About

A singular figure in the Indian classical and progressive world music scenes, Anoushka Shankar grew up playing alongside her father and Guru, the legendary Ravi Shankar. In recent years she has emerged as a global music star, performing to worldwide adulation for her breathtaking sitar virtuosity and releasing numerous critically acclaimed albums.

Anoushka Shankar's music takes the ancient Indian instrument firmly into the contemporary world – into electronica, classical music and flamenco, collaborating alongside the world’s great orchestras with artists as diverse as Sting, M.I.A and Herbie Hancock.

Co-written by the extraordinary percussionist and hang player Manu Delago, her album Land of Gold, is a response to the humanitarian plight of refugees and a searing cry against injustice.

Be astounded by an evening of deeply expressive music, which draws upon India’s ancient culture, while creating a dynamically intoxicating sense of the contemporary.

“She’s one of the most gifted artists in her generation.”

Los Angeles Times

“A natural talent blessed with fluid technique and keen musical instincts, she possesses a darker, purer sound than her father (Ravi Shankar) but is clearly guided by his tutelage.”

The Birmingham News

“Most people are musicians simply because they play a certain instrument; when they plat that instrument the music appears. But Ravi to me, he is the music; it just happens to be that he plays the Sitar. And it’s like that with Anoushka. She has that quality – she is the music. “

    Incredible performance

by BigD1 on 4/25/16Balboa Theatre - San Diego

Anoushka and her band were in top form once again. This is the second time I've seen her and she seems to stick pretty closely to the material from her most recent recording. This time around, the songs (from her very recent release) were mostly dark, moody, and kind of heavy sounding. Being mainly a fan of rock music, this was a welcome direction to hear her go in and I thoroughly enjoyed her sitar playing, arrangements and most definitely the accompaniment of her amazingly talented band with their unique instrumentation. Her music transcends all genres and is eternally moving. It was a privilege to see her again and I hope I'll get many more chances in the future.

Anoushka's current ensemble plays wonderful show!

by ralphshaha on 4/22/16Balboa Theatre - San Diego

Last Sunday Anoushka Shankar returned to her home town San Diego for a dazzling performance. She was joined by a Keyboard/upright Bass player,Indian horn player who also played various bells & a fabulous drummer/percussionist from Austria! Most of the selections performed were from her latest LP "Land of Gold" which were very emotional songs depicting the struggle of immigrants suffering in Europe currently. Incredible dynamics along with excellent musicianship created a atmosphere for truly a memorable evening. The lightning was very well done which created a meditational & stimulating ambience.

    Inspiring performance by Anoushka Shankar

by Poochenzo on 4/20/16Balboa Theatre - San Diego

I first saw Anoushka play with her father 15 years ago. And now I loved how she has blended North Indian Classical Music with other instruments to create a sound all her own.

    Anoshka rocks the sitar

by PowerofMusic on 4/20/16Balboa Theatre - San Diego

Expansive yet intimate are the two words that begin to sum up the mind blowing and heart opening power of Anoshka's latest work. The ancient complex voice of her instrument that meets new percussion by Manu Delago and just enough stand up base, keyboard with piano and electronic elements topped off with the Indian reed shehnai instrument -- all speak to the soul as Anoshka intended. Land of Gold invites citizens to look closely at the huge migration events happening currently to families seeking a safe future and home. She says her instrument is the terrain exploring the gamut of emotional expression with shades of aggression, anger and tenderness -- and that's what listeners get intensely and with gratitude. Anoshka set out to open our hearts to the plight of other families far from here brought right before our ears and eyes with this timeless and beautiful music.

    Insane jam session

by BunsenHoneydew on 4/20/16Balboa Theatre - San Diego

Had no idea what to expect. Got a high energy instrumental jam session with fantastic guitar-god (goddess in this case) type sitar playing and amazing accompaniments from the drummer and the most soulful wind flute I've ever heard. For 20 bucks it was the best concert I've been to in years. Terrific music.

    Awesome

by Boditty on 4/16/16Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

I have to admit I was not familiar with her music when I got the tickets- I figured if she was offspring of Ravi Shankar that she would be great! For some reason I thought she sang- perhaps confused her for Norah Jones! She plays the sitar- amazingly. Her band rocked. The flute was amazing- sounded like vocals. The percussion was deep and bass. Really great stuff.

Rich exotic sounds took my breath away

by Saraa on 4/23/12Luckman Fine Arts Complex - Los Angeles

This show was simply superb, so beautiful and organized with short intros to each song. The members were so full of life and energy and passion for their music. The venue was really nice with good sound and not too big so as there wasn't a bad seat in the house. I especially loved the folk instruments from India like the clay pot, shenai and twingy sound thing that you never get to see performed live. The Flamenco musicians were great and I loved the booming box. The woman's voice was so melodic. The improvisations by each of the musicians were outstanding too! Anushka never seemed to tire and played with such ease and grace and her hand moving so fast up and down the sitar, she gave us an encore as well with a heartfelt, romantic & slow raga. I liked that poem about the moon and the bit about Persian origins and the history of the music.
