this show is over hyped, under delivers and not worth the time or the money we left at the intermission as it was putting us to sleep

    An American amazement

by DPMddn on 11/2/16Boch Center Wang Theatre (formerly Citi Performing Arts Center) - Boston

Truly entertaining. I enjoyed the blend of dance and song with the comedic touches. The brilliant scenery backdrops which transformed effortlessly without black outs or curtain closures.

I can't say enough about how beautiful this show is! The acting, singing, dancing, sets, lighting, and of course the Gershwin score are all superb. The beauty of it moved me to tears more than once. Bravo!

    Absolutely amazing

An American in Paris is brilliant from beginning to end. I am always awestruck at how many talented artists there are in the world. Everyone in the cast was excellent. The only sad thing is that the run is only two weeks; not enough time for some of my friends to attend.

Ok, but not worth the $. Watch the movie!

by Hhfhehdfh on 11/2/16Boch Center Wang Theatre (formerly Citi Performing Arts Center) - Boston

I really didn't like this play. I really wanted to, but just didn't. There were too many weird references to WWII when the movie had none (yes, I'm in my 20s and saw the movie). The ballet scene at the end was way too long. The French accents were terrible. All in all, disappointing.

Just Beautiful - Do NOT Miss!

by Fran60 on 11/1/16Boch Center Wang Theatre (formerly Citi Performing Arts Center) - Boston

From the moment the curtains parted until the last bow was taken, I was mesmerized by the perfect storm of music, dance, staging and characters in a simple, engaging tale of love and history. The actors/dancers were perfect for their parts. A little waif of a girl who looked amazingly like a young Lesle Carron complimented the tall athletic, unmistakably American Gene Kelly look-alike. The music was beautifully done and choreographed to perfection. The sets and costumes could not have been better. I sat in my seat, relaxed and allowed the production unfold itself. Each moment moved the story along and each musical number was better than the last. I would see it again in a heartbeat.

Entertaining show, not quite up to superlatives

by jpstewar on 11/1/16Boch Center Wang Theatre (formerly Citi Performing Arts Center) - Boston

I should start by saying that I am a big musical lover. My wife is too although it's usually me that pursues these things. I've always loved the Gene Kelly movie. The reviews for NY were ecstatic so we figured we'd go. How was it? For us, very good but not great. I know, total heresy given the reviews. But while we enjoyed it, it seemed kind of old-fashioned and too much of its era. Dancing, singing, all great. But it never really had that over-the-top exuberance I like to see in a musical. Or I shouldn't say never, bur rarely. I had read the reviews in the Times but I actually went the night before the Boston Globe published theirs. The reviewer said something like "you won't mind the paper-thin plot." Actually we both did. The plot is, and has been, an excuse to string together a bunch of Gershwin songs. Which BTW, are great So, for us a good night out and overall I'd recommend it. But this show is from another era and so expect some - but not a lot - of razzle-dazzle. I didn't get the feeling that others in the audience were excited either. And BTW, I hope you like ballet. Because there's a long one near the end. If you like romantic elegance and old-fashioned boy meets girl, this is for you. But I'll take Kinky Boots or the Producers any day.

A very professional production. The music, dancing, song, were all far above the typical touring show! This is a great redo of a great classic.

Want to see ballet & jazz dance? You'll like this

by Dharmatime on 11/1/16Boch Center Wang Theatre (formerly Citi Performing Arts Center) - Boston

Unfortunately, that is not what I had in mind when I bought the tickets. I really wanted to give this 3 stars, because of the disappointment. But the actors and staging were so top-notch - just perfect - that I had to add a star just for the talent. It has become a standard thing, though: artistic directors more interested in making their mark than on entertaining an audience. What would be wrong with putting on a straight-forward musical? No interpretations or tricks - just sing the dang Gershwin song -- put some energy into the basic dances of the era. The only piece of the play that really grabbed for a feeling of transcendent elation was the Radio City Music Hall part. Compared to that, the rest of the show was low energy on the pure entertainment scale. Bottom line: it's all about expectations. I wish the ads for these shows would be more upfront about the artistic license that distorts the original, conventional versions. (Looking at you, Boston Nutcracker)

    Great Show

So much going on in this show. There's always something to hold you attention, be it the acting, the dancing, or just the movement on stage. The backgrounds and use of projections and panel moves made for a unique set design. The acting and singing was wonderful. The main characters really drew you in. There's something for everyone with this show.

    Uplifting & Happy Show

by buzzknit on 11/1/16Boch Center Wang Theatre (formerly Citi Performing Arts Center) - Boston

The show was so much fun, the singing and dancing was so good. I wasn't sure what to expect and it was a wonderful Broadway show. The set decorations were very creative and well done.

An American in Paris is spectacular. The sets are amazing and altogether wonderful. The cast is terrific from top to bottom. The music--Gershwin!--could not be more fun. And the dancing! Wow--the dancing is what makes the show. Do not miss this excellent performance.
