About

A singular figure in the Indian classical and progressive world music scenes, Anoushka Shankar grew up playing alongside her father and Guru, the legendary Ravi Shankar. In recent years she has emerged as a global music star, performing to worldwide adulation for her breathtaking sitar virtuosity and releasing numerous critically acclaimed albums.

Anoushka Shankar's music takes the ancient Indian instrument firmly into the contemporary world – into electronica, classical music and flamenco, collaborating alongside the world’s great orchestras with artists as diverse as Sting, M.I.A and Herbie Hancock.

Co-written by the extraordinary percussionist and hang player Manu Delago, her album Land of Gold, is a response to the humanitarian plight of refugees and a searing cry against injustice.

Be astounded by an evening of deeply expressive music, which draws upon India’s ancient culture, while creating a dynamically intoxicating sense of the contemporary.

“She’s one of the most gifted artists in her generation.”

Los Angeles Times

“A natural talent blessed with fluid technique and keen musical instincts, she possesses a darker, purer sound than her father (Ravi Shankar) but is clearly guided by his tutelage.”

The Birmingham News

“Most people are musicians simply because they play a certain instrument; when they plat that instrument the music appears. But Ravi to me, he is the music; it just happens to be that he plays the Sitar. And it’s like that with Anoushka. She has that quality – she is the music. “

Anoushka never fails to blow my mind

Absolutely unbelievable set & setting. It didn't hurt that Anoushka's parents were in attendance. The players brought their "A" game for this gig. I swear, everyone walked out of the Carriage House a good two feet off the ground. If you needed to re-charge your batteries the Villa can do it that on it's own. Couple that with the mesmerizing talent of Anoushka Shankar and you're officially being powered by the "Force". A full day later & I'm still trying to process it - "Did that just really happen??? " Wow...

    Intimate and powerful

by Stubrew on 4/30/10Montalvo - Saratoga

I was sitting in the second row, I looked to my right and here comes Ravi Shankar...the crowd erupts with applause as others recognize him. He sits in the front row just left of center. A hush comes over the crowd... The curtain opens and we begin. The venue is so intimate, it was a joy to watch the facial expressions and non verbal communications between the musicians. The quality of the sound was superb! She played several of her father's compositions with some of her own arrangements. "Variant Moods" was fabulous with the flute simulating the violin. They also played Anoushka's compositions which are wonderful and energetic. They ended the show with a solos.
