Great performance. Wonderful that Ravi could attend. Unfortunate and very distracting that late arrivals interrupted both sets.

About
A singular figure in the Indian classical and progressive world music scenes, Anoushka Shankar grew up playing alongside her father and Guru, the legendary Ravi Shankar. In recent years she has emerged as a global music star, performing to worldwide adulation for her breathtaking sitar virtuosity and releasing numerous critically acclaimed albums.
Anoushka Shankar's music takes the ancient Indian instrument firmly into the contemporary world – into electronica, classical music and flamenco, collaborating alongside the world’s great orchestras with artists as diverse as Sting, M.I.A and Herbie Hancock.
Co-written by the extraordinary percussionist and hang player Manu Delago, her album Land of Gold, is a response to the humanitarian plight of refugees and a searing cry against injustice.
Be astounded by an evening of deeply expressive music, which draws upon India’s ancient culture, while creating a dynamically intoxicating sense of the contemporary.
“She’s one of the most gifted artists in her generation.”
Los Angeles Times
“A natural talent blessed with fluid technique and keen musical instincts, she possesses a darker, purer sound than her father (Ravi Shankar) but is clearly guided by his tutelage.”
The Birmingham News
“Most people are musicians simply because they play a certain instrument; when they plat that instrument the music appears. But Ravi to me, he is the music; it just happens to be that he plays the Sitar. And it’s like that with Anoushka. She has that quality – she is the music. “

Rating: 4 out of 5 Great Show and What Talent
by ABCEngineer on 4/22/12Balboa Theatre - San DiegoShe is fantastic and talented! Amazing musicians that she has put together as well. Everyone was top of their class. A must see show. Also, what an honor to see the Raviv Shankar daughter play for her father here in San Diego! Only thing that would make the show better would be to have some equally talented dancers be part of the display that would enhance but not distract from the amazing abilities of her and her talented group of musicians.

She was able to connect two completely different cultures into one through the music and made us fall in love with her talent and her instrument- sitar. As a sandiegan, I hope to see her performance in San Diego every year. It will help us to follow her bright future.thanks
Rating: 5 out of 5 Anushka Shankar's performance was stunning
by AbhishekSDalvi on 4/16/12Lisner Auditorium - WashingtonThere are few artists who can successfully carry fusion shows. This one, Sitar with Flamenco was one such, purely due to the mastery of Anushka Shankar over the Sitar. The percussionists did a fab job of supporting the pace. Often there were moments where we could not decide who was faster and more skillful. The energy in Anushka's shows is truly unique. This is one of those concerts after which you wonder, Why am I not playing any instrument with so much dedication and passion.

Rating: 3 out of 5 Don't get front row seats @ Rochester Civic Center
by IndianClassicalMusicFans on 3/28/12Mayo Civic Center Presentation Hall - RochesterWe had mixed feelings about this concert. The fusion of sitar with flamenco was unique, as were the accompanying artists (mridangam, bean, drummer, guitar, vocal flamenco), but there were many spots in which the music did not flow. However, we were disappointed in our front row (1) seats! The stage was so high and the instrumentalists were so far back on the stage that we couldn't even see them. A few people tried to sit on their coats with little success. From the musical standpoint, Anoushka Shankar is an alright player. However, the pieces were very practiced with minimal improvisation (and improvisation is the mark of an accomplished Indian classical music player). Although she can play very rapidly, she plays very mechanically rather than emotively and unfortunately does not make much eye contact with the audience, and her affect is stiff. I felt as though I was witnessing a "private show" but not drawn in by the artist.
