

    SuperGood

by Donnie Roy on 10/29/19San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

The dancing and music were great. Mary and Judas had spectacular voices. Jesus needed a mike with more volume. It was hard to hear him. The musicians were fantastic. My wife and I were not disappointed.

    Excellent Performance

by sandyh1000 on 10/29/19San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

I had been looking forward to this for many months, and was delighted with the performance. It had been many years since I had seen it the first time, but have listened to the musical score many times through the years. This performance was a total delight, the venue was excellent, and I still have the songs running through my head. Thank you to everyone who had a part in bringing it to San Jose, Ca.

    Very heavy...

by Themommer on 10/29/19San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

A child of the 70’s, I had thought that ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ was going to be about the life of Christ, rather than the days that lead up to His death. The entire play was on one very dark and solemn set. The main characters were Judas and Christ. Everything was very well done, and the cast was good...just not what was expected.

    Jesus Christ Superstar 50th anniversary

by Hotforteacher on 10/29/19San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

I enjoyed the show though it was definitely a modern interpretation.. seemed a bit rushed like they were singing faster than normal at times and losing the effect of some of the songs and i didnt get the "man bun" on Aaron LaVigne, every picture of Jesus ever known as always showing long hair and that just kept throwing me off. Jenna Rubah she seems like her voice is able, but I nor the people i came with, were not able to understand a lot of what she was singing because her pronunciation of the words while she was singing was not clear at all
