As a Swedish death metal band that mainly pens and performs songs about Viking history and lore, it makes absolute sense that their name is in the fictional language of Sindarin (created by J. R. R. Tolkien) and translates into “Mount Doom”—the volcano in Tolkien’s fantasy world of Middle Earth. It’s also fitting that Johan Hegg (vocals), Olavi Mikkonen (guitar), Johan Söderberg (guitar), Ted Lundström (bass) and Fredrik Andersson play über-loud hit songs like “Death In Fire,” “Thousand Years of Oppression,” “Without Fear,” “A Fury Divine” and “Risen From the Sea” with as much speed and vigor as wielded by the almighty hammer of Thor. Legions of death metal fans have been grabbing concert tickets since the early ‘90s to witness the fire and fury of Amon Amarth LIVE on stage, performing music that the band’s website describes as “a compelling fusion of buzzsaw riff work, melodic harmonies and soul-crushing rhythms.” Amon Amarth frequently play at metal festivals around the globe and tour with other top-notch death metal acts like Goatwhore, Enslaved and Skeletonwitch.
Over the course of their career, Amon Amarth have played at venues like Arizona Federal Theatre, and have brought The Fillmore (Philadelphia), The Fillmore (Detroit), The Fillmore (Minneapolis) to capacity.
Loved this show! Such a good one! Will definitely be returning for more shows!!!!!
Amon Amarth and the rest of the lineup (Cannibal Corpse and Obituary) were amazing. AA’s stage show was great! I haven’t seen a dragon on stage since Fio did it on the 80’s. Johan is a great frontman and the band was tight. Can’t wait to see them again!
Venue sucked for a metal show, no pit, chairs zip-tied together, sound was muffled for first 3 bands. Paid extra $100 for “vip experience” that only got u in 15 minutes before everyone else and directed straight to merch line. Total rip-off. Don’t go to Rose Music Center for a metal show, you’ll be disappointed.
Great venue. Good parking, good seating, and all the bands kicked ass !!!
Lineup was fantastic, set design was amazing, sound and set list were great!
Amon Amarth crushed it. By far the best metal show I've been to. Perfect sound. Awesome stage presence and set design. So good.
I am somewhat into Viking metal and did not know Amon Amarth's songs, however, they put on a fantastic show and I loved the experience! The venue is always great. On the NO side...Cannibal Corpse was unbearable. Many seemed to like them. I know now that "death metal"is not for me. I like music, the musicianship in Amon Amarth was very good. I didn't catch enough of Obituary to comment, other than to say that what I heard was much better than CC.
I was beyond impressed, not only was the sound fantastic for all the bands but I had no idea how good Amon Amarth is with the crowd.
Nice venue. Secure parking available a block away. Fun concert overall.
My expectations are always very high when attending an Amon Amarth gig, and so far they have never failed to exceed my very high expectations. The "Metal Crushes All"gig at GLC Live at 20 Monroe in Grand Rapids was no exception. Excellent support from Frozen Soul, Obituary and Cannibal Corpse was followed by yet another blistering performance from Hegg, Lundström, Söderberg, Mikkonen and Wallgren: a fantastic set list was delivered with just the right amount of pageantry, artistry and flair. They had me at the opener The Pursuit of Vikings, and didn't release their hold until Johan Hegg had finally defeated Jormungandr at the very end of their set.... once again, an epic performance by my favorite band! Catch them during The Metal Crushes All tour of North America - you will not regret it! \m/
