About

Played by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

With performances from AR Rahman and other musicians from India

A world without AR Rahman would be a world without Bollywood.

Described by Time as ‘the world's most prolific and popular composer', the Indian singer, songwriter, composer and philanthropist has influenced every corner of his home country's cinema culture. In this Asia TOPA exclusive, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will perform the Music of AR Rahman, with the superstar himself taking to the stage as special guest.

Fusing the delicate intricacy of eastern classical composition with the innovations of electronic music and the majesty of traditional orchestral arrangements, AR Rahman's music has earned him two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe.

Featuring signature works such as Jai Ho and Slumdog Millionaire Suite, this one-of-a-kind concert will see the MSO joined by international guest soloists S. Navin on flute and Asad Khan on sitar as well as vocal soloists and an epic 30 voice choir.

    Phenomenal Concert

by koko on 8/23/22Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

Thoroughly enjoyed the concert. I am glad I bought the ticket; however, I regret that I didn't buy them earlier when I first found out. It was way cheaper with even better seats but I still I feel worth spending on his concert.

    Disappointed

    by ConcertLover on 8/22/22

More Tamil songs than Hindi and Rahman himself sang only few of those. Wish it was advertised as such. We would have skipped. Not worth paying all the money (it was pricey).

    underwhelming

by SAM on 8/22/22Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

It was heavily biased towards the non-Hindi fans. we had come with friends to hear so many of his great Hindi songs and except for a couple, we didnt get enough of him. He should have advertised that this was a predominantly non-Hindi concert. Moreover, the visuals were distracting. we went to hear him. Not watch gimmicks from a teenaged computer geek. If it had actualy performance by the singers on stage, thats different. But just making computer generated images actually was quite distracting. Should have shown the performers play their instruments, drums, guitars, keyboard etc and then close up of singers.

    Fun but loud

by One ARR Fan on 8/22/22Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

It was a lot of fun and excitement. The ambience and the time we spent with our friends there was amazing, however, it was hard to hear the songs well due to the loudness of the music.

    A memorable one

by Praveen on 8/22/22Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

AR Rehman is one of India's greatest music composer and it was a bucket list item to check off. It lived up to everything you could expect. The cherry on the cake was Fox Theatre. What a venue! Would come back to another event just to look at the architecture

    Absolutely brilliant

    by P. H. on 8/22/22Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

Wow...that was some show from ARR and his fantastic band of musicians and vocalists...played many of his hits in Tamil and some Hindi songs. Great venue with good acoustics added with superb mixing...made it a memorable evening. Will surely see him again whenever he tours. God bless.

    It was a good performance

by Rana on 8/22/22Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

A R Rahman is beyond any trivial review like this, but his recent performance at the Fox Theatre, Detroit, might draw some discussions from the audience. First of all, he excluded many of his popular scores from this show. One cause can be that he is on a month-long USA tour and avoids performing the same numbers repeatedly in different venues. Given the show's status, Sound mixing wasn't impeccable; there were instances where vocals were buried entirely under instruments. The lighting and graphics were fantastic, and the show's pace was good. Given the ticket price, Rahman could have extended the show by another thirty minutes.

    Display

by Any on 8/21/22Prudential Center - Newark

    1) Big display screens showing the stage performance was missing, making it difficult for distant viewers. 2) VFX effect on the only screen behind Rehman Sir had irrelevant and horrible display. 3) Performers other than Rehman sir couldn’t be seen! 4) overall song selection was good, however, songs from cult classics like sathiya,RDB, JodhaAkbar, Lagaan etc could have been better!

    Not a good interactive show

by NP on 8/19/22Ovens Auditorium - Charlotte

Though A. R Rahman Is big name we bought ticket but it was not a good performance where zero interaction with audience. No greetings or appreciation from organizer. Except one all performers had very poor body language like they are performing forcefully. No food option for kind of population(south Asian) attending show. It was very loud and was not able to hear what they are singing properly. Organizer should have communicated which language songs will be performed mostly. Disappointed.

    Dream come true

by YogiBear on 8/18/22DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Always wanted to see AR Rahman live and this was a dream come true. He and his very talented team gave amazing performances one after the other for almost 3 hours non stop. It was hard to contain this talent at a small venue like DPAC but I'm so glad they decided to perform here. DPAC as a venue is always well managed and although this show was sold out, the crowd management was executed well. Overall a great show!

Great performance but it could be vastly improved

    by A. T. on 8/17/22Prudential Center - Newark

Just to get this out of the way, I’m a huge fan of AR Rahman’s music. This was my first A.R. Rahman Concert and I was super excited. My family and I were sitting in section 106 at the Prudential Center. We were sitting pretty high up. I was really counting on the IMAG (image magnification) system to clearly see the performers on stage. But it wasn’t used that effectively. Instead, for the majority of the songs, they just had generic animated graphics showing up on the huge LED wall behind the performers. I’d much rather see the performers on stage. When they did show the performers on the IMAG, it was usually combined with other effects or were in a small frame or only one person was shown at a time. It felt like there was a disconnect between the IMAG video team and rest of the technical teams. I also noticed that the correct performer was not in camera during their parts. In the beginning of the performance, there was no announcement or introductions for any of the performers. Instead, all they had was the spot lights moving to illuminating the parts of the stage where each performer stood. Now if they were on the IMAG, I could have at least seen their faces. I found out that one of the performers were Jonita Gandhi only in the middle of the show, because I couldn’t see the performers on the stage. They should have done introductions of each performer to hype everyone for a great night! I really felt like this show was just a “1” of the 22 shows the team was going to be performing. As far as Sound goes, I think it was pretty good for the most part. For some of the earlier songs, I felt the drums and other instruments over powered the vocals thus making it hard to hear the vocals clearly. But for that specific venue, its probably the best you are going to get. As far as graphics goes, in addition to what I mentioned about the IMAG, I felt like the animated graphics were a bit distracting and disconnected from the songs that were played. I didn’t see an overall theme. To be consistent, at least have the names of the songs being played and better yet show the stills from the movie that it came from to create that “nostalgia”/ “feeling”. Here is my feedback: - Utilize the IMAG properly so that everyone on stage can be seen by the people who sit in the back - Have proper introductions of the performers and create a sense of hype. - Make sure vocals are in the top of the mix for the earlier songs. - Have a consistent graphics amongst all of the sets so that it doesn’t feel disconnected. Don’t have graphics that are distracting from the acts of the songs. Overall, I felt like this was an over ambitious rushed production. 22 cities in a month is a lot of traveling and tiresome. I still Love ARR's Music.

    Sad

by Wm on 8/17/22DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Was a sad and pricey experience. Not a lot of hits were sung and, if so, for 30 seconds or so. The music was purposely louder than the vocal singers. A.R. Was removed from the crowd. If he needed voice rest, I wish the space between concerts were appropriately planned. Didn’t enjoy the concert but I wish the artists well
