Jesus Christ Superstar on Tour
The musical-theater version of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice's hit 1970 rock opera gets the passionate revival it has long deserved when the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre's production of Jesus Christ Superstar comes to the United States. The show's 50th Anniversary Tour offers an emotionally resonant, hard-rocking experience that debuted in London in 2016. Director Timothy Sheader and choreographer Drew McOnie's cutting-edge production won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards. The 50th Anniversary Tour marks the first major revival of Jesus Christ Superstar in nearly a decade.
Jesus Christ Superstar Background
Jesus Christ Superstar originated as a high-concept rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice in 1970 and sold more than 7 million copies by 1983. Their account of Jesus' last week of life made its Broadway debut as a musical in 1971, dazzling audiences with its stirringly maximal music and minimal dialogue. Two film adaptations followed, in 1973 and 1999, and NBC aired a live concert version, starring John Legend as Jesus, on April 1 (Easter Sunday), 2018.
"This is not your grandmother's Superstar," Catey Sullivan wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times when Timothy Sheader directed the musical in Chicago in 2018. "Drew McOnie's choreography has the explosive feel of barely contained ecstasy, filled with flailing movements that evoke old time tent revivals where snake handlers spoke in tongues and miraculously cured the sick."
The 50th Anniversary Tour production of Jesus Christ Superstar stars actor-singer-songwriter Aaron La Vigne as Jesus, actor-poet James Delisco Beeks as Judas and Jenna Rubaii as Mary Magdalene. You'll shout hallelujah! during the onstage rock band's renditions of "This Jesus Must Die," "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Superstar." And when one of the Pharisees sings, "One thing I'll say for him, Jesus is cool," you will take him at his word.
Amazing!! Best Judas ever !! Right up there with Carl Anderson and Ben Vereen! Ive seen JCS a number of times and this performance was hands down one of the best.
I've seen this so many times and have never seen a bad production. This was just excellent beyond words.
Fabulous show! Andrew Lloyd-Webber is all you need to know about the music. Incredible singers and dancers! Loved it. Want to see it again!
The show was absolutely fantastic. The singing was superb. I loved the choreography, it was outstanding! A wonderful night of pure entertainment!
I enjoyed the acting and the energy the performers displayed. The dancers and their routines were enjoyable. My problem was with the audio. I found it difficult to understand the lyrics. Much of the performance was muddled or too loud, and it seemed as though the songs were rushed.
I've been to several JCS performances, watched the original movie and bought the John Legend JCS performance. But Friday's JCS performance at Shea's Buffalo blew them all away!!! Every performer was at the top of their game and I am upset with myself that I did not go back again on Sunday. All were awesome! But Jesus, Mary, Caiaphas, Harrod, Pilate and Judas were the best I've ever seen (heard)!!! Thank you for coming to Buffalo & I hope to see them again here soon or maybe another city!
First off I’m a little older and am used to purchasing tickets the old fashion way, so using my phone to purchase and receive my tickets was different. Happy to say I was pleased with the ease of the whole process.
The production was amazing! The actors were incredible! I went two nights in a row by myself and am sooo glad I did! Wonderful production!
Whatever expectations I may have had, this performance absolutely exceeded them! The choreography, the sound quality, and the casting itself was magnificent. I would definitely go again!
It was a very good play. I love how all can be done on one set. Amazing 😊
Totally eclectic vibe. Song lyrics not clear. Did not like that cast was singing into microphone. Too modern for the story. Did not care for it at all. If there was an intermission we would not have returned.
The theatrics and dancing were phenomenal, but we couldn’t understand any of the vocals. When you’re telling a story through song, it’s important to hear and understand the words being sung.
It was an amazing production. The singing was superb. Loved it.
Amazing! Awesome! Powerful! This show is so full of energy and exactly recreates the original music and movie! If you love both or even if you have never heard or seen either, you will absolutely love this show! We sat in Orch C, Row B so obviously the closer you are in the theatre the better the show you will have but any seat for this show will leave you speechless. The music, vocals, actors, dancers, choreography, etc and all facets of this performance in front of and behind the scenes are total PERFECTION in every way!! Thank you to the Tour group, Ticketmaster and the Forum Theatre, all who provided this once in a lifetime and dynamic experience! I actually saw it both nights and would've seen it again, it was that good! There is no intermission which keeps the energy continual and flowing every minute! I give this show the highest rating!
This is a Do Not Miss show. Choreography is brilliant. Way more than I expected!!
I've watched JCSS many times on stage and this was my favorite! The updated choreography in this show was amazing! Having some of the actors/singers on stage with their instruments was such a huge plus. And the voices... OH the voices! Judas did NOT disappoint and those are such tough songs. Jesus, Mary M, Ciaphas, Simon, Pilate, every one blew me away! I'll be singing for weeks now!
One of the best shows I have ever attended. Great choreography, and singing was excellent
Jesus Christ Superstar is superb! This performance was beautifully done.
This was my 4th time seeing Jesus Christ Superstar. Each version is just a little different. The performers were awesome. Judas, Mary Magdeline, blew it out of the water.
I loved it! I’ve seen JCSS 7 or 8 times, with this one being the 3rd time with “new” staging. I have been a fan of this music, and the movie, since I first heard the double album played by my religion teacher (I went to a Catholic HS), who was a nun. Every time I see the musical, I am moved with spirituality. This musical, as now staged….with no set change…..flows seamlessly from song to song.
