Jesus Christ Superstar on Tour

The musical-theater version of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice's hit 1970 rock opera gets the passionate revival it has long deserved when the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre's production of Jesus Christ Superstar comes to the United States. The show's 50th Anniversary Tour offers an emotionally resonant, hard-rocking experience that debuted in London in 2016. Director Timothy Sheader and choreographer Drew McOnie's cutting-edge production won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards. The 50th Anniversary Tour marks the first major revival of Jesus Christ Superstar in nearly a decade.

Jesus Christ Superstar Background

Jesus Christ Superstar originated as a high-concept rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice in 1970 and sold more than 7 million copies by 1983. Their account of Jesus' last week of life made its Broadway debut as a musical in 1971, dazzling audiences with its stirringly maximal music and minimal dialogue. Two film adaptations followed, in 1973 and 1999, and NBC aired a live concert version, starring John Legend as Jesus, on April 1 (Easter Sunday), 2018.

"This is not your grandmother's Superstar," Catey Sullivan wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times when Timothy Sheader directed the musical in Chicago in 2018. "Drew McOnie's choreography has the explosive feel of barely contained ecstasy, filled with flailing movements that evoke old time tent revivals where snake handlers spoke in tongues and miraculously cured the sick."

The 50th Anniversary Tour production of Jesus Christ Superstar stars actor-singer-songwriter Aaron La Vigne as Jesus, actor-poet James Delisco Beeks as Judas and Jenna Rubaii as Mary Magdalene. You'll shout hallelujah! during the onstage rock band's renditions of "This Jesus Must Die," "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Superstar." And when one of the Pharisees sings, "One thing I'll say for him, Jesus is cool," you will take him at his word.

    Stunning performance

by Faithella on 3/26/24Hershey Theatre - Hershey

From the first note to the last this performance was fantastic. The dancers, the voices and the musicians brought their A game! I couldn't stop grinning and the action just kept coming. Breathtaking. The actors moved seamlessly on stage and the choreography was vibrant and emotional. Bravo!

    JC Superstar at 50

by Chic’s McCoy on 3/26/24Hershey Theatre - Hershey

I saw it at what is now the Merriam Theater in Philadelphia when the show first toured 50 years ago, and never again since. Enjoyed the so Rent influenced updated staging. Very impressed with the cast, although Jesus was less than powerful in his delivery. Struck me more as the oppressed trailer trash interpretation of Christ as opposed to the more “muscular” Christ as I recall portrayed in the semi-original I last appreciated. Great night out in a fantastic venue.

    Great Show

by Keith on 3/26/24Hershey Theatre - Hershey

This is the 6th time I have seen Jesus Christ Superstar over the past 45 years. This show was portrayed a little different than the other shows I have seen in the past. With that said, I enjoyed it very much. I liked how it was portrayed. The music is always great. The cast was Amazing!!!

    It was just OK

by Grandma Dee on 3/26/24Hershey Theatre - Hershey

The theater is amazing, the seats were good, the sound...not so much. The accompaniment overwhelmed the vocalists much of the time. Most of the performers were very good, but the actor portraying Christ was miscast. His voice is just not powerful enough. I enjoyed the show but was underwhelmed. Also, I know all the words of all the songs, and I noticed some revisions to the original libretto. Finally, this production seemed to be more negative about Christ than others I have seen.

    Disappointed

by Fan of musicals on 3/26/24Hershey Theatre - Hershey

The performers were great, but some musicals are not meant to be modernized. This is one of those musicals. So much was lost with the modernization of JCSS that could have been preserved if it was just kept in its classic form. My daughter who is 13 and has never seen the original, had no idea what was going on and had trouble following. The omission of Jesus’ traditional garb made it difficult to differentiate him from the other male performers. Due to the lack of scene changes, my daughter was confused and thought the entire play was happening in the same location. I was so excited for her and I to see the musical but left very disappointed. If I were there alone, I would’ve walked out after the first song. We went home and watched the original 1974 (or whatever year) version on tv. King Herrod was unnecessarily in drag….not interested in ever seeing this version again.

    Hard to hear performers

by Joe on 3/26/24Hershey Theatre - Hershey

The performers were very good, but you had a hard time hearing them when they would speak. They need to upgrade their audio systems by wearing headset microphones and not using hand held microphones. My opinion is kind of jaded due to the fact that I saw the original broadway production back in the 70s.

    Modern rendition of a Classic

by Penny on 3/26/24Hershey Theatre - Hershey

The singers were exceptional at both music and acting . The staging was exceptional. Unfortunately the choreography was a disaster and the dancers clueless and talentless.

Needs subtitles, a user guide and less screaming

by TheMartialOne on 3/26/24Hershey Theatre - Hershey

The stage set was amazing. The energy put forth by the entire cast was intense. The musicians were excellent. The biggest problems? --Rarely being able to clearly hear any of the words besides the occasional "Jesus", "Superstar", or "love him". This seemed a combination of venue acoustics, sound mixing (overbearing instrumentation), and plain enunciation by the vocalists. --Judas and Jesus spent half the show screaming (I think "get out"was the most frequent but it was hard to know for sure). I suppose it's written that way, but it didn't add anything to the show for me. --Not the production troupe's fault, but the show would benefit from non-singing interludes between songs to help set the stage. I was raised Catholic, know the story, and STILL had a rough time figuring out who was who, and where in the timeline they were. --Based on the credits/who's who, I'm pretty sure it was the "Mob Leader"that spent half the show crawling around the stage like Gollum? But I have no idea what the implication was supposed to be, and doing the same movements (spazzing claw hands swimming in midair) the entire show was, for me and my wife, more of a distraction than anything impactful. Evil spirit? Wrangling the mob mentality? Who knows. I'd never see it again, nor advise any friends to go see it. 1 star for the troupe's energy, 1 star for the clean and beautiful venue.

    Great Show!

    by Jess on 3/24/24

I loved the cast, dancing and heart put into such a wonderful musical. The microphones need to go!! A little distracting and I think was part of why words seemed muffled at times. Overall, well done!! Mary M and Judas were superb!!

    Amazing!

by TSmithers on 3/21/24Mark C. Smith Concert Hall at the Von Braun Center - Huntsville

Thanks to my father, I grew up listening to the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack. I had an opportunity to see the show 20+ years ago but could not make it. I was so excited when I saw that the show was coming to Huntsville!! From the first guitar riff, I was hooked. It was like like listening to the original soundtrack. This show was amazing, the voices, the action. I loved every bit of it. I will see it again if I have the opportunity.

    Great! (again)

by susan on 3/21/24Mark C. Smith Concert Hall at the Von Braun Center - Huntsville

Enjoyed the show very much. The music is fabulous. The ensemble was incredible! The only disappointment was that the musicians were not all visible. Had seen essentially this version of the show a few years ago in Nashville where the musicians could all be seen, and it really added a lot to the overall enjoyment.

Good story but sometimes difficult to follow.

by Lucy on 3/20/24Mark C. Smith Concert Hall at the Von Braun Center - Huntsville

The production is very good and the music brilliant. However, the lyrics are difficult to follow unless you are familiar with them. I suggest that you read through the lyrics before you see this show, after all, there are no spoilers to be found in this story. It was really interesting and different from previous productions I’ve seen. Clarity of lyrics has always been the main issue of this musical. With a little effort beforehand, that can be avoided and make the entire experience more enjoyable. The crucifixion scene is emotional, satisfying be prepared.

Resurrection should be the grand finale

by RG on 3/20/24Mark C. Smith Concert Hall at the Von Braun Center - Huntsville

I enjoyed the musical - music and dancing was great. However, the highlight should have been the resurrection and not the crucifixion. It is wonderful that our Lord and Savior gave his life for us on the cross but the best part is that he arose again and wants us to join him in heaven one day!!

    It was awesome!

by Richard on 3/19/24Mark C. Smith Concert Hall at the Von Braun Center - Huntsville

I took a group of friends recently to see Jesus Christ Superstar and it was incredible. We all had a marvelous time, and it was thoroughly engaging. I had a challenge getting everyone to commit to going so I purchased my tickets a little later than I liked but we still got good seats. The musical was sort of a 50-year celebration since my wife and I originally saw it in 1972 while dating. It made us feel like kids again. The musical cast was outstanding, and we all had our favorites - Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdelene, and Caiphas/priests. The creativity and staging was unbelievable, and if I could, I would have gone back that night or the next day. I highly recommend it.
